Rapid Preparation of Fluorescent Carbon Dots from Pine Needles for Chemical Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Fluorescent carbon dots with blue, green, and red emissions were rapidly prepared from modified pine needles through microwave irradiation in a one-pot reaction. The fluorescence intensity and emission versatility for a carbon source were experimentally optimized. The reaction times were under 10 min and the reaction temperatures were lower than 220 °C. Potential applications of magnetic fluorescence-linked immunoassays of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were presented. The detection limits for CEA and TNF-α (3.1 and 2.8 pg mL-1, respectively) are lower than those presented in other reports, whereas the linear ranges for CEA and TNF-α (9 pg mL-1 to 18 ng mL-1 and 8.5 pg mL-1 to 17 ng mL-1, respectively) are wider than those presented in other reports. Magnetic immunoassays with fluorescent CDs prepared from pine needles can enable rapid, sensitive, and selective detections for biochemical analysis.

Full-color fluorescent carbon quantum dots.

Project description:Quantum dots have innate advantages as the key component of optoelectronic devices. For white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), the modulation of the spectrum and color of the device often involves various quantum dots of different emission wavelengths. Here, we fabricate a series of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) through a scalable acid reagent engineering strategy. The growing electron-withdrawing groups on the surface of CQDs that originated from acid reagents boost their photoluminescence wavelength red shift and raise their particle sizes, elucidating the quantum size effect. These CQDs emit bright and remarkably stable full-color fluorescence ranging from blue to red light and even white light. Full-color emissive polymer films and all types of high-color rendering index WLEDs are synthesized by mixing multiple kinds of CQDs in appropriate ratios. The universal electron-donating/withdrawing group engineering approach for synthesizing tunable emissive CQDs will facilitate the progress of carbon-based luminescent materials for manufacturing forward-looking films and devices.

Facile preparation of fluorescent carbon dots from water caltrop shells and their application in amikacin sensing.

Project description:Amikacin (AMK) effectively treats infections from Gram-negative bacilli and penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. However, prolonged administration of AMK may result in adverse effects such as nausea, headache, ototoxicity, and hearing loss, necessitating a reliable detection method. Carbon dots (CDs), known for their excellent optical properties, are a promising fluorescent probe. This study developed cost-effective, eco-friendly WCS-CDs from water caltrop shells using a simple hydrothermal process for AMK detection and analysis. The WCS-CDs emitted at 380 nm when excited at 290 nm and demonstrated selective sensitivity to AMK, with fluorescence quenching linearly related to AMK concentration from 1.5 to 21.5 μg mL-1 (Y = 376.98 + 57.75X, R 2 = 0.992). This simple method allows for accurate AMK quantification in real samples, achieving recoveries of 95.58-105.63%.

The Cost-Effective Preparation of Green Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Bioimaging and Enhanced Intracellular Drug Delivery.

Project description:Doxorubicin entrapped carbon dots (DOX-CDs) were prepared for bioimaging and enhanced intracellular drug delivery. The CDs were synthesized via the hydrothermal method using citrate and urea under 200 °C for 1 h. Then, DOX was successfully conjugated on the CDs via physicochemical interactions. The DOX-CDs exhibited good crystal structure, remarkable aqueous stability, excellent photoluminescence property, and a high quantum yield of 93%. The fluorescent images revealed that the DOX-CDs could be readily taken up by the cancer cells for cell labeling. Furthermore, endo-lysosomal pH-assisted DOX release behavior was observed from DOX-CDs, and the cytotoxicity of DOX-CDs was confirmed by the MTS assay against H0-8910 ovarian cancer cells. In addition, the CDs indicated bright fluorescent signal in the animal imaging test and demonstrated low toxicity after administration for 7 and 21 days. Therefore, the prepared CDs could be a promising imaging probe for biomedical imaging and intracellular drug delivery.

A Facile Preparation of Multicolor Carbon Dots.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C-N/C-S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications.

Green Preparation of Fluorescent Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Sensitive Detection of Oxytetracycline in Environmental Samples.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with strong fluorescence were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method using natural biomass waste. Two efficient fluorescent probes were constructed for selective and sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). The synthesized N-CQDs were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), which proved that the synthesized N-CQDs surface were functionalized and had stable fluorescence performance. The basis of N-CQDs detection of OTC was discussed, and various reaction conditions were studied. Under optimized conditions, orange peel carbon quantum dots (ON-CQDs) and watermelon peel carbon quantum dots (WN-CQDs) have a good linear relationship with OTC concentrations in the range of 2-100 µmol L-1 and 0.25-100 µmol L-1, respectively. ON-CQDs and WN-CQDs were both successfully applied in detecting the OTC in pretreated tap water, lake water, and soil, with the recovery rate at 91.724-103.206%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 5.35%. The results showed that the proposed N-CQDs proved to be green and simple, greatly reducing the detection time for OTC in the determination environment.

Preparation of Multicolour Solid Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Light-Emitting Diodes Using Phenylethylamine as a Co-Carbonization Agent.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new type of photoluminescent nanomaterial, have attracted extensive attention in various fields because of their unique luminescence properties. However, CDs will exhibit fluorescence quenching in the solid state or aggregate state, which limits their application. In this paper, a unique strategy is proposed to regulate solutions to achieve multicolour fluorescence of CDs in the solid state. We report the successful preparation of orange, green and blue solid fluorescent CDs using citric acid, urea and phenylethylamine as precursors and methanol, ethanol and water as solvents, respectively. The solid-state fluorescence of CDs may be caused by the linkage of the phenylethyl structure to the surface of CDs during formation, which effectively disperses the CDs and prevents π-π interactions between graphitized nuclei. Meanwhile, multicolour solid fluorescent CDs are realized by adjusting the solvent in the preparation process. Based on the excellent fluorescence properties of CDs, orange, green and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are prepared. A white LED (WLED) can be obtained by mixing the three colours of solid fluorescent CDs, which shows the application potential of CDs in display lighting equipment.

Carbon Derived from Pine Needles as a Na+-Storage Electrode Material in Dual-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Pine needles are used as the precursor material to prepare hard carbon. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and N2 adsorption-desorption tests are carried out to characterize the surface, crystal, and pore structure of the material. The pine needle derived carbon (PNC) exhibits excellent Na-ion storage ability. A dual-ion battery of PNC/graphite using a Na+-based organic electrolyte is constructed. The batteries display outstanding electrochemical performance: a superior energy density (200 Wh kg-1 at 131 W kg-1), high cut-off voltage (4.7 V), and outstanding cycling stability (87.2% retention after 1000 cycles). In addition, the separate responses of the cathode and anode are investigated.
