Theoretical studies on the two-photon absorption of II-VI semiconductor nano clusters.

ABSTRACT: Semiconductor clusters, Zn_nO_n, Zn_nS_n, and Cd_nS_n (n = 2-8), were optimized and the corresponding stable structures were acquired. The symmetry, bond length, bond angle, and energy gap between HOMO and LUMO were analyzed. According to reasonable calculation and comparative analysis for small clusters Zn₂O₂, Zn₂S₂, and Cd₂S₂, an effective method based on density function theory (DFT) and basis set which lay the foundation for the calculation of the large clusters have been obtained. The two-photon absorption (TPA) results show that for the nano clusters with planar configuration, sizes play important role on the TPA cross section, while symmetries determine the TPA cross section under circumstance of 3D stable structures. All our conclusions provide theoretical support for the development of related experiments.

Two-photon absorption and two-photon-induced isomerization of azobenzene compounds.

Project description:The process of two-photon-induced isomerization occurring in various organic molecules, among which azobenzene derivatives hold a prominent position, offers a wide range of functionalities, which can be used in both material and life sciences. This review provides a comprehensive description of nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of azobenzene (AB) derivatives whose geometries can be switched through two-photon absorption (TPA). Employing the nonlinear excitation process allows for deeper penetration of light into the tissues and provides opportunities to regulate biological systems in a non-invasive manner. At the same time, the tight focus of the beam needed to induce nonlinear absorption helps to improve the spatial resolution of the photoinduced structures. Since near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths are employed, the lower photon energies compared to usual one-photon excitation (typically, the azobenzene geometry change from trans to cis form requires the use of UV photons) cause less damage to the biological samples. Herein, we present an overview of the strategies for optimizing azobenzene-based photoswitches for efficient two-photon excitation (TPE) and the potential applications of two-photon-induced isomerization of azobenzenes in biological systems: control of ion flow in ion channels or control of drug release, as well as in materials science, to fabricate data storage media, optical filters, diffraction elements etc., based on phenomena like photoinduced anisotropy, mass transport and phase transition. The extant challenges in the field of two-photon switchable azomolecules are discussed.

Colors of entangled two-photon absorption.

Project description:Multiphoton absorption of entangled photons offers ways for obtaining unique information about chemical and biological processes. Measurements with entangled photons may enable sensing biological signatures with high selectivity and at very low light levels to protect against photodamage. In this paper, we present a theoretical and experimental study of the excitation wavelength dependence of the entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) process in a molecular system, which provides insights into how entanglement affects molecular spectra. We demonstrate that the ETPA excitation spectrum can be different from that of classical TPA as well as that for one-photon resonant absorption (OPA) with photons of doubled frequency. These results are modeled by assuming the ETPA cross-section is governed by a two-photon excited state radiative linewidth rather than by electron-phonon interactions, and this leads to excitation spectra that match the observed results. Further, we find that the two-photon-allowed states with highest TPA and ETPA intensities have high electronic entanglements, with ETPA especially favoring states with the longest radiative lifetimes. These results provide concepts for the development of quantum light-based spectroscopy and microscopy that will lead to much higher efficiency of ETPA sensors and low-intensity detection schemes.

Bright single photon emitters with enhanced quantum efficiency in a two-dimensional semiconductor coupled with dielectric nano-antennas.

Project description:Single photon emitters in atomically-thin semiconductors can be deterministically positioned using strain induced by underlying nano-structures. Here, we couple monolayer WSe2 to high-refractive-index gallium phosphide dielectric nano-antennas providing both optical enhancement and monolayer deformation. For single photon emitters formed on such nano-antennas, we find very low (femto-Joule) saturation pulse energies and up to 104 times brighter photoluminescence than in WSe2 placed on low-refractive-index SiO2 pillars. We show that the key to these observations is the increase on average by a factor of 5 of the quantum efficiency of the emitters coupled to the nano-antennas. This further allows us to gain new insights into their photoluminescence dynamics, revealing the roles of the dark exciton reservoir and Auger processes. We also find that the coherence time of such emitters is limited by intrinsic dephasing processes. Our work establishes dielectric nano-antennas as a platform for high-efficiency quantum light generation in monolayer semiconductors.

Two-photon absorption under few-photon irradiation for optical nanoprinting.

Project description:Two-photon absorption (TPA) has been widely applied for three-dimensional imaging and nanoprinting; however, the efficiency of TPA imaging and nanoprinting using laser scanning techniques is limited by its trade-off to reach high resolution. Here, we unveil a concept, few-photon irradiated TPA, supported by a spatiotemporal model based on the principle of wave-particle duality of light. This model describes the precise time-dependent mechanism of TPA under ultralow photon irradiance with a single tightly focused femtosecond laser pulse. We demonstrate that a feature size of 26 nm (1/20 λ) and a pattern period of 0.41 λ with a laser wavelength of 517 nm can be achieved by performing digital optical projection nanolithography under few-photon irradiation using the in-situ multiple exposure technique, improving printing efficiency by 5 orders of magnitude. We show deeper insights into the TPA mechanism and encourage the exploration of potential applications for TPA in nanoprinting and nanoimaging.

The Two-Photon Absorption Cross-Section Studies of CsPbX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) Nanocrystals.

Project description:The CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) with X = I, Br, Cl, or the mixture of Br:I and Br:Cl in a 1:1 ratio were synthesized and characterized by TEM, DLS, and XRD. Recrystallization of the small luminescent NCs in the metastable cubic phase into bigger orthorhombic nanocrystals was monitored by XRD and identified as the main cause of the nanocolloid coagulation. The recrystallization also leads to a decrease in the photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) of the colloidal solution and shortening of the emission lifetime. The two-photon absorption cross-section σ2 values calculated from femtosecond Z-scan measurements were compared with those obtained based on the two-photon excited emission technique. These two techniques were shown to be equivalent with the cross-section values calculated per molar mass of CsPbX3 perovskite being in the range of 10-200 GM depending on the halide anions X-. The σ2 values recalculated for the mole of the NCs were in the range of 104-105 GM, which is in good agreement with values previously reported elsewhere and the σ2/M parameter was in the range of 0.01 to 0.33. This study shows the perovskite NCs to be a good nonlinear material with the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) of the NCs on the order of 10-11 esu.

Interpretable Machine Learning of Two-Photon Absorption.

Project description:Molecules with strong two-photon absorption (TPA) are important in many advanced applications such as upconverted laser and photodynamic therapy, but their design is hampered by the high cost of experimental screening and accurate quantum chemical (QC) calculations. Here a systematic study is performed by collecting an experimental TPA database with ≈900 molecules, analyzing with interpretable machine learning (ML) the key molecular features explaining TPA magnitudes, and building a fast ML model for predictions. The ML model has prediction errors of similar magnitude compared to experimental and affordable QC methods errors and has the potential for high-throughput screening as additionally validated with the new experimental measurements. ML feature analysis is generally consistent with common beliefs which is quantified and rectified. The most important feature is conjugation length followed by features reflecting the effects of donor and acceptor substitution and coplanarity.

Absolute two-photon absorption spectra and two-photon brightness of orange and red fluorescent proteins.

Project description:Fluorescent proteins with long emission wavelengths are particularly attractive for deep tissue two-photon microscopy. Surprisingly, little is known about their two-photon absorption (2PA) properties. We present absolute 2PA spectra of a number of orange and red fluorescent proteins, including DsRed2, mRFP, TagRFP, and several mFruit proteins, in a wide range of excitation wavelengths (640-1400 nm). To evaluate 2PA cross section (sigma(2)), we use a new method relying only on the optical properties of the intact mature chromophore. In the tuning range of a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser, 700-1000 nm, TagRFP possesses the highest two-photon cross section, sigma(2) = 315 GM, and brightness, sigma(2)phi = 130 GM, where phi is the fluorescence quantum yield. At longer wavelengths, 1000-1100 nm, tdTomato has the largest values, sigma(2) = 216 GM and sigma(2)phi = 120 GM, per protein chain. Compared to the benchmark EGFP, these proteins present 3-4 times improvement in two-photon brightness.

High- and Reproducible-Performance Graphene/II-VI Semiconductor Film Hybrid Photodetectors.

Project description:High- and reproducible-performance photodetectors are critical to the development of many technologies, which mainly include one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure based and film based photodetectors. The former suffer from a huge performance variation because the performance is quite sensitive to the synthesis microenvironment of 1D nanostructure. Herein, we show that the graphene/semiconductor film hybrid photodetectors not only possess a high performance but also have a reproducible performance. As a demo, the as-produced graphene/ZnS film hybrid photodetector shows a high responsivity of 1.7 × 10(7) A/W and a fast response speed of 50 ms, and shows a highly reproducible performance, in terms of narrow distribution of photocurrent (38-65 μA) and response speed (40-60 ms) for 20 devices. Graphene/ZnSe film and graphene/CdSe film hybrid photodetectors fabricated by this method also show a high and reproducible performance. The general method is compatible with the conventional planar process, and would be easily standardized and thus pay a way for the photodetector applications.

Theoretical Prediction of Rhenium Separation from Ammonium Perrhenate by Phonon-Photon Resonance Absorption.

Project description:Rhenium (Re) is an extremely rare and precious element that is mainly used in the construction of aerospace components and satellite stations. However, an efficient and simple method for preparing Re has yet to be devised. To this end, we investigated the vibrational spectrum of ammonium perrhenate (NH4ReO4) using the CASTEP code based on first-principles density functional theory. We assigned the infrared (IR) absorption and Raman scattering spectra for NH4ReO4 using a dynamic process analysis of optical branch normal modes. We examined the IR-active peaks of Re-related vibrational modes in detail and found that the typical IR peak at approximately 914 cm-1 is due to the Re-O bond stretching. Thus, we posit that strong terahertz laser irradiation of NH4ReO4 at 914 cm-1 will lead to sufficient resonance absorption to cleave its Re-O bonds. This method could potentially be used to efficiently separate Re from its oxides.
