Production Processes for Creating Educational Videos.

ABSTRACT: Asynchronous video-based educational resources allow for increased course material engagement. In today's climate, educators are encouraged to create videos for online instruction but are typically given limited production guidance. Few formal resources exist to guide educators for high-quality video production in a non-studio setting. This article is a how-to guide for producing videos using widely available primary resources through three steps: preproduction, production, and postproduction. During preproduction, educators consider style and project scope, including the "what, how, and why" of the content. For production, we have provided information on the set, light, sounds, and video equipment needed for optimizing video production in a non-studio setting. Finally, during postproduction, the educator considers how to combine and edit the video as well as organize content. Overall, this article is an approachable guide to help educators begin their low-budget video-production journeys.

Making Effective Educational Videos for Clinical Teaching.

Project description:Prerecorded video content in medical education has become more common. Increasingly accessible technology coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent need for distanced learning has greatly increased the interest in and need for high-quality video content. The use of short educational videos to augment other teaching methods has been shown to improve learners' experiences, knowledge retention, and understanding of content. Multiple studies have demonstrated that video education can be a highly effective tool for learning, particularly for hard-to-visualize processes and for procedural education. Videos allow learners to view content at their own pace and revisit materials on demand. In addition, well-designed videos can be repurposed by educators, ultimately reducing time needed to create high-quality educational content. Currently available technology allows educators to create high-quality videos at minimal cost and with a modest investment of time. This article details practical tips for creating high-yield educational videos.

Pedagogic prestidigitation: using magic tricks to enhance educational videos.

Project description:Previous research suggests that magic tricks can be employed within an educational context to enhance attention, engagement, critical thinking and recall. This study builds on this work by examining the impact of incorporating magic tricks into an online educational video. Adult participants (N = 198) completed a need for cognition scale and then watched a video containing either several bespoke card tricks that had been specially devised to help tell the story of the Apollo Moon landings (Magic Video), or an almost identical video that did not contain any magic tricks (Control Video). All participants rated their levels of engagement, absorption and recall. Compared to the Control Video, the Magic Video was rated as significantly more interesting, informative and absorbing. There was no difference between the groups for recall. There was a positive correlation between participants' need for cognition scores, and the degree to which they found the Magic Video interesting, and were willing to share it with others. The theoretical, methodological and practical implications of these results are discussed, along with recommendations for future work.

Medical education videos - comparative analysis of sonography vs. clinical examination videos: user perception and educational value.

Project description:BackgroundVideo content has become an increasingly valuable tool in medical education, particularly for teaching hands-on skills like sonography and clinical examination. This study evaluates the satisfaction and content of sonography and clinical examination videos on the AMBOSS platform, a prominent medical education resource in Germany.ObjectiveThe goal of this study was to compare how effective and well-received sonography and clinical examination videos are on the AMBOSS platform. The study looked at aspects such as the medical and technical quality of the videos, their usefulness for learning, and overall user satisfaction.MethodsEighteen instructional videos were chosen and made accessible on the AMBOSS platform, grouped into sonography (n = 9) and clinical examination (n = 9) categories. Users were asked to voluntarily and anonymously fill out a questionnaire evaluating the videos. Over 49.5 months, data from 1,643,274 video views and 936 completed questionnaires were gathered.ResultsClinical examination videos were watched significantly more often than sonography videos (86 vs. 14%). Both video types were highly rated in terms of medical and technical quality. However, sonography videos were judged superior in technical quality and clarity, whereas clinical examination videos were preferred for their medical quality and practical application. Feedback from users indicated a desire for more detailed annotations and clearer explanations.ConclusionThe findings underline the crucial role of video resources in medical education, particularly in teaching practical skills. To improve educational outcomes, it is important to tailor content to the specific needs of medical students and professionals, incorporate user feedback, and take advantage of technological advancements.

Utilization of Educational Videos to Improve Communication and Discharge Instructions.

Project description:IntroductionWhen discharging a patient from the emergency department (ED), it is crucial to make sure that they understand their disposition and aftercare instructions. However, numerous factors make it difficult to ensure that patients understand their next steps. Our objective was to determine whether patient understanding of ED discharge and aftercare instructions could be improved through instructional videos in addition to standard written discharge instructions.MethodsThis was a prospective pre- and post-intervention study conducted at a single-center, academic tertiary care ED. Patients presenting with the five selective chief complaints (closed head injury, vaginal bleeding, laceration care, splint care, and upper respiratory infection) were given questionnaires after their discharge instructions to test comprehension. Once video discharge instructions were implemented, patients received standard discharge instructions in addition to video discharge instructions and were given the same questionnaire. A total of 120 patients were enrolled in each group.ResultsThere were significantly better survey scores after video discharge instructions (VDI) vs standard discharge instructions (SDI) for the closed head injury (27% SDI vs 46% VDI, P = 0.003); upper respiratory infection (28% SDI vs 64% VDI; P < 0.0001); and vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy groups (20% SDI vs 60% VDI, P < 0.0001). There were no significant differences in survey scores between the splint care (53% SDI vs 66% VDI; P = 0.08) and suture care groups (29% SDI vs 31% VDI; P = 0.40).ConclusionVideo discharge instructions supplementing standard written instructions can help improve patient comprehension and information retention. This better understanding of aftercare instructions is essential to patient follow-up and has been shown to improve patient outcomes.

Analysis of the Educational Value of YouTube Laparoscopic Appendectomy Videos.

Project description:PurposeTo evaluate the educational value of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) videos on YouTube for surgical trainees.MethodsThe search term "Laparoscopic appendectomy" was used on YouTube. The top 100 videos sorted by the number of views were evaluated. Each YouTube account was analyzed, and only videos uploaded by medical physicians were included in this study. Video quality was evaluated using an arbitrary appendectomy scoring system. Video characteristics and Global Operative Assessment of Laparoscopic Skills (GOALS) scores were analyzed regarding video quality and upload source.ResultsThe video quality of 14 (25.0%) videos was graded as good, 36 (64.3%) moderate, and 6 (10.7%) of poor quality. Video characteristic analysis showed no differences in video quality according to the upload source (p=0.573). Video quality and upload source were not related to video length, total views, days online, number of likes, number of dislikes, number of comments, or GOALS score. Among the factors analyzed, only appendicitis severity was found to be associated with video grade (p=0.049).ConclusionThe quality of LA YouTube videos varied. Categories considered as viewer feedback were not associated with video grade or upload source. Responsible video uploading by academic institutions, and appropriate censorship by YouTube seems necessary. Further research with objective data on actual application to surgical trainees is necessary.

Reliability of Ahmed glaucoma valve surgical videos for educational purposes.

Project description:PurposeThe use of video-based social media platforms is increasing among trainee residents, fellows, and practicing ophthalmologists. In this study, we objectively evaluate the quality of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation videos on open access, video-based internet platforms.DesignInternet-based cross-sectional study.ParticipantsNot applicable.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 23 websites publishing medical surgery training video content were queried using the keyword "Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation".Main outcome measuresThe descriptive statistics of video parameters were noted, and the videos were assessed using established scoring systems-Sandvik, Health on the Net Foundation Code of Conduct (HON code), mDISCERN, and Global Quality Score (GQS) scores. Video Quality Score (VQS) was determined based on the 14 steps per the AGV implantation rubric.ResultsOne hundred and nineteen videos were evaluated, and 35 were excluded. The total quality of all 84 videos according to their Sandvik, HON Code, GQS, DISCERN, and VQS scores was 11.79 ± 1.70 (excellent quality), 6.86 ± 0.75 (excellent quality), 3.97 ± 0.93 (good quality), 3.26 ± 0.66 (fair quality) and 11.45 ± 2.67 (good quality), respectively. No significant correlation was found between the descriptive parameters and video quality score. However, no significant correlation was found between the descriptive parameters and video quality score.ConclusionsThe objective analysis showed that the video quality ranged from good to excellent. AGV implantation videos were sparse on exclusive ophthalmology surgical video portals. Therefore, more peer-reviewed videos following standardized rubric are needed on open-access surgical video platforms.

Educational value of surgical videos on YouTube: quality assessment of laparoscopic appendectomy videos by senior surgeons vs. novice trainees.

Project description:BackgroundTo prepare for surgery, surgeons often recur to surgical videos, with YouTube being reported as the preferred source. This study aimed to compare the evaluation of three surgical trainees and three senior surgeons of the 25 most viewed laparoscopic appendectomy videos listed on YouTube. Additionally, we assessed the video conformity to the published guidelines on how to report laparoscopic surgery videos (LAP-VEGaS).MethodsBased on the number of visualization, the 25 most viewed videos on laparoscopic appendectomy uploaded on YouTube between 2010 and 2018 were selected. Videos were evaluated on the surgical technical performance (GOALS score), critical view of safety (CVS), and overall video quality and utility.ResultsVideo image quality was poor for nine (36%) videos, good for nine (36%), and in high definition for seven (28%). Educational content (e.g., audio or written commentary) was rarely present. With the exception of the overall level of difficulty, poor consistency was observed for the GOALS domains between senior surgeons and trainees. Fifteen videos (60%) demonstrated a satisfactory CVS score (≥ 5). Concerning the overall video quality, agreement among senior surgeons was higher (Cronbach's alpha 0.897) than among trainees (Cronbach's alpha 0.731). The mean overall videos utility (Likert scale, 1 to 5) was 1.92 (SD 0.88) for senior examiners, and 3.24 (SD 1.02) for trainee examiners. The conformity to the LAP-VEGaS guidelines was weak, with a median value of 8.1% (range 5.4-18.9%).ConclusionLaparoscopic videos represent a useful and appropriate educational tool but they are not sufficiently reviewed to obtained standard quality. A global effort should be made to improve the educational value of the uploaded surgical videos, starting from the application of the nowadays-available LAP-VEGaS guidelines.

Creating Custom Immersive 360-Degree Videos for Use in Clinical and Nonclinical Settings: Tutorial.

Project description:The use of virtual reality (VR) stimulation in clinical settings has increased in recent years. In particular, there has been increasing interest in the use of VR stimulation for a variety of purposes, including medical training, pain therapy, and relaxation. Unfortunately, there is still a limited amount of real-world 360-degree content that is both available and suitable for these applications. Therefore, this tutorial paper describes a pipeline for the creation of custom VR content. It covers the planning and designing of content; the selection of appropriate equipment; the creation and processing of footage; and the deployment, visualization, and evaluation of the VR experience. This paper aims to provide a set of guidelines, based on first-hand experience, that readers can use to help create their own 360-degree videos. By discussing and elaborating upon the challenges associated with making 360-degree content, this tutorial can help researchers and health care professionals anticipate and avoid common pitfalls during their own content creation process.

Cost-Efficient Medical Education: An Innovative Approach to Creating Educational Products.

Project description:BackgroundCost is a barrier to creating educational resources, and new educational initiatives are often limited in distribution. Medical training programs must develop strategies to create and implement cost-effective educational programming.ObjectiveWe developed high-quality medical programming in procedural instruction with efficient economics, reaching the most trainees at the lowest cost.MethodsThe Just-In-Time online procedural program was developed at the University of Toronto in Canada, aiming to teach thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture skills to internal medicine trainees. Commercial vendors quoted between CAD $50,000 and $100,000 to create 3 comprehensive e-learning procedural modules-a cost that was prohibitive. Modules were therefore developed internally, utilizing 4 principles aimed at decreasing costs while creating efficiencies: targeting talent, finding value abroad, open source expansion, and extrapolating efficiency.ResultsProcedural modules for thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture were created for a total cost of CAD $1,200, less than 3% of the anticipated cost in utilizing traditional commercial vendors. From November 2016 until October 2018, 1800 online instructional sessions have occurred, with over 3600 pageviews of content utilized. While half of the instructional sessions occurred within the city of Toronto, utilization was documented in 10 other cities across Canada.ConclusionsThe Just-in-Time online instructional program successfully created 3 procedural modules at a fraction of the anticipated cost and appeared acceptable to residents based on website utilization.
