Novel Metal-Free Fluorescent Sensor Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer N-CDs@MIP for Highly Selective Detection of TNP.

ABSTRACT: In this article, we designed a fluorometric sensor based on nitrogen-passivated carbon dots infused with a molecularly imprinted polymer (N-CDs@MIP) via a reverse microemulsion technique using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a functional monomer, tetraethoxysilane as a cross-linker, and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) as a template. The synthesized probe was used for selective and sensitive detection of trace amounts of TNP. The infusion of N-CDs (QY-21.6 percent) with a molecularly imprinted polymer can increase the fluorescent sensor sensitivity to detect TNP. Removal of template molecules leads to the formation of a molecularly imprinted layer, and N-CDs@MIP fluorescence response was quenched by TNP. The developed fluorescence probe shows a fine linear range from 0.5 to 2.5 nM with a detection limit of 0.15 nM. The synthesized fluorescent probe was used to analyze TNP in regular tap and lake water samples.

A chitosan gold nanoparticles molecularly imprinted polymer based ciprofloxacin sensor.

Project description:In this work, we present a novel study on the development of an electrochemical biomimetic sensor to detect the ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic. A chitosan gold nanoparticles decorated molecularly imprinted polymer (Ch-AuMIP) was used to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for preparation of the sensor. The Ch-AuMIP was characterized to understand various properties like chemical composition, morphology, roughness, and conduction using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) respectively. Several experimental conditions affecting the Ch-AuMIP/GCE sensor such as the CIP removal agent, the extraction time, the volume of Ch-AuMIP drop-cast onto GCE and the rebinding time were studied and optimized. The Ch-AuMIP sensor sensitivity was studied in the concentration range of 1-100 μmol L-1 exhibiting a limit of detection of 210 nmol L-1. The synergistic combination of Au nanoparticles and Ch-MIP helps detect the CIP antibiotic with good sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. We investigated the selectivity aspect by using some possible interfering species and the developed sensing system showed good selectivity for CIP with a 66% response compared to the other compounds (≤45% response). The proposed sensing strategy showed its applicability for successful detection of CIP in real samples like tap water, mineral water, milk, and pharmaceutical formulation. The developed sensor showed good selectivity towards CIP even among the analogue molecules of Norfloxacin (NFX) and Ofloxacin (OFX). The developed sensor was successfully applied to determine the CIP in different samples with a satisfactory recovery in the range of 94 to 106%.

Highly dispersive PEI-modified CDs@ZIF-L dual-emitting fluorescent sensor for detecting metal ions.

Project description:The leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) is a promising porous nanomaterial that has attracted increasing attention as an ideal host material to encapsulate functional fluorescent nanoparticles for designing fluorescent sensors. However, owing to the large particle size, gravity readily facilitates the precipitation of the ZIF-L from the aqueous solution, and thus lead to imperfect experimental results. Herein, we report a simple and rapid synthetic method which uses the polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified ZIF-L as a host to solve the precipitation problem and construct a dual-emitting system that combines its fluorescence with carbon dots (CDs). Furthermore, CDs@ZIF-L/PEI with dual-emitting centres could be utilised as a ratio fluorescence sensor to detect Hg2+ ions. The sensor exhibited excellent dispersibility and good selectivity for sensing Hg2+ ions, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 14.5 nM. Furthermore, experimental results reveal that the CDs@ZIF-L/PEI fluorescent sensor could be effectively dispersed into agarose and less polar organic solvents such as DMF, MeOH, EtOH and CH3CN, expanding the application scope of the fluorescent sensor.

Highly sensitive and selective detection of naproxen <i>via</i> molecularly imprinted carbon dots as a fluorescent sensor.

Project description:The overuse and inappropriate discharge of naproxen, a common anti-inflammatory medication and an emerging contaminant in water, is detrimental to human health and bodies of water. Here, we design a fluorescent sensor based on molecularly imprinted carbon dots (CDs) for highly selective detection of trace amounts of naproxen. The CDs were encapsulated into the pores of silica through a sol-gel based method and provide fluorescent signal. After removal of the template molecules, a molecularly imprinted polymer layer was formed and the fluorescence of the CDs sensor was selectively quenched by naproxen. A detection limit of as low as 0.03 μM and a linear range of 0.05-4 μM for detecting naproxen in aqueous solution were obtained. High recoveries of naproxen levels in waste water and urine samples for practical application were also achieved. In addition, the accurate detection performance of sensor was maintained during the UV degradation of naproxen.

Molecularly Imprinted Magnetic Fluorescent Nanocomposite-Based Sensor for Selective Detection of Lysozyme.

Project description:A new strategy for the design and construction of molecularly imprinted magnetic fluorescent nanocomposite-based-sensor is proposed. This multifunctional nanocomposite exhibits the necessary optics, magnetism and biocompatibility for use in the selective fluorescence detection of lysozyme. The magnetic fluorescent nanocomposites are prepared by combining carboxyl- functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles with l-cysteine-modified zinc sulfide quantum dots (MNP/QDs). Surface molecular imprinting technology was employed to coat the lysozyme molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the MNP/QDs to form a core-shell structure. The molecularly imprinted MNP/QDs (MNP/QD@MIPs) can rapidly separate the target protein and then use fluorescence sensing to detect the protein; this reduces the background interference, and the selectivity and sensitivity of the detection are improved. The molecularly imprinted MNP/QDs sensor presented good linearity over a lysozyme concentration range from 0.2 to 2.0 μM and a detection limit of 4.53 × 10-3 μM for lysozyme. The imprinting factor of the MNP/QD@MIPs was 4.12, and the selectivity coefficient ranged from 3.19 to 3.85. Furthermore, the MNP/QD@MIPs sensor was applied to detect of lysozyme in human urine and egg white samples with recoveries of 95.40-103.33%. Experimental results showed that the prepared MNP/QD@MIPs has potential for selective magnetic separation and fluorescence sensing of target proteins in biological samples.

Electrochemical sensor based on bio-inspired molecularly imprinted polymer for sofosbuvir detection.

Project description:The electropolymerized molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) have enabled the utilization of various functional monomers with superior selective recognition of the target analyte template. Methyldopa is an attractive synthetic dopamine analogue which has phenolic, carboxylic, and aminic functional groups. In this research, methyldopa was exploited to fabricate selective MIPs, for the detection of sofosbuvir (SFB), by a simple electropolymerization step onto a disposable pencil graphite electrode (PGE) substrate. The interaction between methyldopa, as a functional monomer, and a template has been investigated experimentally by UV spectroscopy. A polymethyldopa (PMD) polymer was electrografted onto PGE in the presence of SFB as a template. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ESI), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used for the characterization of the fabricated sensor. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of a ferrocyanide/ferricyanide redox probe was employed to indirectly detect the SFB binding to the MIP cavities. The sensor shows a reproducible and linear response over a dynamic linear range from 1.0 × 10-11 M to 1.0 × 10-13 M of SFB with a limit of detection of 3.1 × 10-14 M. The sensor showed high selectivity for the target drug over structurally similar and co-administered interfering drugs, and this enabled its application to detect SFB in its pharmaceutical dosage form and in spiked human plasma samples.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for the Detection of Cefalexin.

Project description:In this study, a new electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of cefalexin (CFX), based on the use of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) obtained by electro‒polymerization in an aqueous medium of indole-3-acetic acid (I3AA) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and on boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE). The two different electrodes were used in order to assess how their structural differences and the difference in the potential applied during electrogeneration of the MIP translate to the performances of the MIP sensor. The quantification of CFX was performed by using the electrochemical signal of a redox probe before and after the rebinding of the template. The modified electrode was characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The influence of different parameters on the fabrication of the sensor was tested, and the optimized method presented high selectivity and sensitivity. The MIP-based electrode presented a linear response for CFX concentration range of 10 to 1000 nM, and a limit of detection of 3.2 nM and 4.9 nM was obtained for the BDDE and the GCE, respectively. The activity of the sensor was successfully tested in the presence of some other cephalosporins and of other pharmaceutical compounds. The developed method was successfully applied to the detection of cefalexin from real environmental and pharmaceutical samples.

Fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer particles for glyphosate detection using phase transfer agents.

Project description:In this work, molecular imprinting was combined with direct fluorescence detection of the pesticide Glyphosate (GPS). Firstly, the solubility of highly polar GPS in organic solvents was improved by using lipophilic tetrabutylammonium (TBA+) and tetrahexylammonium (THA+) counterions. Secondly, to achieve fluorescence detection, a fluorescent crosslinker containing urea-binding motifs was used as a probe for GPS-TBA and GPS-THA salts in chloroform, generating stable complexes through hydrogen bond formation. The GPS/fluorescent dye complexes were imprinted into 2-3 nm fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) shells on the surface of sub-micron silica particles using chloroform as porogen. Thus, the MIP binding behavior could be easily evaluated by fluorescence titrations in suspension to monitor the spectral changes upon addition of the GPS analytes. While MIPs prepared with GPS-TBA and GPS-THA both displayed satisfactory imprinting following titration with the corresponding analytes in chloroform, GPS-THA MIPs displayed better selectivity against competing molecules. Moreover, the THA+ counterion was found to be a more powerful phase transfer agent than TBA+ in a biphasic assay, enabling the direct fluorescence detection and quantification of GPS in water. A limit of detection of 1.45 µM and a linear range of 5-55 µM were obtained, which match well with WHO guidelines for the acceptable daily intake of GPS in water (5.32 µM).

Molecularly imprinted polymer decorated nanoporous gold for highly selective and sensitive electrochemical sensors.

Project description:Electrochemical nanosensors based on nanoporous gold leaf (NPGL) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) are developed for pharmaceutical analysis by using metronidazole (MNZ) as a model analyte. NPGL, serving as the loading platform for MIP immobilization, possesses large accessible surface area with superb electric conductivity, while electrochemically synthesized MIP thin layer affords selectivity for specific recognition of MNZ molecules. For MNZ determination, the hybrid electrode shows two dynamic linear range of 5 × 10(-11) to 1 × 10(-9) mol L(-1) and 1 × 10(-9) to 1.4 × 10(-6) mol L(-1) with a remarkably low detection limit of 1.8 × 10(-11) mol L(-1) (S/N = 3). In addition, the sensor exhibits high binding affinity and selectivity towards MNZ with excellent reproducibility and stability. Finally, the reliability of MIP-NPGL for MNZ detection is proved in real fish tissue samples, demonstrating the potential for the proposed electrochemical sensors in monitoring drug and biological samples.

A Simple and Selective Fluorescent Sensor Chip for Indole-3-Butyric Acid in Mung Bean Sprouts Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Coatings.

Project description:In this paper, we report the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymer coatings on quartz chips for selective solid-phase microextraction and fluorescence sensing of the auxin, indole-3-butyric acid. The multiple copolymerization method was used to prepare polymer coatings on silylated quartz chips. The polymer preparation conditions (e.g., the solvent, monomer, and cross-linker) were investigated systemically to enhance the binding performance of the imprinted coatings. Direct solid-phase fluorescence measurements on the chips facilitated monitoring changes in coating performance. The average binding capacity of an imprinted polymer coated chip was approximately 152.9 µg, which was higher than that of a non-imprinted polymer coated chip (60.8 µg); the imprinted coatings showed the highest binding to IBA among the structural analogues, indicating that the coatings possess high selectivity toward the template molecule. The developed method was used for the determination of the auxin in mung bean extraction, and the recovery was found to be in the range of 91.5% to 97.5%, with an RSD (n = 3) of less than 7.4%. Thus, the present study provides a simple method for fabricating a fluorescent sensor chip for selective analysis.

A Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Porous Silicon Optical Sensor for Quercetin Detection in Wines.

Project description:Quercetin (QU), a bioactive flavonoid with significant nutritional and antioxidant properties, plays a vital role in the quality and stability of wine. This study presents the development of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based optical sensor for the selective and sensitive detection of quercetin in red and white wines. The sensor combines the selective molecular recognition capabilities of MIPs with the optical properties of nanostructured porous silica (PSiO2) scaffolds, which serve as the transducer. MIP synthesis was achieved through a novel room-temperature vapor-phase polymerization method using pyrrole as the functional monomer. Computational simulations were used to optimize pyrrole interactions with QU and at the polymer level, to explore the binding interactions of QU with the resulting polypyrrole (PPy) matrix. Comprehensive characterization including UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy and advanced surface analyses confirmed successful MIP formation. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity in a dual linear response range (2.5-80 μM and 80-200 μM), with a detection limit of 0.7 μM. Selectivity tests against structurally similar flavonoids and antioxidants demonstrated a significantly higher response to quercetin, with an imprinting factor of 3.6. The sensor was validated using real wine samples, demonstrating the ability to detect quercetin without prior sample preparation. Results showed strong agreement with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), confirming the sensor reliability. Additionally, the sensor exhibited excellent reusability with minimal signal variation (RSD = 2.6%) and good stability over 60 days (RSD = 3%). This work highlights the potential of MIP-based optical sensors for the real-time monitoring of bioactive compounds in complex food matrices, such as wine, offering a robust and cost-effective alternative for quality control applications.
