Global holiday datasets for understanding seasonal human mobility and population dynamics.

ABSTRACT: Public and school holidays have important impacts on population mobility and dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales, subsequently affecting the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and many socioeconomic activities. However, worldwide data on public and school holidays for understanding their changes across regions and years have not been assembled into a single, open-source and multitemporal dataset. To address this gap, an open access archive of data on public and school holidays in 2010-2019 across the globe at daily, weekly, and monthly timescales was constructed. Airline passenger volumes across 90 countries from 2010 to 2018 were also assembled to illustrate the usage of the holiday data for understanding the changing spatiotemporal patterns of population movements.

Global gridded population datasets systematically underrepresent rural population.

Project description:Numerous initiatives towards sustainable development rely on global gridded population data. Such data have been calibrated primarily for urban environments, but their accuracy in the rural domain remains largely unexplored. This study systematically validates global gridded population datasets in rural areas, based on reported human resettlement from 307 large dam construction projects in 35 countries. We find large discrepancies between the examined datasets, and, without exception, significant negative biases of -53%, -65%, -67%, -68%, and -84% for WorldPop, GWP, GRUMP, LandScan, and GHS-POP, respectively. This implies that rural population is, even in the most accurate dataset, underestimated by half compared to reported figures. To ensure equitable access to services and resources for rural communities, past and future applications of the datasets must undergo a critical discussion in light of the identified biases. Improvements in the datasets' accuracies in rural areas can be attained through strengthened population censuses, alternative population counts, and a more balanced calibration of population models.

Understanding Human Mobility from Twitter.

Project description:Understanding human mobility is crucial for a broad range of applications from disease prediction to communication networks. Most efforts on studying human mobility have so far used private and low resolution data, such as call data records. Here, we propose Twitter as a proxy for human mobility, as it relies on publicly available data and provides high resolution positioning when users opt to geotag their tweets with their current location. We analyse a Twitter dataset with more than six million geotagged tweets posted in Australia, and we demonstrate that Twitter can be a reliable source for studying human mobility patterns. Our analysis shows that geotagged tweets can capture rich features of human mobility, such as the diversity of movement orbits among individuals and of movements within and between cities. We also find that short- and long-distance movers both spend most of their time in large metropolitan areas, in contrast with intermediate-distance movers' movements, reflecting the impact of different modes of travel. Our study provides solid evidence that Twitter can indeed be a useful proxy for tracking and predicting human movement.

Global spatio-temporally harmonised datasets for producing high-resolution gridded population distribution datasets.

Project description:Multi-temporal, globally consistent, high-resolution human population datasets provide consistent and comparable population distributions in support of mapping sub-national heterogeneities in health, wealth, and resource access, and monitoring change in these over time. The production of more reliable and spatially detailed population datasets is increasingly necessary due to the importance of improving metrics at sub-national and multi-temporal scales. This is in support of measurement and monitoring of UN Sustainable Development Goals and related agendas. In response to these agendas, a method has been developed to assemble and harmonise a unique, open access, archive of geospatial datasets. Datasets are provided as global, annual time series, where pertinent at the timescale of population analyses and where data is available, for use in the construction of population distribution layers. The archive includes sub-national census-based population estimates, matched to a geospatial layer denoting administrative unit boundaries, and a number of co-registered gridded geospatial factors that correlate strongly with population presence and density. Here, we describe these harmonised datasets and their limitations, along with the production workflow. Further, we demonstrate applications of the archive by producing multi-temporal gridded population outputs for Africa and using these to derive health and development metrics. Understanding the dynamics of seasonal influenza in Italy: incidence, transmissibility and population susceptibility in a 9-year period.

Project description:ObjectivesInfluenza surveillance systems have been established in many countries in the world, yielding timely information about the intensity and features of seasonal outbreaks. Such data have also been used to estimate epidemiological parameters and to evaluate the effect of factors on infection dynamics. However, little is known about the extent of under-reporting in surveillance data, and thus of the true influenza incidence in the population.DesignThrough mathematical and statistical modelling, we analysed Italian epidemiological and virological surveillance data collected together with serological data derived from influenza vaccine clinical trials performed in Italy.ResultsDepending on the season, the reporting rate estimates ranged between 20% and 33% of the total incidence with higher reporting rates in seasons dominated by A/H3N2 virus. Despite a generally higher number of individuals immune against A/H3N2 viruses, effective reproduction ratios were quite similar in all seasons varying between 1·2 and 1·4. We observed an age-dependent transmissibility for different subtypes: susceptible children were more likely than susceptible adults and elderly to get infected when A/H1N1 or B strains were circulating, while no clear age-dependence was found for A/H3N2. We also perform sensitivity analysis under different assumptions for vaccine effectiveness, generation time (GT) and model variants; we found that the overall results in predicted patterns were extremely similar, with a slightly better fit obtained with shorter GTs.ConclusionsOur results provide relevant information on the influenza dynamics to fine-tune intervention strategies and for data collection improvement.

Simulated datasets for population dynamics of sickle cell anaemia.

Project description:The datasets contained in this article are simulated data with respect to Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA) in order to examine the mathematical inheritance formation of the SCA disease. The simulation is done using Monte Carlos Simulation (MCS) Technique to complement the Physical Simulation Smith's Statistical (PSSS) package used as random number generator for birth simulation. One hundred and fifty-six (156) births for seven (7) generations were considered in the simulation alongside non-gestating reproductive females with fertile male adults while immigration and emigration are not permitted. These datasets can effectively serve as benchmarks for both health, and marital counselling institutions.

Triadic signatures of global human mobility networks.

Project description:Global refugee and migrant flows form complex networks with serious consequences for both sending and receiving countries as well as those in between. While several basic network properties of these networks have been documented, their finer structural character remains under-studied. One such structure is the triad significance profile (TSP). In this study, the TSPs of global refugee and migrant flow networks are assessed. Results indicate that the migrant flow network's size and TSP remain stable over the years; its TSP shares patterns with social networks such as trade networks. In contrast, the refugee network has been more dynamic and structurally unstable; its TSP shares patterns with networks in the information-processing superfamily, which includes many biological networks. Our findings demonstrate commonality between migrant and social networks as well as between refugee and biological networks, pointing to possible interdisciplinary collaboration-e.g., application of biological network theories to refugee network dynamics-, potentially furthering theoretical development with respect to both network theory and theories on human mobility.

Global multi-layer network of human mobility.

Project description:Recent availability of geo-localized data capturing individual human activity together with the statistical data on international migration opened up unprecedented opportunities for a study on global mobility. In this paper, we consider it from the perspective of a multi-layer complex network, built using a combination of three datasets: Twitter, Flickr and official migration data. Those datasets provide different, but equally important insights on the global mobility - while the first two highlight short-term visits of people from one country to another, the last one - migration - shows the long-term mobility perspective, when people relocate for good. The main purpose of the paper is to emphasize importance of this multi-layer approach capturing both aspects of human mobility at the same time. On the one hand, we show that although the general properties of different layers of the global mobility network are similar, there are important quantitative differences among them. On the other hand, we demonstrate that consideration of mobility from a multi-layer perspective can reveal important global spatial patterns in a way more consistent with those observed in other available relevant sources of international connections, in comparison to the spatial structure inferred from each network layer taken separately.

Global biogeography and quantitative seasonal dynamics of Gemmatimonadetes in soil.

Project description:Bacteria belonging to phylum Gemmatimonadetes comprise approximately 2% of soil bacterial communities. However, little is known of their ecology due to a lack of cultured representation. Here we present evidence from biogeographical analyses and seasonal quantification of Gemmatimonadetes in soils, which suggests an adaptation to low soil moisture.

Household Transmission Dynamics of Seasonal Human Coronaviruses.

Project description:BackgroundHousehold transmission studies inform how viruses spread among close contacts, but few characterize household transmission of endemic coronaviruses.MethodsWe used data collected from 223 households with school-age children participating in weekly disease surveillance over 2 respiratory virus seasons (December 2015 to May 2017), to describe clinical characteristics of endemic human coronaviruses (HCoV-229E, HcoV-HKU1, HcoV-NL63, HcoV-OC43) infections, and community and household transmission probabilities using a chain-binomial model correcting for missing data from untested households.ResultsAmong 947 participants in 223 households, we observed 121 infections during the study, most commonly subtype HCoV-OC43. Higher proportions of infected children (<19 years) displayed influenza-like illness symptoms than infected adults (relative risk, 3.0; 95% credible interval [CrI], 1.5-6.9). The estimated weekly household transmission probability was 9% (95% CrI, 6-13) and weekly community acquisition probability was 7% (95% CrI, 5-10). We found no evidence for differences in community or household transmission probabilities by age or symptom status. Simulations suggest that our study was underpowered to detect such differences.ConclusionsOur study highlights the need for large household studies to inform household transmission, the challenges in estimating household transmission probabilities from asymptomatic individuals, and implications for controlling endemic CoVs.

Global and local mobility as a barometer for COVID-19 dynamics.

Project description:. The spreading of infectious diseases including COVID-19 depends on human interactions. In an environment where behavioral patterns and physical contacts are constantly evolving according to new governmental regulations, measuring these interactions is a major challenge. Mobility has emerged as an indicator for human activity and, implicitly, for human interactions. Here we study the coupling between mobility and COVID-19 dynamics and show that variations in global air traffic and local driving mobility can be used to stratify different disease phases. For ten European countries, our study shows maximal correlation between driving mobility and disease dynamics with a time lag of 14.6 +/- 5.6 days. Our findings suggests that local mobility can serve as a quantitative metric to forecast future reproduction numbers and identify the stages of the pandemic when mobility and reproduction become decorrelated.
