ABSTRACT: Aims Worldwide applications of extracorporeal circulation for mechanical support in cardiac and circulatory failure, which are referred to as extracorporeal life support (ECLS) or veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (va-ECMO), have dramatically increased over the past decade.
