Conversion of Calcium Citrate to Citric Acid with Compressed CO₂.

ABSTRACT: Citric acid is mainly produced in the fermentation industry, which needs complex processes and produces a high amount of CaSO₄ as waste. In this study, CO₂ has been used to convert calcium citrate to citric acid and CaCO₃ by controlling the reaction parameters (reactants ratio, temperature, and pressure). The CaCO₃ produced in this conversion could further be used in the fermentation industry for citric acid production. The transformation condition has been optimized by controlling temperature, pressure, reaction time, and mass ratio of calcium citrate and water. The highest conversion could reach up to 94.7% under optimal experimental conditions of 18 MPa of pressure, 65 °C of reaction temperature, 4 h of reaction time, and 2 g/L of calcium citrate/water suspension solution. This method features simple process, easy separation of citric acid, and environmentally friendly process, which could be a potentially alternative route for downstream treatment in fermentation production of citric acid.

Impact of Potassium Citrate vs Citric Acid on Urinary Stone Risk in Calcium Phosphate Stone Formers.

Project description:PurposeTo our knowledge no medication has been shown to be effective for preventing recurrent calcium phosphate urinary stones. Potassium citrate may protect against calcium phosphate stones by enhancing urine citrate excretion and lowering urine calcium but it raises urine pH, which increases calcium phosphate saturation and may negate the beneficial effects. Citric acid can potentially raise urine citrate but not pH and, thus, it may be a useful countermeasure against calcium phosphate stones. We assessed whether these 2 agents could significantly alter urine composition and reduce calcium phosphate saturation.Materials and methodsIn a crossover metabolic study 13 recurrent calcium phosphate stone formers without hypercalciuria were evaluated at the end of 3, 1-week study phases during which they consumed a fixed metabolic diet and received assigned study medications, including citric acid 30 mEq twice daily, potassium citrate 20 mEq twice daily or matching placebo. We collected 24-hour urine specimens to perform urine chemistry studies and calculate calcium phosphate saturation indexes.ResultsUrine parameters did not significantly differ between the citric acid and placebo phases. Potassium citrate significantly increased urine pH, potassium and citrate compared to citric acid and placebo (p <0.01) with a trend toward lower urine calcium (p = 0.062). Brushite saturation was increased by potassium citrate when calculated by the relative supersaturation ratio but not by the saturation index.ConclusionsCitric acid at a dose of 60 mEq per day did not significantly alter urine composition in calcium phosphate stone formers. The long-term impact of potassium citrate on calcium phosphate stone recurrence needs to be studied further.

Sustainable citric acid production from CO2 in an engineered cyanobacterium.

Project description:Citric acid is one of the most widely used organic acids in the world, with applications ranging from acidity regulation in food and beverages to metal chelation in hydrometallurgical processes. Most of its production is currently derived from fermentative processes, using plant-derived carbon feedstocks. While these are currently dominant, there is an increasing need to develop closed-loop production systems that reduce process carbon footprint. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that an engineered marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 can be used as a sustainable chassis for the photosynthetic conversion of CO2 to citric acid. Decreased citric acid cycle flux, through the use of a theophylline-responsive riboswitch, was combined with improved flux through citrate synthase and enhanced citric acid excretion, resulting in a significant improvement to citric acid production. While allowing citrate production, this strategy induces a growth defect which can be overcome by glutamate supplementation or by fine-tuning aconitase levels, resulting in an increase in production relative to WT of over 100-fold. This work represents a first step toward sustainable production of a commodity organic acid from CO2.

Totally green cellulose conversion into bio-oil and cellulose citrate using molten citric acid in an open system: synthesis, characterization and computational investigation of reaction mechanisms.

Project description:The simultaneous transformation of crystalline or amorphous cellulose into a furan-based bio-oil and cellulose citrate was realized avoiding the use of strong inorganic acids, drastic conditions, enzymatic treatments or microorganism fermentation. This innovative method is very eco-friendly and involves the use of molten citric acid under solvent free conditions at atmospheric pressure. An accurate discussion on chemical composition of the bio-oil enriched in bioprivileged molecules as well as structural and morphological characterization of cellulose citrate was reported. Moreover, mechanistic hypotheses were formulated on the basis of experimental findings and detailed DFT quantum-mechanical simulations were carried out to confirm, step by step, the proposed reaction paths.

Nanophase-Separated Copper-Zirconia Composites for Bifunctional Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to Formic Acid.

Project description:A copper-zirconia composite having an evenly distributed lamellar texture, Cu#ZrO2, was synthesized by promoting nanophase separation of the Cu51Zr14 alloy precursor in a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O2). High-resolution electron microscopy revealed that the material consists of interchangeable Cu and t-ZrO2 phases with an average thickness of 5 nm. Cu#ZrO2 exhibited enhanced selectivity toward the generation of formic acid (HCOOH) by electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) in aqueous media at a Faradaic efficiency of 83.5% at -0.9 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. In situ Raman spectroscopy has revealed that a bifunctional interplay between the Zr4+ sites and the Cu boundary leads to amended reaction selectivity along with a large number of catalytic sites.

Improving photosensitization for photochemical CO2-to-CO conversion.

Project description:Inspired by nature, improving photosensitization represents a vital direction for the development of artificial photosynthesis. The sensitization ability of photosensitizers (PSs) reflects in their electron-transfer ability, which highly depends on their excited-state lifetime and redox potential. Herein, for the first time, we put forward a facile strategy to improve sensitizing ability via finely tuning the excited state of Ru(II)-PSs (Ru-1-Ru-4) for efficient CO2 reduction. Remarkably, [Ru(Phen)2(3-pyrenylPhen)]2+ (Ru-3) exhibits the best sensitizing ability among Ru-1-Ru-4, over 17 times higher than that of typical Ru(Phen)3 2+. It can efficiently sensitize a dinuclear cobalt catalyst for CO2-to-CO conversion with a maximum turnover number of 66 480. Systematic investigations demonstrate that its long-lived excited state and suitable redox driving force greatly contributed to this superior sensitizing ability. This work provides a new insight into dramatically boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction via improving photosensitization.

Bi/mZVI Combined with Citric Acid and Sodium Citrate to Mineralize Multiple Sulfa Antibiotics: Performance and Mechanism.

Project description:The oxidative mineralization of sulfanilamide drugs (SAs) using micro-size zero-valent iron (mZVI) cooperated with a citric acid buffer solution was evaluated. In this study SM2, SMX, and SD could be removed at 66%, 89%, and 83%, respectively, in a 0.5% Bi/mZVI+CA+NaCA system within 2 h. Based on our analysis, the produced ·OH could be ascribed from the complexation between citrate iron (Fe(II)[Cit]-) and the generated H2O2 resulting from the activation of O2 on the mZVI surface in the Bi/mZVI+CA+NaCA system, further inducing the mineralization of antibiotics. The related possible degradation pathways were proposed. Two similar degradation pathways of SM2, SMX, and SD in the mixed liquid, including hydroxylation and SO2 extrusion, were solved. Meanwhile, there was an additional proposed degradation pathway for SMX to be degraded more effectively, as reflected in the opening of the N-O bond on the benzene ring. Therefore, this work provides an experimental basis and theoretical support for the efficient treatment of antibiotic wastewater in real industry by using an iron-based method.

Aqueous phase conversion of CO2 into acetic acid over thermally transformed MIL-88B catalyst.

Project description:Sustainable production of acetic acid is a high priority due to its high global manufacturing capacity and numerous applications. Currently, it is predominantly synthesized via carbonylation of methanol, in which both the reactants are fossil-derived. Carbon dioxide transformation into acetic acid is highly desirable to achieve net zero carbon emissions, but significant challenges remain to achieve this efficiently. Herein, we report a heterogeneous catalyst, thermally transformed MIL-88B with Fe0 and Fe3O4 dual active sites, for highly selective acetic acid formation via methanol hydrocarboxylation. ReaxFF molecular simulation, and X-ray characterisation results show a thermally transformed MIL-88B catalyst consisting of highly dispersed Fe0/Fe(II)-oxide nanoparticles in a carbonaceous matrix. This efficient catalyst showed a high acetic acid yield (590.1 mmol/gcat.L) with 81.7% selectivity at 150 °C in the aqueous phase using LiI as a co-catalyst. Here we present a plausible reaction pathway for acetic acid formation reaction via a formic acid intermediate. No significant difference in acetic acid yield and selectivity were noticed during the catalyst recycling study up to five cycles. This work is scalable and industrially relevant for carbon dioxide utilisation to reduce carbon emissions, especially when green methanol and green hydrogen are readily available in future.

Defining Pt-compressed CO2 synergy for selectivity control of furfural hydrogenation.

Project description:The development of a sustainable methodology for catalytic transformation of biomass-derived compounds to value-added chemicals is highly challenging. Most of the transitions are dominated by the use of additives, complicated reaction steps and large volumes of organic solvents. Compared to traditional organic solvents, alternative reaction media, which could be an ideal candidate for a viable extension of biomass-related reactions are rarely explored. Here, we elucidate a selective and efficient transformation of a biomass-derived aldehyde (furfural) to the corresponding alcohol, promoted in compressed CO2 using a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Furfural contains a furan ring with C[double bond, length as m-dash]C and an aldehyde group, and is extremely reactive in a hydrogen atmosphere, resulting in several by-products and a threat to alcohol selectivity as well as catalyst life. The process described has a very high reaction rate (6000 h-1) with an excellent selectivity/yield (99%) of alcohol, without any organic solvents or metal additives. This strategy has several key features over existing methodologies, such as reduced waste, and facile product separation and purification (reduced energy consumption). Combining the throughput of experimental observation and molecular dynamics simulation, indeed the high diffusivity of compressed CO2 controls the mobility of the compound, and eventually maintains the activity of the catalyst. Results are also compared for different solvents and solvent-less conditions. In particular, combination of an effective Pt catalyst with compressed CO2 provides an encouraging alternative solution for upgradation of biomass related platform molecules.

Early warning of citric acid overdose and timely adjustment of regional citrate anticoagulation based on machine learning methods.

Project description:BackgroundRegional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is an important local anticoagulation method during bedside continuous renal replacement therapy. To improve patient safety and achieve computer assisted dose monitoring and control, we took intensive care units patients into cohort and aiming at developing a data-driven machine learning model to give early warning of citric acid overdose and provide adjustment suggestions on citrate pumping rate and 10% calcium gluconate input rate for RCA treatment.MethodsPatient age, gender, pumped citric acid dose value, 5% NaHCO3 solvent, replacement fluid solvent, body temperature value, and replacement fluid PH value as clinical features, models attempted to classify patients who received regional citrate anticoagulation into correct outcome category. Four models, Adaboost, XGBoost, support vector machine (SVM) and shallow neural network, were compared on the performance of predicting outcomes. Prediction results were evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score.ResultsFor classifying patients at the early stages of citric acid treatment, the accuracy of neutral networks model is higher than Adaboost, XGBoost and SVM, the F1-score of shallow neutral networks (90.77%) is overall outperformed than other models (88.40%, 82.17% and 88.96% for Adaboost, XGBoost and SVM). Extended experiment and validation were further conducted using the MIMIC-III database, the F1-scores for shallow neutral networks, Adaboost, XGBoost and SVM are 80.00%, 80.46%, 80.37% and 78.90%, the AUCs are 0.8638, 0.8086, 0.8466 and 0.7919 respectively.ConclusionThe results of this study demonstrated the feasibility and performance of machine learning methods for monitoring and adjusting local regional citrate anticoagulation, and further provide decision-making recommendations to clinicians point-of-care.

A scalable membrane electrode assembly architecture for efficient electrochemical conversion of CO2 to formic acid.

Project description:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid is a promising pathway to improve CO2 utilization and has potential applications as a hydrogen storage medium. In this work, a zero-gap membrane electrode assembly architecture is developed for the direct electrochemical synthesis of formic acid from carbon dioxide. The key technological advancement is a perforated cation exchange membrane, which, when utilized in a forward bias bipolar membrane configuration, allows formic acid generated at the membrane interface to exit through the anode flow field at concentrations up to 0.25 M. Having no additional interlayer components between the anode and cathode this concept is positioned to leverage currently available materials and stack designs ubiquitous in fuel cell and H2 electrolysis, enabling a more rapid transition to scale and commercialization. The perforated cation exchange membrane configuration can achieve >75% Faradaic efficiency to formic acid at <2 V and 300 mA/cm2 in a 25 cm2 cell. More critically, a 55-hour stability test at 200 mA/cm2 shows stable Faradaic efficiency and cell voltage. Technoeconomic analysis is utilized to illustrate a path towards achieving cost parity with current formic acid production methods.
