Sputtering onto liquids: a critical review.

ABSTRACT: Sputter deposition of atoms onto liquid substrates aims at producing colloidal dispersions of small monodisperse ultrapure nanoparticles (NPs). Since sputtering onto liquids combines the advantages of the physical vapor deposition technique and classical colloidal synthesis, the review contains chapters explaining the basics of (magnetron) sputter deposition and the formation of NPs in solution. This review article covers more than 132 papers published on this topic from 1996 to September 2021 and aims at providing a critical analysis of most of the reported data; we will address the influence of the sputtering parameters (sputter power, current, voltage, sputter time, working gas pressure, and the type of sputtering plasma) and host liquid properties (composition, temperature, viscosity, and surface tension) on the NP formation as well as a detailed overview of the properties and applications of the produced NPs.

Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers with Platinum Nanoparticles Synthesized by Sputtering onto Liquid Substrates.

Project description:Platinum (Pt) nanoparticles are widely used as catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In recent decades, sputter deposition onto liquid substrates has emerged as a potential alternative for nanoparticle synthesis, offering a synthesis process free of contaminant oxygen, capping agents, and chemical precursors. Here, we present a method for the synthesis of supported nanoparticles based on magnetron sputtering onto liquid poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) combined with a heat-treatment step for attachment of nanoparticles to a carbon support. Transmission electron microscopy imaging reveals Pt nanoparticle growth during the heat-treatment process, facilitated by the carbon support and the reducing properties of PEG. Following the heat treatment, a bimodal size distribution of Pt nanoparticles is observed, with sizes of 2.5 ± 0.8 and 6.7 ± 1.8 nm, compared to 1.8 ± 0.4 nm after sputtering. Synthesized Pt nanoparticles display excellent specific and mass activities for the oxygen reduction reaction, with 1.75 mA/cm2 Pt and 0.27 A/mgPt respectively, measured at 0.9 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode. The specific activities reported herein outperform literature values of commercial Pt/C catalysts with similar loading and are on par with values of bulk Pt and mass-selected nanoparticles of comparable size. Also, the mass activities agree well with the literature values. The results provide new insights into the growth processes of SoL-synthesized carbon-supported Pt catalyst nanoparticles, and most crucially, the high performance of the synthesized catalyst layers, along with the possibility of nanoparticle growth through a straightforward heat-treatment step at relatively low temperatures, offer a scalable new approach for producing fuel cell catalysts with more efficient material utilization and new material combinations.

Enhancing the adsorption of ionic liquids onto activated carbon by the addition of inorganic salts.

Project description:Most ionic liquids (ILs) are either water soluble or present a non-negligible miscibility with water that may cause some harmful effects upon their release into the environment. Among other methods, adsorption of ILs onto activated carbon (AC) has shown to be an effective technique to remove these compounds from aqueous solutions. However, this method has proved to be viable only for hydrophobic ILs rather than for the hydrophilic that, being water soluble, have a larger tendency for contamination. In this context, an alternative approach using the salting-out ability of inorganic salts is here proposed to enhance the adsorption of hydrophilic ILs onto activated carbon. The effect of the concentrations of Na2SO4 on the adsorption of five ILs onto AC was investigated. A wide range of ILs that allow the inspection of the IL cation family (imidazolium- and pyridinium-based) and the anion nature (accounting for its hydrophilicity and fluorination) through the adsorption onto AC was studied. In general, it is shown that the use of Na2SO4 enhances the adsorption of ILs onto AC. In particular, this effect is highly relevant when dealing with hydrophilic ILs that are those that are actually poorly removed by AC. In addition, the COnductor like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) was used aiming at complementing the experimental data obtained. This work contributes with the development of novel methods to remove ILs from water streams aiming at creating "greener" processes.

Data of interaction of supported ionic liquids phases onto copper nanoparticles: A density functional theory study.

Project description:This work contains data on the computational, structural, and electronic characterization of supported ionic liquids phases anchored to copper nanoparticles using Density Functional theory calculations. The data supplement the paper "Interaction of supported ionic liquids phases onto copper nanoparticles: A Density Functional Theory study" [1], based on the adsorption of ionic liquid onto a Cu nanoparticle is analyzed from a chemical and physical point of view. The chemical analysis is based on Atoms in Molecule theory (AIM) and allows us to differentiate the chemical binding nature between ionic liquid and copper nanoparticle. On the other hand, the energy decomposition analysis based on absolutely localized molecular orbital (ALMO-EDA) describes the physical contributions that govern the interaction between ionic liquid and the copper nanoparticles. Herein, detailed and extended information in the synthesis and computational characterization are presented.

Critical mingling and universal correlations in model binary active liquids.

Project description:Ensembles of driven or motile bodies moving along opposite directions are generically reported to self-organize into strongly anisotropic lanes. Here, building on a minimal model of self-propelled bodies targeting opposite directions, we first evidence a critical phase transition between a mingled state and a phase-separated lane state specific to active particles. We then demonstrate that the mingled state displays algebraic structural correlations also found in driven binary mixtures. Finally, constructing a hydrodynamic theory, we single out the physical mechanisms responsible for these universal long-range correlations typical of ensembles of oppositely moving bodies.

Microstructure-Dependent Visible-Light Driven Photoactivity of Sputtering-Assisted Synthesis of Sulfide-Based Visible-Light Sensitizer onto ZnO Nanorods.

Project description:The ZnO-CdS core-shell composite nanorods with CdS shell layer thicknesses of 5 and 20 nm were synthesized by combining the hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods with the sputtering thin-film deposition of CdS crystallites. The microstructures and optical properties of the ZnO-CdS nanorods were associated with the CdS shell layer thickness. A thicker CdS shell layer resulted in a rougher surface morphology, more crystal defects, and a broader optical absorbance edge in the ZnO-CdS rods. The ZnO-CdS (20 nm) nanorods thus engaged in more photoactivity in this study. When they were further subjected to a postannealing procedure in ambient Ar/H₂, this resulted in the layer-like CdS shell layers being converted into the serrated CdS shell layers. By contrast, the ZnO-CdS nanorods conducted with the postannealing procedure exhibited superior photoactivity and photoelectrochemical performance; the substantial changes in the microstructures and optical properties of the composite nanorods following postannealing in this study might account for the observed results.

The logarithmic relaxation process and the critical temperature of liquids in nano-confined states.

Project description:The logarithmic relaxation process is the slowest of all relaxation processes and is exhibited by only a few molecular liquids and proteins. Bulk salol, which is a glass-forming liquid, is known to exhibit logarithmic decay of intermediate scattering function for the β-relaxation process. In this article, we report the influence of nanoscale confinements on the logarithmic relaxation process and changes in the microscopic glass-transition temperature of salol in the carbon and silica nanopores. The generalized vibrational density-of-states of the confined salol indicates that the interaction of salol with ordered nanoporous carbon is hydrophilic in nature whereas the interaction with silica surfaces is more hydrophobic. The mode-coupling theory critical temperature derived from the QENS data shows that the dynamic transition occurs at much lower temperature in the carbon pores than in silica pores. The results of this study indicate that, under nano-confinements, liquids that display logarithmic β-relaxation phenomenon undergo a unique glass transition process.

Project description:The transition from maternal to zygotic gene expression during zygotic genome activation (ZGA) is tightly associated with chromatin accessibility modulated by maternal transcription factors. However, due to technical limitations, it remains elusive how the chromatin regulatory landscape is established in Xenopus tropicalis ZGA, and let alone DNA binding transcription regulators involved in this process. Here, by developing concanavalin A beads-based nucleus capture followed by Tn5-mediated accessible chromatin assay with sequencing (CANTAC-seq), we generated a first genome-wide map of accessible chromatin in X. tropicalis embryos from early blastula to neurula stage. We found that open chromatin landscape is progressively established at cis-regulatory elements during ZGA. Based on the motif analysis and perturbation experiments, we demostrated E2f1, a well-known transcriptional activator, maintains a repressive chromatin environment preceding minor ZGA. Moreover, we identified another maternal factor Otx1 counteracts the inhibitory function of E2f1. Mechanistically, E2f1 and Otx1 co-regulate a set of genes required for zygotic gene transcription and germ layer differentiation before the midblastula transition (MBT) through a seesaw model. Taken together, our data reveals the dynamic chromatin regulatory landscape that accompanies early development and elaborates on the function of a coupled transcriptional repressor-activator regulating zygotic gene transcription in a classical model organism.
