Construction of a (NNN)Ru-Incorporated Porous Organic Polymer with High Catalytic Activity for β-Alkylation of Secondary Alcohols with Primary Alcohols.

ABSTRACT: Solid supports functionalized with molecular metal catalysts combine many of the advantages of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. A (NNN)Ru-incorporated porous organic polymer (POP-bp/bbpRuCl3) exhibited high catalytic efficiency and broad functional group tolerance in the C-C cross-coupling of secondary and primary alcohols to give β-alkylated secondary alcohols. This catalyst demonstrated excellent durability during successive recycling without leaching of Ru which is ascribed to the strong binding of the pincer ligands to the metal ions.

Ruthenium Complexes Bearing α-Diimine Ligands and Their Catalytic Applications in N-Alkylation of Amines, α-Alkylation of Ketones, and β-Alkylation of Secondary Alcohols.

Project description:New Ru(II) complexes encompassing α-diimine ligands were synthesized by reacting ruthenium precursors with α-diimine hydrazones. The new ligands and Ru(II) complexes were analyzed by analytical and various spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of L1 and complexes 1, 3, and 4 were determined by single-crystal XRD studies. The results reveal a distorted octahedral geometry around the Ru(II) ion for all complexes. Moreover, the new ruthenium complexes show efficient catalytic activity toward the C-N and C-C coupling reaction involving alcohols. Particularly, complex 3 demonstrates effective conversion in N-alkylation of aromatic amines, α-alkylation of ketones, and β-alkylation of alcohols.

Visible-Light-Driven Catalytic Deracemization of Secondary Alcohols.

Project description:Deracemization of racemic chiral compounds is an attractive approach in asymmetric synthesis, but its development has been hindered by energetic and kinetic challenges. Here we describe a catalytic deracemization method for secondary benzylic alcohols which are important synthetic intermediates and end products for many industries. Driven by visible light only, this method is based on sequential photochemical dehydrogenation followed by enantioselective thermal hydrogenation. The combination of a heterogeneous dehydrogenation photocatalyst and a chiral molecular hydrogenation catalyst is essential to ensure two distinct pathways for the forward and reverse reactions. These reactions convert a large number of racemic aryl alkyl alcohols into their enantiomerically enriched forms in good yields and enantioselectivities.

As a result, a wide range of aromatic primary amines has been selectively alkylated with several primary alcohols, yielding the corresponding secondary amines in high yields. The methodology also enables the methylation of anilines in refluxing methanol and the preparation of a set of heterocycles in a straightforward way.

Lithium-Catalyzed Thiol Alkylation with Tertiary and Secondary Alcohols: Synthesis of 3-Sulfanyl-Oxetanes as Bioisosteres.

Project description:3-Sulfanyl-oxetanes are presented as promising novel bioisosteric replacements for thioesters or benzyl sulfides. From oxetan-3-ols, a mild and inexpensive Li catalyst enables chemoselective C-OH activation and thiol alkylation. Oxetane sulfides are formed from various thiols providing novel motifs in new chemical space and specifically as bioisosteres for thioesters due to their similar shape and electronic properties. Under the same conditions, various π-activated secondary and tertiary alcohols are also successful. Derivatization of the oxetane sulfide linker provides further novel oxetane classes and building blocks. Comparisons of key physicochemical properties of the oxetane compounds to selected carbonyl and methylene analogues indicate that these motifs are suitable for incorporation into drug discovery efforts.

Synthesis, Reactivity, and Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation Activity of Ruthenium Complexes Bearing NNN Tridentate Ligands: Influence of the Secondary Coordination Sphere.

Project description:By the introduction of -OH group(s) into different position(s) of 6-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, several NNN-type ligands were synthesized and then introduced to ruthenium (Ru) centers by reactions with RuCl2(PPh3)3. In the presence of PPh3 or CO, these ruthenium complexes reacted with NH4PF6 in CH2Cl2 or CH3OH to give a series of ionic products 5-9. The reaction of Ru(L2)(PPh3)Cl2 (2) with CO generated a neutral complex [Ru(L2)(CO)Cl2] (10). In the presence of CH3ONa, 10 was further converted into complex [Ru(L2)(HOCH3)(CO)Cl] (11), in which there was a methanol molecule coordinating with ruthenium, as suggested by density functional theory calculations. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation activity of all of these new bifunctional metal-ligand complexes was tested. Dichloride complex 2 exhibits best activity, whereas carbonyl complexes 10 and 11 are efficient for selectively reducing 5-hexen-2-one, suggesting different hydrogenation mechanisms. The results reveal the dramatic influence for the reactivity and catalytic activity of the secondary coordination sphere in transition metal complexes.

Chromium-Catalyzed Alkylation of Amines by Alcohols.

Project description:The alkylation of amines by alcohols is a broadly applicable, sustainable, and selective method for the synthesis of alkyl amines, which are important bulk and fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. We show that Cr complexes can catalyze this C-N bond formation reaction. We synthesized and isolated 35 examples of alkylated amines, including 13 previously undisclosed products, and the use of amino alcohols as alkylating agents was demonstrated. The catalyst tolerates numerous functional groups, including hydrogenation-sensitive examples. Compared to many other alcohol-based amine alkylation methods, where a stoichiometric amount of base is required, our Cr-based catalyst system gives yields higher than 90 % for various alkyl amines with a catalytic amount of base. Our study indicates that Cr complexes can catalyze borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer reactions and could thus be an alternative to Fe, Co, and Mn, or noble metals in (de)hydrogenation catalysis.

Low content Ru-incorporated Pd nanowires for bifunctional electrocatalysis.

Project description:This paper reports the facile synthesis and characterization of carbon supported Pd nanowires with low Ru contents (nRuPd/C). An anti-galvanic replacement reaction involving the reduction of Ru(iii) ions by nanoporous Pd nanowires to form nRuPd alloy nanowires was observed. A series of nRuPd/C materials with various Ru/Pd ratios were prepared by the spontaneous deposition of a Ru cluster on a Pd nanowire core using different Ru precursor concentrations (RuCl3 = 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 mM). The successful formation of low content Ru-incorporated Pd nanowires without individual Ru clusters were confirmed using physicochemical characterization. The electrocatalytic activity of the nRuPd/C for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media was measured by RDE polarization experiments. The electrocatalytic activity varied greatly depending on the Ru content on the Pd nanowires. Among the catalysts, the prepared Pd nanowires incorporated with a very small amount of Ru (ca. 1.4 wt%) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the ORR and HER: positive ORR/HER onset and E 1/2 potentials, higher n value, and lower Tafel slope.
