Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene Nanocomposites with Fibrillated Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) under Elevated Pressure.

ABSTRACT: Nanocomposites of isotactic polypropylene with 1-5 wt.% of fibrillated PTFE (PP/T) were prepared, and their crystallization during cooling under elevated pressure, in a wide pressure range, up to 300 MPa, as well as the resulting structure, were examined. The crystallization peak temperatures of PP/T, especially with 3 and 5 wt.% of PTFE, exceeded by up to 13 °C those of neat PP. Moreover, a fine-grain structure was formed in PP/T in the entire pressure range, which proved the ability of the fibrillated PTFE to nucleate crystallization of PP in the γ-form under elevated pressure. This also resulted in a higher crystallinity level developed in the γ-domain, before the temperature range of the α-domain was reached during cooling. Hence, the γ-content increased in comparison to that in neat PP, under the pressure up to 200 MPa, especially under 50-100 MPa.

Effect of benzoic acid surface modified alumina nanoparticles on the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene nanocomposites.

Project description:The effect of benzoic acid (BA) surface modified alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) on the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposites was studied. Characterization of the modified Al2O3 NPs (BA-Al2O3) by FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed that benzoic acid molecules chemisorb on the surface of the NPs, forming benzene groups-rich microstructures. A considerable increase in the tensile strength, flexural modulus, and toughness was observed for the nanocomposites with only 0.2 wt% BA-Al2O3. Enhanced interfacial adhesion with the matrix was achieved, which enabled effective reinforcement of the nanocomposites. The higher crystallization temperature along with shorter crystallization halftime indicated the higher nucleation activity of BA-Al2O3. Furthermore, the interchain conformational ordering of iPP was significantly accelerated in the presence of the BA-Al2O3 NPs. The CH-π interaction between the polymer and BA-Al2O3 NPs was considered to facilitate the attachment of the iPP chains and stimulate conformational ordering, crystallization, as well as mechanical properties of nanocomposites.

Composition Dependence of Flow-Induced Crystallization in High-Density Polyethylene/Isotactic Polypropylene Blends.

Project description:Polyolefins, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and isotactic polypropylene (iPP), account for over half of the worldwide plastics market and have wide-ranging applications. Recycling of these materials is hindered due to separation difficulties as co-mingled blends of HDPE and iPP often exhibit brittle mechanical behavior because phase separated domains detach under stress due to low interfacial adhesion. Motivated to improve mechanical properties of mixed recyclates during processing, this work examines the effect of shear on the crystallization kinetics and rheological properties of HDPE-iPP blends utilizing a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheo-Raman spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the quiescent experiments, the crystallization temperature as a function of blend composition exhibits a distinct decrease when the iPP forms the droplet phase, as expected, due to fractionated crystallization. In the presence of shear, we find elongated domains due to high capillary number. Unexpectedly, we find a compositional dependence to the flow-induced crystallization (FIC) of iPP: stronger FIC is observed in all blends compared to the pure iPP. Moreover, the flow completely counteracts the reduced crystallization arising from fractionated crystallization, indicating that the flow is able to induce nucleation in droplets to an extent such that it offsets the reduction in active nucleating agents in finite size droplets. We attribute these effects to differing microflow fields in the various morphologies as the iPP domains deform under shear.

Size Effect of Layered Double Hydroxide Platelets on the Crystallization Behavior of Isotactic Polypropylene.

Project description:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets with nanosized and microsized level were synthesized and used as fillers in an isotactic polypropylene (PP) matrix. The nucleation and crystallization behavior of PP/LDH composites (denoted as 1-PPLx and 2-PPLx for composites containing nanosized and microsized LDH, respectively; x represents the mass percentage of LDH) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy techniques. It is found that the crystallization temperature of PP/LDH composites is largely enhanced and the half crystallization time is reduced remarkably relative to pure PP, especially for 2-PPLx composite. The 2-PPLx composite exhibits stronger heterogeneous nucleating ability and faster crystallization rate than 1-PPLx samples with the same LDH loading. In addition, the crystallized PP/LDH composites possess significantly enhanced thermal stability, gas barrier, and flame-retardant properties relative to neat PP, which would show a broad application prospect in engineering plastics and packing industry.

Kinetics of Crystallization and Thermal Degradation of an Isotactic Polypropylene Matrix Reinforced with Graphene/Glass-Fiber Filler.

Project description:Polypropylene composites reinforced with a filler mixture of graphene nanoplatelet-glass fiber were prepared by melt mixing, while conventional composites containing graphene nanoplatelet and glass fiber were prepared for comparative reasons. An extensive study of thermally stimulated processes such as crystallization, nucleation, and kinetics was carried out using Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermogravimetric Analysis. Moreover, effective activation energy and kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition process were determined by applying Friedman's isoconversional differential method and multivariate non-linear regression method. It was found that the graphene nanoplatelets act positively towards the increase in crystallization rate and nucleation phenomena under isothermal conditions due to their large surface area, inherent nucleation activity, and high filler content. Concerning the thermal degradation kinetics of polypropylene graphene nanoplatelets/glass fibers composites, a change in the decomposition mechanism of the matrix was found due to the presence of graphene nanoplatelets. The effect of graphene nanoplatelets dominates that of the glass fibers, leading to an overall improvement in performance.

Effect of <i>N</i>,<i>N</i>'-Dicyclohexyldicarboxamide Homologues on the Crystallization and Properties of Isotactic Polypropylene.

Project description:Application of nucleating agents is the most versatile and industrially applied way to manipulate the crystalline structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Various materials possess a nucleating effect, but from the viewpoint of dispersibility, the partially soluble ones are the most advantageous. Our objective was to synthesize new N,N'-dicyclohexyldicarboxamide homologues and study their applicability as nucleating agents in iPP. Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) and infrared spectroscopy were used to prove that the synthesis reactions were successful. Thermal stability of the compounds was investigated with simultaneous thermal analysis. Nucleating efficiency and solubility were characterized by polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Polarized light microscopy was also applied to study the effect of novel additives on the morphology of iPP. The properties, important from the viewpoint of applicability, were also investigated. Tensile tests were performed to characterize the main mechanical properties, and standard haze measurements were performed to characterize optical properties. It can be concluded that the investigated compounds are partially soluble nucleating agents and influence the crystalline structure of iPP. Most of the studied compounds have a moderate nucleating efficiency, but a very interesting dendritic structure develops in their presence. Two of them proved to be non-selective β-nucleating agents, which result in a remarkable improvement of impact resistance and higher opacity.

Effect of Self-Assembly of Oxalamide Based Organic Compounds on Melt Behavior, Nucleation, and Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene.

Project description:We report on the effect of an aliphatic oxalamide based nucleating agent (OXA3,6) on the melt and crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) under defined shear conditions. Through polarized optical microscopy, we demonstrate that OXA3,6 self-assembles from the iPP melt into rhombic crystals whereas their size and distribution proved highly dependent on the employed cooling rates. The presence of 0.5 wt % of OXA3,6 in iPP results in a significant suppression in iPP melt viscosity, which could not be explained via molecular modeling. A possible cause for the drop in viscosity in the presence of OXA3,6 is attributed to the interaction (absorption) of high molecular weight iPP chains with the nucleating agent, thereby suppressing their contribution to the viscoelastic response of the melt. This proposed mechanism for the suppression in melt viscosity appears similar to that encountered by the homogeneous distribution of nanoparticles such as CNTs, graphene, and silica. Shear experiments, performed using a slit flow device combined with small-angle X-ray diffraction measurements, indicate that crystallization is significantly enhanced in the presence of OXA3,6 at relatively low shear rates despite its lowered sensitivity to shear. This enhancement in crystallization is attributed to the shear alignment of the rhombic OXA3,6 crystals that provide surface for iPP kebab growth upon cooling. Overall, the suppression in melt viscosity in combination with enhanced nucleation efficiency at low as well as high shear rates makes this self-assembling oxalamide based nucleating agent a promising candidate for fast processing.

Investigation on the Effect of Hyperbranched Polyester Grafted Graphene Oxide on the Crystallization Behaviors of β-Nucleated Isotactic Polypropylene.

Project description:In this article, hyperbranched polyester grafted graphene oxide (GO) was successfully prepared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed for its characterizations. On the other hand, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) were also performed to study its influences on non-isothermal crystallization behaviors of β-nucleated isotactic polypropylene (β-iPP). The grafting ratios of hyperbranched polyester with different supermolecular structures were calculated to be 19.8-24.0 wt %, which increase with the degree of branching. The results showed that the grafting of hyperbranched polyester was advantageous in increasing the crystallization peak temperature Tp and decreasing the crystallization activation energy ΔE of β-iPP/GO composites, which contributed to the iPP's crystallization process. Moreover, under all cooling rates (2, 5, 10, 20, 40 °C/min), crystallinities of β-iPP/GO were greatly improved after being grafted with hyperbranched polyester, because of the increase of the relative contents of α-phase αc and the average α-crystal sizes.

Enhanced Mechanical Toughness of Isotactic Polypropylene Using Bulk Molybdenum Disulfide.

Project description:Herein, we report the use of bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as the reinforcing agent to enhance the toughness of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The iPP-MoS2 nanocomposites with varying amounts of MoS2 (0.1 to 5 wt %) were prepared by a one-step melt extrusion method, and the effects of MoS2 on the morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties were evaluated by different instrumental techniques such as Raman, ATR-FTIR, UTM, TEM, TGA, and DSC. TEM images showed the uniform dispersion of multilayer MoS2 in the polymer matrix, and XRD results suggested the formation of the β phase when a low amount of MoS2 is loaded in the composites. Mechanical tests revealed a significant increase in the toughness and elongation at break (300-400%) in the composites containing low amounts of MoS2 (0.25 to 0.5 wt %). Enhanced toughness and elongation in iPP could be related to the combined effect of the β phase and the exfoliation of bulk MoS2 under applied stress. The thermal stability of the composites was also improved with the increase in MoS2 loading. Direct utilization of bulk MoS2 and one-step melt extrusion process could be a cost-effective method to induce high elasticity and toughness in iPP.

Isotactic-Polypropylene/Atactic-Polystyrene Miktoarm Star Copolymers: Synthesis and Aggregation Morphology.

Project description:In this work, a series of isotactic-polypropylene/atactic-polystyrene (iPP/aPS) miktoarm star copolymers, PxSy, was synthesized via an arm-first approach. Varied star macromolecule architectures were fabricated by designing the arm length and the arm numbers (x and y). These miktoarm stars were able to form micelles in selective solvent (N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF)), in which the insoluble iPP arms formed the core and the soluble aPS arms formed the shell. The miktoarm polymers aggregated to micro-nanoscale binary structures (MNBSes) in the casting process, and their morphologies, including the MNBS shape and size, were greatly influenced by the PxSy architectures. The MNBSes endowed the material surface with superhydrophobic performance with a water contact angle of 157.0° and a sliding angle of 1.5°.

Perfectly Isotactic Polypropylene upon In Situ Activation of Ultrarigid meso Hafnocenes.

Project description:For more than 40 years, the synthesis of C2 -symmetric indenyl-based racemic metallocenes for the isoselective polymerization of propylene relied on a tedious separation of the produced rac and meso isomers. Status quo, latter are considered wasteful as they produce atactic polypropylene (aPP) rather than isotactic polypropylene (iPP) if activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO). Unexpectedly, the in situ activation of meso hafnocene I yielded perfectly isotactic polypropylene. We verified an isomerization of the meso compound to the corresponding racemic one upon triisobutylaluminum (TIBA) addition via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and established an easy and convenient polymerization protocol, enabling productivities comparable to pure rac-I if applied to pure meso-I or a mixture of both isomers. With this established isomerization protocol, the potential yield of iPP was enhanced by more than 400 %. This protocol was also shown to be applicable to other meso hafnocenes and some initial mechanistic insights were received.
