Sickle cell disease is an inherited hemoglobinopathy leading to the synthesis of hemoglobin S. Hemoglobin S results in the formation of abnormal sickle-shaped erythrocytes that lead to hematologic abnormalities such as hemolytic anemia and increased risks of thrombosis.
