Green Efficient One-Pot Synthesis and Separation of Nitrones in Water Assisted by a Self-Assembled Nanoreactor.

ABSTRACT: This article reports an alternative method for preparing nitrones using a tetrahedral capsule as a nanoreactor in water. Using the hydrophobic cavity of the capsule allowed us to reduce the reaction times and easily separate the nitrones from the reaction mixture, obtaining reaction yields equal or comparable to those obtained with the methods already reported. Furthermore, at the basis of this methodology, there is an eco-friendly approach carried out that can certainly be extended to other synthesis methods for the preparation of other substrates by exploiting various types of macrocyclic hosts, suitably designed and widely used in supramolecular chemistry.

Novel fabrication of hydrophobic/oleophilic human hair fiber for efficient oil/water separation through one-pot dip-coating synthesis route.

Project description:Frequent oil spill accidents and industrial wastewater discharge has always been one of the most severe worldwide environmental problems. To cope with this problem, many fluorine-containing and high-cost materials with superwettability have been extensively applied for oil-water separation, which hinders its large-scale application. In this work, a novel human hair fiber (HHF)-polymerized octadecylsiloxane (PODS) fiber was fabricated with a facile one-pot dip-coating synthesis approach, inspired by the self-assembly performance and hydrophobicity of OTS modification. The benefits of prominent hydrophobic/lipophilic behavior lie in the low surface energy, and a rough PODS coating was rationally adhered on the surface of HHF. Driven solely by gravity and capillary force, the HHF-PODS showed excellent oil/water separation efficiency (> 99.0%) for a wide range of heavy and light oil/water mixtures. In addition, HHF-PODS demonstrated durability toward different harsh environments like alkaline, acid, and salty solutions.

Microwave assisted one-pot green synthesis of cinnoline derivatives inside natural sporopollenin microcapsules.

Project description:We present a green and efficient approach for the synthesis of novel cinnoline derivatives inside natural Lycopodium clavatum sporopollenin (LCS) microcapsules via a one-pot microwave (MW) assisted reaction for the first time. We also propose the concept that the robust micrometre-sized sporopollenin microcapsules can act as MW microreactors. We demonstrate the feasibility of this concept by in situ synthesising 8-hydroxy-7-nitro-6-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-oxo-2-(p-tolyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrahydrocinnoline-4-carbonitrile inside the LCS microcapsules via a microwave (MW) assisted reaction of ethyl 5-cyano-4-methyl-6-oxo-1-(p-tolyl)-1,6-dihydropyridazine-3-carboxylate with 1-nitro-2-phenylethylene in the presence of piperidine as a base at 100 °C for 20 minutes. The LCS microparticles are extensively characterised before and after the MW induced reaction using several techniques. The formation of the cinnoline compound inside the LCS microcapsules is confirmed by laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. Using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) analyses, we show that the structural integrity of the cinnoline compound, recovered from the cinnoline loaded (cinn-loaded) LCS, is preserved. The pure cinnoline is found to show promising optical properties with two λ max absorption peaks at 310 and 610 nm. Both the pure cinnoline and cinn-loaded LCS show promising antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative) and Bacillus cereus (Gram-negative) human pathogenic bacterial strains. The successful MW induced reaction of the prominent cinnoline derivative inside the biocompatible LCS microreactors can open up intriguing applications in materials and pharmaceutical sciences.

Microwave-Assisted, One-Pot Synthesis of Doxycycline under Heterogeneous Catalysis in Water.

Project description:The selective synthesis of active pharmaceutical molecules is a challenging issue, particularly when attempting to make the reactions even more sustainable. The present work focuses on the microwave-assisted hydrogenolysis of oxytetracycline to selectively produce α-doxycycline. Although the combination of microwave irradiation and a heterogeneous rhodium catalyst provided good conversions, the selective synthesis of active α-doxycycline was only achieved when an oxytetracycline-cyclodextrin complex was used as the starting material, giving the desired product at 34.0% yield in a one-step reaction under very mild conditions.

Green, Biodegradable, Underwater Superoleophobic Wood Sheet for Efficient Oil/Water Separation.

Project description:Superwettable (by water or oil) materials have been used in oil/water separation to cope with the growing oily industrial sewage discharge and oil spill accidents. The artificial superwetting materials for oil/water separation that have been previously reported are expensive, and using them usually causes secondary pollution, so practical, large-scale uses of those materials are limited. Here, we find that wood sheet shows underwater superoleophobicity and low oil adhesion in water, resulting from its strong capacity of absorbing water. A through-microhole array was created on the wood sheet surface by a simple mechanical drilling process. The prewetted porous sheet had great ability to separate the mixtures of water and oil with high separation efficiency. Wood is a low cost, green, and natural eco-friendly material; therefore, we believe that such a simple, low-cost, efficient, and green route of large-scale oil/water separation has great potential to practically solve the pollution problems caused by oil spill and oily industrial wastewater.

Multilayered Molybdate Microflowers Fabricated by One-Pot Reaction for Efficient Water Splitting.

Project description:The development of high-performance, low-cost and rapid-production bifunctional electrocatalysts towards overall water splitting still poses huge challenges. Herein, the authors utilize a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize a novel structure of Co-doped ammonium lanthanum molybdate on Ni foams (Co-ALMO@NF) as self-supported electrocatalysts. Owing to large active surfaces, lattice defect and conductive channel for rapid charge transport, Co-ALMO@NF exhibits good electrocatalytic performances which requires only 349/341 mV to achieve a high current density of 600 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Besides, a low cell voltage of 1.52 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline medium along with an excellent long-term stability for two-electrode configurations. Density functional theory calculations are performed to reveal the reaction mechanism on Co-ALMO@NF, which shows that the Mo site is the most favorable ones for HER, while the introduction of Co is beneficial to reduce the adsorption intensity on the surface of Co-ALMO@NF, thus accelerating OER process. This work highlighted the importance of the structural design for self-supporting electrocatalysts.

Fluorous-Assisted One-Pot Oligosaccharide Synthesis.

Project description:A new method for oligosaccharide assembly that combines the advantages of one-pot synthesis and fluorous separation is described. After one-pot glycosylations are completed, a fluorous tag is introduced into the reaction mixture to selectively "catch" the desired oligosaccharide, which is rapidly separated from non-fluorous impurities by fluorous solid-phase extraction (F-SPE). Subsequent "release" of the fluo rous tag and F-SPE achieved the purification of the desired oligosaccharide without the use of time- and solvent-consuming silica gel chromatography. Linear and branched oligosaccharides have been synthesized with this approach in just a few hours (for the overall oligosaccharide assembly and purification process).

Dihydropyrimidinones: efficient one-pot green synthesis using Montmorillonite-KSF and evaluation of their cytotoxic activity.

Project description:A simple, efficient, cost-effective, recyclable and green approach has been developed for the synthesis of new dihydropyrimidinone analogs via the Biginelli reaction. The methodology involves a multicomponent reaction catalyzed by "HPA-Montmorillonite-KSF" as a reusable and heterogeneous catalyst. This method gives an efficient and much improved modification of the original Biginelli reaction, in terms of yield and short reaction times under solvent free conditions. All the derivatives were subjected to cytotoxicity screening against a panel of four different human cancer cell lines viz. colon (Colo-205), prostate (PC-3), leukemia (THP-1) and lung (A549) to check their effect on percentage growth. MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-yl)-diphenyl tetrazoliumbromide] cytotoxicity assay was employed to check IC50 values. Of the synthesized analogs, 16a showed the best activity with IC50 of 7.1 ± 0.8, 13.1 ± 1.4, 13.8 ± 0.9 and 14.7 ± 1.1 μM against lung (A549), leukemia (THP-1), prostate (PC-3) and colon (Colo-205) cancer lines, respectively. The 16a analog was further checked for its effect on cancer cell properties through clonogenic (colony formation) and scratch motility (wound healing) assays and thereby was found that it reduced both the colony formation and migratory properties of the lung cancer cell line (A549). Further, molecular docking studies were performed with 16a to show its binding mode.

Hydrophobic covalent organic frameworks: a green synthesis approach for efficient oil/water separation.

Project description:Rapid economic development has led to oil pollution and energy shortage. Thus, it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and environment-friendly approach for oil/water (O/W) separation. Herein, we report a simple and green method for preparing macroscopic COF AG and AG. COF AG was rapidly synthesized at room temperature, washed and freeze-dried to prepare COF AG without any adhesives or additives. Due to its strong hydrophobicity, COF AG is used as an absorbent for removing organic pollutants in O/W separation, and has a certain demulsification performance, which has a certain application prospect in the field of O/W separation. The hydrophobic COF AG material was combined with MA, which was synthesized in one step at room temperature, avoiding the long reaction conditions of traditional high temperature and high-pressure reaction, as well as the post-modification process and complex washing steps. The superhydrophobic sponge material was rapidly prepared. The introduction of MA reduced the amount of COF monomer, improved the adsorption capacity of the material for organic solvents and oil samples, increased from 37 times of the previous maximum adsorption weight to more than 120 times, and the demulsification capacity of O/W emulsion increased to more than 99%, with the ability of direct separation and continuous separation of O/W. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophobic sponge has high adsorption capacity and good reusability, and can be used for O/W separation. This work not only provides a strategy for the construction of functional COF, but also opens up a way for the growth of COF on different carriers for O/W separation.
