Talking to Teens about Pain: A Modified Delphi Study of Adolescent Pain Science Education.

ABSTRACT: Background: Persistent pain is a prevalent condition that negatively influences physical, emotional, social and family functioning in adolescents. Pain science education is a promising therapy for adults, yet to be thoroughly investigated for persistent pain in adolescents. There is a need to develop suitable curricula for adolescent pain science education. Methods: An interdisciplinary meeting of 12 clinicians and researchers was held during March 2018 in Adelaide, South Australia. An a priori objective of the meeting was to identify and gain consensus on key learning objectives for adolescent pain science education using a modified-Delphi process. Results and Conclusion: Consensus was reached via a modified Delphi process for seven learning objectives to form the foundation of a curriculum: 1) Pain is a protector; 2) The pain system can become overprotective; 3) Pain is a brain output; 4) Pain is not an accurate marker of tissue state; 5) There are many potential contributors to anyone's pain; 6) We are all bioplastic and; 7) Pain education is treatment. Recommendations are made for promising areas for future research in adolescent pain science education.

Project description:BackgroundDonabedian conceptual and multidimensional framework has been used in several studies in an educational context. In this study, we aimed to adapt the Donabedian three-component model (structure, process, and outcome) in undergraduate nursing education. This conceptual framework provides a comprehensive image of nursing education institutions and can help to evaluate institutions by measuring different aspects of their performance. A comprehensive understanding of the various elements of an educational institution helps to develop a complete, appropriate relevant set of performance indicators.MethodsThis was a modified Delphi study. It had three rounds. The expert panel consisted of nursing faculty members and nursing Ph.D. students. In the first round, a questionnaire was designed based on interviews, focus groups, and a literature review. Experts rated their agreement with each element on a 5-point Likert scale in rounds two and three. The consensus level was set as 75%. The stability between rounds was also determined by calculating kappa coefficients. One Sample T-Test was also calculated for new items in round three.ResultsAll 55 items of the questionnaire were confirmed in the second round based on the consensus percentage of 75. Five new items were added to the third round based on comments in round two. Eventually, all elements except one were confirmed according to the consensus level, kappa values, means, and One-Sample T-Test in round three. The structure's key elements include staff (academic and non-academic); equipment; guidelines; resources and facilities; and students' demographics and characteristics. Process key elements include communication; education; evaluation; cooperation; and consultation. Outcome key elements include knowledge development; nursing image; alumni's outcome; students' outcome; related medical centers' performance; accreditation and evaluation results; and satisfaction.ConclusionsDifferent elements of a nursing education institution at the bachelor's level were determined. The results of this study can help related bodies to develop and implement a comprehensive and systematic evaluation. These results can also be a basis for making this model useful in other nursing courses or education in other fields.

Project description:Studies have shown that there is a deficiency in focused oncology teaching during medical school in Canada. This study aimed to develop oncology education goals and objectives for medical students through consensus of oncology educators from across Canada.In 2014 we created a comprehensive list of oncology education objectives using existing resources. Experts in oncology education and undergraduate medical education from all 17 Canadian medical schools were invited to participate in a 3-round modified Delphi process. In round 1, the participants scored the objectives on a 9-point Likert scale according to the degree to which they agreed an objective should be taught to medical students. Objectives with a mean score of 7.0 or greater were retained, those with a mean score of 1.0-3.9 were excluded, and those with a mean score of 4.0-6.9 were discussed at a round 2 Web meeting. In round 3, the participants voted on inclusion and exclusion of the round 2 objectives.Thirty-four (92%) of the 37 invited oncology educators, representing 14 medical schools, participated in the study. They included oncologists, family physicians, members of undergraduate medical education curriculum committees and a psychologist. Of the 214 objectives reviewed in round 1, 146 received a mean score of 7.0 or greater, and 68 were scored 4.0-6.9; no objective received a mean score below 4.0. Nine new objectives were suggested. The main themes of participants' comments were to minimize the number of objectives and to aim objectives at the knowledge level required for family physicians. In round 2, the participants were able to combine 28 of the objectives with other existing objectives. In round 3, 7 of the 49 objectives received consensus of at least 75% for inclusion. The final Canadian Oncology Goals and Objectives for Medical Students contained 10 goals and 153 objectives.Through a systematic process, we created a comprehensive, consensus-based set of oncology goals and objectives to facilitate the design of undergraduate medical education curricula and improve oncology education for medical students.
