Novel Clarification of Surface Plasmon Coupling Reactions of Aromatic Alkynamine and Nitro Compounds.

ABSTRACT: This work presents a theoretical and experimental approach for the coupling of 4-ethynylaniline (4-APA) and 4-ethynylnitrobenzene (4-NPA) in the theoretical application of density functional theory (DFT) and experimental monitoring of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results support electromagnetic enhancement to drive the conversion of aromatic alkynamine and nitro compounds and regulation by the catalytic coupling reaction conditions. In addition, this work investigates the adsorption site effect of surface plasmon coupling reactions of 4-APA and 4-NPA molecules into alkynyl azo compounds. This study presents theoretical and experimental images used to analyze the plasmon-driven surface catalytic reaction system.

Project description:Lewis basic salts promote benzyltrimethylsilane coupling with (hetero)aryl nitriles, sulfones, and chlorides as a new route to 1,1-diarylalkanes. This method combines the substrate modularity and selectivity characteristic of cross-coupling with the practicality of a base-promoted protocol. In addition, a Lewis base strategy enables a complementary scope to existing methods, employs stable and easily prepared organosilanes, and achieves selective arylation in the presence of acidic functional groups. The utility of this method is demonstrated by the synthesis of pharmaceutical analogues and its use in multicomponent reactions.

Coupling of a dipolar emitter into one-dimensional surface plasmon.

Project description:Quantum plasmonics relies on a new paradigm for light-matter interaction. It benefits from strong confinement of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) that ensures efficient coupling at a deep subwavelength scale, instead of working with a long lifetime cavity polariton that increases the duration of interaction. The large bandwidth and the strong confinement of one dimensional SPP enable controlled manipulation of a nearby quantum emitter. This paves the way to ultrafast nanooptical devices. However, the large SPP bandwidth originates from strong losses so that a clear understanding of the coupling process is needed. In this report, we investigate in details the coupling between a single emitter and a plasmonic nanowire, but also SPP mediated coupling between two emitters. We notably clarify the role of losses in the Purcell factor, unavoidable to achieve nanoscale confinement down to 10(-4)(λ/n)(3). Both the retarded and band-edge quasi-static regimes are discussed.

Localized Surface Plasmon Coupling between Mid-IR-Resonant ITO Nanocrystals.

Project description:Sn-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanocrystals (NC) provide tunable localized surface plasmon resonance in the mid-infrared. To evaluate the applicability of these n-doped plasmonic semiconductors in field-enhanced spectroscopies, it is necessary to assess how the low, free-electron density affects the E-field localization and plasmon coupling in NC films when compared to metal nanoparticles (NP). In this article, we investigate plasmon coupling between approximate 6 nm diameter ITO NC on the collective resonance and quantify the effect of the electromagnetic field enhancement on the absorbance signal of surface-attached ligands in NC films and monolayers with different ratios of doped and undoped indium oxide NC.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of compounds with Craig-Mobius aromaticity.

Project description:Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions are widely regarded as characteristic reactions of aromatic species, but no comparable reaction has been reported for molecules with Craig-Möbius aromaticity. Here, we demonstrate successful EAS reactions of Craig-Möbius aromatics, osmapentalenes, and fused osmapentalenes. The highly reactive nature of osmapentalene makes it susceptible to electrophilic attack by halogens, thus osmapentalene, osmafuran-fused osmapentalene, and osmabenzene-fused osmapentalene can undergo typical EAS reactions. In addition, the selective formation of a series of halogen substituted metalla-aromatics via EAS reactions has revealed an unprecedented approach to otherwise elusive compounds such as the unsaturated cyclic chlorirenium ions. Density functional theory calculations were conducted to study the electronic effect on the regioselectivity of the EAS reactions.

Bimolecular Coupling Reactions through Oxidatively Generated Aromatic Cations: Scope and Stereocontrol.

Project description:Chromenes, isochromenes, and benzoxathioles react with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone to form stable aromatic cations that react with a range of nucleophiles. These oxidative fragment coupling reactions provide rapid access to structurally diverse heterocycles. Conducting the reactions in the presence of a chiral Brønsted acid results in the formation of an asymmetric ion pair that can provide enantiomerically enriched products in a rare example of a stereoselective process resulting from the generation of a chiral electrophile through oxidative carbon-hydrogen bond cleavage.

Directional coupling of surface plasmon polaritons at complementary split-ring resonators.

Project description:We propose a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) for a directional coupling of surface plasmon polaritons. An air-slot split-ring in a gold film is investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The normally incident light couples to either a monopole or a dipole SPP depending on the polarization of light. Adjusting the angle of the linear polarization of the incident light enables a one-way propagation of SPPs on the gold film. Theoretical analysis based on the propagation of cylindrical waves from the SPP point source is provided with Hankel function. The propagated power in one direction is obtained to be 30 times higher than the opposite direction with a coupling efficiency of 18.2% from the simulation for an array of the CSRRs. This approach to the directional coupling of SPPs will be advantageous for miniaturizing photonic and plasmonic circuits and devices.

Surface plasmon coupling between wide-field SPR microscopy and gold nanoparticles.

Project description:The coupling behavior of the wide field surface plasmon microscopy (WF-SPRM) with single-, two-, and multiple-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with different AuNPs sizes is investigated using theoretical, simulation, and experimental approaches. The signal intensity of a single AuNP increases from 208 a.u. to 583 a.u. as particle size increases from 40 to 80 nm, which evidences the signal-building mechanism of Rayleigh scattering theory. A discrete particle model of SPR is used to understand the interaction between an Au-layer and a single AuNP. The calculated intensity profile of the single AuNP from the discrete particle model is accepted with the experimental data. In addition, the superposition between 2-AuNPs surface plasmon waves is studied using the finite element method as well as experimental data from WF-SPRM. The surface plasmon waves around the two particles generate an interference pattern. Finally, it is demonstrated that plasmonic multiple particles scattering can be represented by an effective media, which is described by Maxwell-Garnet equations.

Hydride-induced Meisenheimer complex formation reflects activity of nitro aromatic anti-tuberculosis compounds.

Project description:The formation efficiency of hydride-induced Meisenheimer complexes of nitroaromatic compounds is consistent with their anti-TB activities exemplied by MDL860 and benzothiazol N-oxide (BTO) analogs. Herein we report that nitro cyano phenoxybenzenes (MDL860 and analogs) reacted slowly and incompletely which reflected their moderate anti-TB activity, in contrast to the instantaneous reaction of BTO derivatives to quantitatively generate Meisenheimer complexes which corresponded to their enhanced anti-TB activity. These results were corroborated by mycobacterial and radiolabelling studies that confirmed inhibition of the DprE1 enzyme by BTO derivatives but not MDL860 analogs.

Au-Ag Alloy Nanoshuttle Mediated Surface Plasmon Coupling for Enhanced Fluorescence Imaging.

Project description:Surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE), a novel signal enhancement technology generated by the interactions between surface plasmons and excited fluorophores in close vicinity to metallic film, has shown excellent performance in bioimaging. Variable-angle nanoplasmonic fluorescence microscopy (VANFM), based on an SPCE imaging system, can selectively modulate the imaging depth by controlling the excitation angles. In order to further improve the imaging performance, Au-Ag alloy nanoshuttles were introduced into an Au substrate to mediate the plasmonic properties. Benefiting from the strong localized plasmon effect of the modified SPCE chip, better imaging brightness, signal-to-background ratio and axial resolution for imaging of the cell membrane region were obtained, which fully displays the imaging advantages of SPCE system. Meanwhile, the imaging signal obtained from the critical angle excitation mode was also amplified, which helps to acquire a more visible image of the cell both from near- and far-field in order to comprehensively investigate the cellular interactions.
