Nanhuaphasma Chen, He & Li, 2002 is a junior synonym of Dajaca Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 (Phasmatodea, Aschiphasmatidae, Dajacini).

ABSTRACT: The genus Nanhuaphasma Chen, He & Li, 2002 was established as a member of the family Pseudophasmatidae Rehn, 1904 (now belonging to Aschiphasmatidae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893) based on the male of N.hamicercum Chen & He, 2002. We review the status of Nanhuaphasma and N.hamicercum by examining the holotype and male and female non-types which were collected in same location as the holotype. We find that Nanhuaphasma is a junior synonym of Dajaca Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 and N.hamicercum is a junior synonym of D.napolovi Brock, 2000. Complementing egg morphology of D.napolovi and keys to eight species of Dajaca are provided.

Cytochrome b sequence of the Mazama americana jucunda Thomas, 1913 holotype reveals Mazama bororo Duarte, 1996 as its junior synonym.

Project description:The small red brocket deer, Mazama bororo Duarte, 1996 was described based on karyotypical and morphological characters. However, the original description of Mazama americana jucunda suggested that this subspecies could represent the same taxon as Mazama bororo. This assumption was based on the type locality of Mazama americana jucunda and on morphological similarities between Mazama americana jucunda and Mazama bororo. To solve this question, we obtained DNA sequences of the holotype of Mazama americana jucunda and compared it with other species of Mazama, including the holotype of M. bororo. A phylogenetic tree was obtained to verify the relationships among these taxa. The results clearly showed that M. americana jucunda and M. bororo represent the same biological entity. Therefore, the oldest name available for the small red brocket occurring in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil should be Mazama jucunda, remaining M. bororo as a junior synonym. We emphasise the importance of using DNA from museum specimens, especially from holotypes, in order to obtain a more accurate taxonomic identification. We also highlight the importance of application of valid names for labelling all aspects of biodiversity research, as well as for monitoring and conservation efforts.

Triatoma guazu Lent and Wygodzinsky Is a Junior Synonym of Triatoma williami Galvao, Souza and Lima.

Project description:Triatoma guazu Lent and Wygodzinsky and Triatoma williami Galvão, Souza, and Lima (Hemiptera: Triatominae) are found in human dwellings and are potential vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Triatoma guazu was described based solely on a single female specimen, from the municipality of Villarica, Guairá Department, Paraguay, and posteriorly, a male from Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso, Brazil was described and designated as the allotype of this species. Triatoma williami is found in the central-west of Brazil between Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul. However, the taxonomic "status" of these species is questioned. Previous studies indicate the lack of isoenzymatic diagnostic loci, morphometric similarity, low genetic divergence, and close evolutionary relationship of these species. In this study, we compared the morphology, morphometry, and mitochondrial DNA fragments of the populations of the two species. The morphological diagnostic characteristic among these species is the difference in the connexivum spots pattern, which has been recognized as a phenotypic variation that exists among populations resulting from ecological diversity. Furthermore, our analysis also revealed the morphometric similarity and low genetic divergence between these species. Therefore, in the present paper, we formally propose T. guazu as a junior synonym of T. williami.

Cytogenetic and genetic data support Crossodactylus aeneus Muller, 1924 as a new junior synonym of C. gaudichaudii Dumeril and Bibron, 1841 (Amphibia, Anura).

Project description:The nominal anuran species Crossodactylus gaudichaudii Duméril and Bibron, 1841 and Crossodactylus aeneus Müller, 1924 are indistinguishable based on adult and larval morphology, being subject of taxonomic doubts. Here, we describe the karyotypes of C. gaudichaudii and C. aeneus, using classical and molecular cytogenetic markers. In addition, we used sequences of the H1 mitochondrial DNA to infer their phylogenetic relationships by Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Maximum Parsimony (MP) approaches and species delimitation test (by bPTP approach). The karyotypic data do not differentiate C. gaudichaudii and C. aeneus in any of the chromosome markers assessed. In both phylogenetic analyses, C. gaudichaudii and C. aeneus were recovered into a strongly supported clade. The species delimitation analysis recovered the specimens assigned to C. gaudichaudii and C. aeneus as a single taxonomic unit. Taken the cytogenetic and genetic results together with previous studies of internal and external morphology of tadpoles and biacoustic pattern, C. gaudichaudii and C. aeneus could not be differentiated, which supports the hypothesis that they correspond to the same taxonomic unit, with C. aeneus being a junior synonym of C. gaudichaudii.

Complete chloroplast genome of Tricyrtis xianjuensis Li, Chen & Ma 2014 (Liliaceae): a species endemic to Zhejiang province, China.

Project description:Tricyrtis xianjuensis Li, Chen & Ma 2014 is a rare and endangered species endemic to Zhejiang province, with fewer than 200 individuals in the wild. In our present study, the complete chloroplast genome of T. xianjuensis was assembled by using high-throughput sequencing data, and its genomic features were described and comparative genomic analyses within Liliaceae family were performed. The complete chloroplast genome of T. xianjuensis was 155,748 bp in length, exhibiting a GC content of 37.3%. This genome structure contained two inverted repeats (IRs), as well as a small single-copy (SSC) and a large single-copy (LSC) region. The IR region measured 26,371 bp, while the SSC and LSC regions were 17,729 bp and 85,277 bp in length, respectively. A total of 137 genes were identified, including 85 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, eight rRNA genes, and six pseudogenes. Phylogenic analysis revealed T. xianjuensis shared a clade with T. formosana Baker 1879 and T. macropoda Miq. 1867, with a support rate of 100%. The assembly and analysis of T. xianjuensis chloroplast genome provided an insight into further studies on the conservation genetics of this endangered species.

Systematics of the new genus Spinosuncus Chen, Zhang & Li with descriptions of four new species (Lepidoptera, Crambidae, Pyraustinae).

Project description:The new genus Spinosuncus gen. n. is proposed for three known species, S.contractalis (Warren, 1896), comb. n., S.praepandalis (Snellen, 1890), comb. n., and S.aureolalis (Lederer, 1863), comb. n. and four new species, S.rectacutus sp. n., S.brevacutus sp. n., S.curvisetaceus sp. n., and S.quadracutus sp. n. from the Oriental Region. An identification key is provided for all species. The habiti and genitalia of all species are figured. The monophyly of the genus is well supported by a phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data of the COI, 16S rRNA, and EF-1α genes. The potential sister groups of the new genus, the interspecific relationships and some intraspecific variations within the genus are discussed.

A proposal of Bursaphelenchus uncispicularis Zhuo, Li, Li, Yu & Liao, 2007 as a junior synonyms of B. yongensis Gu, Braasch, Burgermeister, Brandstetter & Zhang, 2006.

Project description:Bursaphelenchus yongensis was first reported in China, and later found in Japan and Korea. It is characterized by a relatively slim body (a = 42 and 57 for females and males, respectively). The excretory pore is located at level of median bulb, the lateral field has three lines, and a small vulval flap is present. A long post-uterine branch extends 2/3 to 3/4 of the vulva to anus distance. The conoid female tail has a 2-5 µm long mucron in the central position at the terminus. Spicules are small, condylus high and strongly dorsally bent. Subsequently Bursaphelenchus uncispicularis was described from China. Both morphological characters and morphometrics are very similar to B. yongensis, except for the number of lateral lines (4 vs 3) and male caudal papillae (7 vs 4). Re-examination of type material and a Beijing population of B. yongensis determined that B. yongensis has 7 caudal papillae instead of 4 as originally reported. It is possible that the poor condition of the type specimens of B. uncispicularis could have created difficulty in the determination of lateral line number. Unfortunately, type material of B. uncispicularis has been lost. Therefore, there is no evidence that B. uncispicularis exists. It is now established that B. yongensis is present in China, Japan and Korea with a common host species (P. thunbergii) and a common widespread vector (Cryphalus fulvus). Therefore, based on the geographic, ecological, molecular, and morphological data, we propose Bursaphelenchus uncispicularis Zhuo, Li, Li, Yu & Liao, 2007 as a junior synonym of B. yongensis Gu, Braasch, Burgermeister, Brandstetter & Zhang, 2006.

The complete mitochondrial genome and phylogenetic analysis of Anabarilius duoyiheensis Li, Mao & Lu, 2002 (Cypriniformes: Xenocyprididae).

Project description:Anabarilius duoyiheensis is a native and rare fish in Yunnan. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of A. duoyiheensis was sequenced and published for a total of 16,614 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and one control region. The phylogenetic analysis based on the complete mitochondrial genome showed that A. duoyiheensis belongs to the clade of the genus Anabarilius and was sister to the clade of Hemiculter. This study also contributes to the genus phylogeny of Anabarilius and other members of the family Xenocyprididae.
