Design and Fabrication of Pneumatically Actuated Valveless Pumps.

ABSTRACT: In this study, a valveless pump was successfully designed and fabricated for the purpose of medium transportation. Different from traditional pumps, the newly designed pump utilizes an actuated or a deflected membrane, and it serves as the function of a check valve at the same time. For achieving the valveless property, an inlet or outlet port positioned in an upper- or lower-layer thin membrane was designed to be connected to an entrance or exit channel. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were conducted simultaneously to investigate the large deformation characteristics of the membranes and to determine the proper location of the inlet or outlet port on the proposed pump. Then, the valveless pump was fabricated on the basis of the proposed design. In the experiment, the maximum flow rate of the proposed pump exceeded 12.47 mL/min at a driving frequency of 5.0 Hz and driving pressure of 68.95 kPa.

Building Valveless Impedance Pumps From Biological Components: Progress and Challenges.

Project description:Valveless pumping based on Liebau mechanism entails asymmetrical positioning of the compression site relative to the attachment sites of the pump's elastic segment to the rest of the circuit. Liebau pumping is believed to play a key role during heart development and be involved in several other physiological processes. Until now studies of Liebau pump have been limited to numerical analyses, in silico modeling, experiments using non-biological elements, and a few indirect in vivo measurements. This review aims to stimulate experimental efforts to build Liebau pumps using biologically compatible materials in order to encourage further exploration of the fundamental mechanisms behind valveless pumping and its role in organ physiology. The covered topics include the biological occurrence of Liebau pumps, the main differences between them and the peristaltic flow, and the potential uses and body sites that can benefit from implantable valveless pumps based on Liebau principle. We then provide an overview of currently available tools to build such pumps and touch upon limitations imposed by the use of biological components. We also talk about the many variables that can impact Liebau pump performance, including the concept of resonant frequencies, the shape of the flowrate-frequency relationship, the flow velocity profiles, and the Womersley numbers. Lastly, the choices of materials to build valveless impedance pumps and possible modifications to increase their flow output are briefly discussed.

Theoretical and Experimental Research on Bubble Actuated Micro-Pumps.

Project description:Bubble actuated micro-pumps have great potential to be integrated into microfluidic systems to allow the independence of peripheral equipment. Previous studies on bubble actuated valveless micro-pumps have been mainly limited to experimental studies and numerical simulations due to the complex behavior of bubbles. In this paper, the construction of a mathematical model for a bubble actuated valveless micro-pump considering fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer and bubble dynamics is described. A prototype was fabricated and tested to verify this theoretical model. The morphological evolution of the driving bubbles during the heating process was observed by a high-speed charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, the flow rate produced by the micro-pump under different working conditions was recorded and the test results were explained by the heat dissipation model. The model in this study was able to precisely predict the flow of micro-pumps in different drive modes. The principle behind defining the heating frequency and the duty cycle based on the pump chamber volume was determined. The study shows the mechanism of bubble controlling and the good prospects of bubble actuated valveless micro-pumps.

Programmable, Pneumatically Actuated Microfluidic Device with an Integrated Nanochannel Array To Track Development of Individual Bacteria.

Project description:We describe a microfluidic device with an integrated nanochannel array to trap individual bacteria and monitor growth and reproduction of lineages over multiple generations. Our poly(dimethylsiloxane) device comprises a pneumatically actuated nanochannel array that includes 1280 channels with widths from 600 to 1000 nm to actively trap diverse bacteria. Integrated pumps and valves perform on-chip fluid and cell manipulations that provide dynamic control of cell loading and nutrient flow, permitting chemostatic growth for extended periods of time (typically 12 to 20 h). Nanochannels confine bacterial growth to a single dimension, facilitating high-resolution, time-lapse imaging and tracking of individual cells. We use the device to monitor the growth of single bacterial cells that undergo symmetric (Bacillus subtilis) and asymmetric (Caulobacter crescentus) division and reconstruct their lineages to correlate growth measurements through time and among related cells. Furthermore, we monitor the motility state of single B. subtilis cells across multiple generations by the expression of a fluorescent reporter protein and observe that the state of the epigenetic switch is correlated over five generations. Our device allows imaging of cellular lineages with high spatiotemporal resolution to facilitate the analysis of biological processes spanning multiple generations.

A new class of magnetically actuated pumps and valves for microfluidic applications.

Project description:We propose a new class of magnetically actuated pumps and valves that could be incorporated into microfluidic chips with no further external connections. The idea is to repurpose ferromagnetic low Reynolds number swimmers as devices capable of generating fluid flow, by restricting the swimmers' translational degrees of freedom. We experimentally investigate the flow structure generated by a pinned swimmer in different scenarios, such as unrestricted flow around it as well as flow generated in straight, cross-shaped, Y-shaped and circular channels. This demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating the device into a channel and its capability of acting as a pump, valve and flow splitter. Different regimes could be selected by tuning the frequency and amplitude of the external magnetic field driving the swimmer, or by changing the channel orientation with respect to the field. This versatility endows the device with varied functionality which, together with the robust remote control and reproducibility, makes it a promising candidate for several applications.

Rapid Fabrication of Low-Cost Thermal Bubble-Driven Micro-Pumps.

Project description:Thermal bubble-driven micro-pumps are an upcoming actuation technology that can be directly integrated into micro/mesofluidic channels to displace fluid without any moving parts. These pumps consist of high power micro-resistors, which we term thermal micro-pump (TMP) resistors, that locally boil fluid at the resistor surface in microseconds creating a vapor bubble to perform mechanical work. Conventional fabrication approaches of thermal bubble-driven micro-pumps and associated microfluidics have utilized semiconductor micro-fabrication techniques requiring expensive tooling with long turn around times on the order of weeks to months. In this study, we present a low-cost approach to rapidly fabricate and test thermal bubble-driven micro-pumps with associated microfluidics utilizing commercial substrates (indium tin oxide, ITO, and fluorine doped tin oxide, FTO, coated glass) and tooling (laser cutter). The presented fabrication approach greatly reduces the turn around time from weeks/months for conventional micro-fabrication to a matter of hours/days allowing acceleration of thermal bubble-driven micro-pump research and development (R&D) learning cycles.

Fabrication of Bilayer Magnetically Actuated L-Shaped Microrobot Based on Chitosan via Photolithography.

Project description:Magnetically actuated microrobots showed increasing potential in various fields, especially in the biomedical area, such as invasive surgery, targeted cargo delivery, and treatment. However, it remains a challenge to incorporate biocompatible natural polymers that are favorable for practical biomedical applications. In this work, bilayer magnetic microrobots with an achiral planar design were fabricated using a biocompatible natural polymer and Fe3O4 nanoparticles through the photolithography by applying the layer-by-layer method. The microrobots consisted of a magnetic bottom layer and a photo-crosslinked chitosan top layer. The SEM results showed that the microrobot processed the L-shaped planar structure with the average width, length, and thickness of 99.18 ± 5.11 μm, 189.56 ± 11.37 μm, and 23.56 ± 4.08 μm, respectively. Moreover, microrobots actuated using a three-dimensional (3D) Helmholtz coil system was characterized and reached up to an average maximum velocity of 325.30 μm/s and a step-out frequency of 14 Hz. Furthermore, the microrobots exhibited excellent cell biocompatibility towards L929 cells in the CCK-8 assay. Therefore, the development of bi-layered chitosan-based microrobots offers a general solution for using magnetic microrobots in biomedical applications by providing an easy-to-fabricate, highly mobile microrobotic platform with the incorporation of biocompatible natural polymers for enhanced biocompatibility.

Physics-aware differentiable design of magnetically actuated kirigami for shape morphing.

Project description:Shape morphing that transforms morphologies in response to stimuli is crucial for future multifunctional systems. While kirigami holds great promise in enhancing shape-morphing, existing designs primarily focus on kinematics and overlook the underlying physics. This study introduces a differentiable inverse design framework that considers the physical interplay between geometry, materials, and stimuli of active kirigami, made by soft material embedded with magnetic particles, to realize target shape-morphing upon magnetic excitation. We achieve this by combining differentiable kinematics and energy models into a constrained optimization, simultaneously designing the cuts and magnetization orientations to ensure kinematic and physical feasibility. Complex kirigami designs are obtained automatically with unparalleled efficiency, which can be remotely controlled to morph into intricate target shapes and even multiple states. The proposed framework can be extended to accommodate various active systems, bridging geometry and physics to push the frontiers in shape-morphing applications, like flexible electronics and minimally invasive surgery.

Computationally Informed Design of a Multi-Axial Actuated Microfluidic Chip Device.

Project description:This paper describes the computationally informed design and experimental validation of a microfluidic chip device with multi-axial stretching capabilities. The device, based on PDMS soft-lithography, consisted of a thin porous membrane, mounted between two fluidic compartments, and tensioned via a set of vacuum-driven actuators. A finite element analysis solver implementing a set of different nonlinear elastic and hyperelastic material models was used to drive the design and optimization of chip geometry and to investigate the resulting deformation patterns under multi-axial loading. Computational results were cross-validated by experimental testing of prototypal devices featuring the in silico optimized geometry. The proposed methodology represents a suite of computationally handy simulation tools that might find application in the design and in silico mechanical characterization of a wide range of stretchable microfluidic devices.

Fabrication-constrained nanophotonic inverse design.

Project description:A major difficulty in applying computational design methods to nanophotonic devices is ensuring that the resulting designs are fabricable. Here, we describe a general inverse design algorithm for nanophotonic devices that directly incorporates fabrication constraints. To demonstrate the capabilities of our method, we designed a spatial-mode demultiplexer, wavelength demultiplexer, and directional coupler. We also designed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband 1 × 3 power splitter on a silicon photonics platform. The splitter has a footprint of only 3.8 × 2.5 μm, and is well within the design rules of a typical silicon photonics process, with a minimum radius of curvature of 100 nm. Averaged over the designed wavelength range of 1400-1700 nm, our splitter has a measured insertion loss of 0.642 ± 0.057 dB and power uniformity of 0.641 ± 0.054 dB.

Design, Analysis, and Evaluation of a Remotely Actuated MRI-Compatible Neurosurgical Robot.

Project description:The paper presents an MRI-compatible neurosurgical robotic system that is designed to operate the head-mounted meso-scale 6-degree-of-freedom (DoF) spring-based MINIR-II. The robotic system consists of an actuation module, a transmission module, and the robot module. The transmission module consist of a switching mechanism for reducing the required number of motors by half, an innovative linkage mechanism to insert and retract the robot with minimal tendon displacement and friction loss, and a quick-connect mechanism for easy attachment of the disposable MINIR-II. Design, analysis, and development of each module are described in detail. Most of the critical components such as the robot, the quick-connect, the linkage mechanism, and various gear-pulley combinations in our design are 3-D printed. Preliminary mechanical properties characterization of the system and the capability of the underactuated system to replicate the critical functions of the 6-DoF robot are presented. The robot motion capability in a brain phantom model and its MRI compatibility in a 7-Tesla magnet were verified.
