Dataset of exponential growth rate values corresponding non-spherical bubble oscillations under dual-frequency acoustic irradiation.

ABSTRACT: The dataset described in this paper is related to the paper [1], in which the exponential growth rate values of a spherically oscillating gas bubble modelled by the Keller-Miksis equation are recorded. As the bubble is excited by dual-frequency, the employed parameters are the pressure amplitudes and frequencies corresponding to the first and second harmonic components, respectively, the phase shift between harmonic components, and the equilibrium bubble radius. At each parameter combinations the exponential growth rate values corresponding to mode 2 up to mode 6, and the maximum bubble radius are stored. The huge amount of numerical data are generated that are stored in a public repository [2]. The present paper describes the generated data, the applied numerical model and the implementation details of the program code used to generate the data on graphics processing units (GPUs).

GPU accelerated numerical investigation of the spherical stability of an acoustic cavitation bubble excited by dual-frequency.

Project description:The spherical stability of an acoustic cavitation bubble under dual-frequency excitation is investigated numerically. The radial dynamics is described by the Keller-Miksis equation, which is a second-order ordinary differential equation. The surface dynamics is modelled by a set of linear ordinary differential equation according to Hao and Prosperetti (1999), which takes into account the effect of vorticity by boundary layer approximation. Due to the large amount of investigated parameter combinations, the numerical computations were carried out on graphics processing units. The results showed that for bubble size between RE=2μm and 4μm, the combination of a low and a high frequency, and the combination of two close but not equal frequencies are important to prevent the bubble losing its shape stability, while reaching the chemical threshold (Rmax/RE=3) (Kalmár et al., 2020). The phase shift between harmonic components of dual-frequency excitation has no effect on the shape stability.

Bubble oscillations at low frequency ultrasound for biological applications.

Project description:Bubbles oscillating in the presence of ultrasound is commonly employed in biomedical applications for drug delivery, ultrasound enhanced thrombolysis, and the transport and manipulation of cells. This is possible because bubbles tend to interact with the ultrasound to undergo periodic shape changes known as shape-mode oscillation, concomitant with the generation of liquid agitation or streaming. This phenomenon is examined both experimentally and theoretically on a single bubble at a frequency of (45 ± 1) kHz. Effects of ultrasonic frequency and power on the flowfield were explored. Experiments revealed different trends in the development of liquid streaming velocities at different acoustic forcing conditions (5.53, 6.80 and 7.02 Vpp), with lowest (0.5 mm/s) and highest (1.1 mm/s) values of time-averaged mean streaming velocity occurring at 6.80 Vpp and 7.02 Vpp, respectively. Simulations captured the simultaneous evolution of bubble-shapes that helped create flow vortices in the liquid surrounding the bubble. These vortices collectively responsible in generating signature patterns in the liquid for a dominant shape-mode of the bubble, and could also generate localised shear stresses for practical application. The velocity and pressure profiles in the liquid around the bubble confirmed the connection of the applied and reflected soundwaves in driving this phenomenon.

Giant frequency down-conversion of the dancing acoustic bubble.

Project description:We have demonstrated experimentally the existence of a giant frequency down-conversion of the translational oscillatory motion of individual submillimeter acoustic bubbles in water in the presence of a high frequency (500 kHz) ultrasonic standing wave. The frequency of the translational oscillations (~170 Hz) is more than three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the driving acoustic wave. We elucidate the mechanism of this very slow oscillation with an analytical model leading to an equation of translational motion of a bubble taking the form of Mathieu's equation. This equation illuminates the origin of the giant down conversion in frequency as arising from an unstable equilibrium. We also show that bubbles that form chains along the direction of the acoustic standing wave due to radiation interaction forces exhibit also translation oscillations that form a spectral band. This band extends approximately from 130 Hz up to nearly 370 Hz, a frequency range that is still at least three orders of magnitude lower than the frequency of the driving acoustic wave.

Multi-bubble scattering acoustic fields in viscoelastic tissues under dual-frequency ultrasound.

Project description:Bubbles are widely used in the medical field due to their strong acoustic scattering properties, and the interaction between bubbles affects the scattering acoustic field caused by the bubble cluster. In this study, the dynamic equations of bubbles oscillating in viscoelastic tissues are solved numerically. The effect of bubble interaction on the scattered acoustic pressure under dual-frequency ultrasound is analyzed. In addition, the frequency spectra of the scattered acoustic waves due to the bubbles with and without considering the interaction are compared. The results show that the suppression or enlargement of the scattered sound pressure caused by the interaction between bubbles is related to the bubble radius and the incident frequency. Moreover, when the incident frequency is equal to the resonant frequency of the bubble with equilibrium radius R0, the effect of resonant bubbles is stronger than that of non-resonant bubbles. Meanwhile, for the multi-bubble system with a small bubble number density, the total response of the bubble cluster can be approximated as an algebraic sum of the dynamical behavior of individual bubbles.

Model for the dynamics of a spherical bubble undergoing small shape oscillations between parallel soft elastic layers.

Project description:A model is developed for a pulsating and translating gas bubble immersed in liquid in a channel formed by two soft, thin elastic parallel layers having densities equal to that of the surrounding liquid and small, but finite, shear moduli. The bubble is nominally spherical but free to undergo small shape deformations. Shear strain in the elastic layers is estimated in a way which is valid for short, transient excitations of the system. Coupled nonlinear second-order differential equations are obtained for the shape and position of the bubble, and numerical integration of an expression for the liquid velocity at the layer interfaces yields an estimate of the elastic layer displacement. Numerical integration of the dynamical equations reveals behavior consistent with laboratory observations of acoustically excited bubbles in ex vivo vessels reported by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 034301 (2011) and Ultrasound Med. Biol. 37, 2139-2148 (2011)].

Acoustic frequency and optimum sonochemical production at single and multi-bubble scales: A modeling answer to the scaling dilemma.

Project description:The present work consists of an innovative approach aiming to address the scalability dilemma of the sonochemical activity dependency of acoustic frequency. The study originates from the discordance of observations between the theoretical investigations of the sonochemical activity of the single acoustic cavitation bubble in function of the acoustic frequency, in one hand, and the experimental findings regarding the optimal frequency condition, mainly in terms of pollutant degradation, in the other hand. A single bubble and an up-scaled model of the sonochemical activity are suggested and simulations were conducted based on both of them over the frequencies 20, 200, 300, 360, 443, 500, 600 and 800 kHz under an oxygen atmosphere. The results reveal that the sonochemical production at single bubble scale is monotonously decreasing with the increase of frequency, while all the products demonstrate an absolute optimum of sonochemical production at 200 kHz, except HO• that attains its maximum molar yield under 300 kHz. Besides, the production of the predominant species, namely HO2•, HO• and O3, manifests a clear rebound at 500 kHz. All the present results were compared to and confirmed by experimental findings, while the scalability of the concentrations of sonochemically produced species was discussed using a parameter we introduced as "the mass focusing factor".

Near-field acoustic imaging with a caged bubble.

Project description:Bubbles are ubiquitous in many research applications ranging from ultrasound imaging and drug delivery to the understanding of volcanic eruptions and water circulation in vascular plants. From an acoustic perspective, bubbles are resonant scatterers with remarkable properties, including a large scattering cross-section and strongly sub-wavelength dimensions. While it is known that the resonance properties of bubbles depend on their local environment, it remains challenging to probe this interaction at the single-bubble level due to the difficulty of manipulating a single resonating bubble in a liquid. Here, we confine a cubic bubble inside a cage using 3D printing technology, and we use this bubble as a local probe to perform scanning near-field acoustic microscopy-an acoustic analog of scanning near-field optical microscopy. By probing the acoustic interaction between a single resonating bubble and its local environment, we demonstrate near-field imaging of complex structures with a resolution that is two orders of magnitudes smaller than the wavelength of the acoustic field. As a potential application, our approach paves the way for the development of low-cost acoustic microscopes based on caged bubbles.

Optic generation and perpetuation of acoustic bubble clusters.

Project description:Laser-induced cavitation bubbles offer precise control of the flow in space and time, but they are rarely used for the mechanical and chemical processing of liquids. Instead, strong acoustic fields are commonly used to nucleate and drive cavitation bubbles for liquid process applications. While acoustic field creates many more cavitation events, the resulting chaotic dynamics offers little control on the fluid mechanics, i.e., where and how bubbles deliver their energy. Here we present a method that utilizes a laser to nucleate a single cavitation bubble, which is then driven into violent oscillations by the ultrasound field, resulting in splitting of the bubble followed by formation of a cluster of cavitation bubbles. This combination offers means for cavitation control not available in conventional acoustic cavitation. Here, the cavitation bubble is generated with a custom build pulsed laser that is focused below a sonotrode driven at 20 kHz. In absence of the acoustic driving the bubble reaches a maximum diameter of 130 µm with a lifetime of approximately 10 µs. In the presence of the acoustic field the first few expansions and bubble collapses are strongly affected by the phase of nucleation. Over successive acoustic cycles a small bubble cluster develops that loses its connection with the phase of generation. We study the dynamics in the free field and constrained by a rigid boundary. For both geometries the cluster over many acoustic cycles dies off, yet through repetitive optical bubble seeding the cluster lifetime and its location can be controlled.

Structuring colloidal gels <i>via</i> micro-bubble oscillations.

Project description:Locally (re)structuring colloidal gels - micron-sized particles forming a connected network with arrested dynamics - can enable precise tuning of the micromechanical and -rheological properties of the system. A recent experimental study [B. Saint-Michel, G. Petekidis, and V. Garbin, Soft Matter, 2022, 18, 2092] showed that local ordering can be rapidly induced by acoustically modulating an embedded microbubble. Here, we perform Brownian dynamics simulations to understand the mechanical effect of an oscillating microbubble on the next-to-bubble structure of the embedding colloidal gel. Our simulations reveal hexagonal-close-packed structures over a range that is comparable to the amplitude of the oscillations. However, we were unable to reproduce the unexpectedly long-ranged modification of the gel structure - dozens of amplitudes - observed in experiment. This suggests including long-ranged effects, such as fluid flow, should be considered in future computational work.

Acoustic vibrational resonance in a Rayleigh-Plesset bubble oscillator.

Project description:The phenomenon of vibrational resonance (VR) has been investigated in a Rayleigh-Plesset oscillator for a gas bubble oscillating in an incompressible liquid while driven by a dual-frequency force consisting of high-frequency, amplitude-modulated, weak, acoustic waves. The complex equation of the Rayleigh-Plesset bubble oscillator model was expressed as the dynamics of a classical particle in a potential well of the Liénard type, thus allowing us to use both numerical and analytic approaches to investigate the occurrence of VR. We provide clear evidence that an acoustically-driven bubble oscillates in a time-dependent single or double-well potential whose properties are determined by the density of the liquid and its surface tension. We show both theoretically and numerically that, besides the VR effect facilitated by the variation of the parameters on which the high-frequency depends, amplitude modulation, the properties of the liquid in which the gas bubble oscillates contribute significantly to the occurrence of VR. In addition, we discuss the observation of multiple resonances and their origin for the double-well case, as well as their connection to the low frequency, weak, acoustic force field.
