Design Judgments in the Creation of eLearning Modules.

ABSTRACT: As eLearning becomes an increasingly common strategy to minimize instructional disruptions caused by illness, weather, professional development, and other planned and unplanned events, teachers need to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to design and facilitate these non-traditional learning experiences. Informed by survey and interview data, we developed three learning modules designed to assist PK-12 teachers in preparing, planning, and facilitating eLearning experiences. In describing this design process, we focus this case on design judgments, described here as the deliberate and unconscious thinking processes experienced by designers in the design and development of learning experiences. Through this experience, we found that design judgments occur constantly throughout the design process and manifest themselves in non-linear and sometimes unpredictable ways. With this focus on design judgments, we aim to provide a view of instructional design that can sensitize designers to the complexities of authentic design experience.

Project description:BackgroundAs an overrepresented population on the transplant waitlist, stagnated rates of organ donation registration among Latinxs must be redressed. Promotoras (community health workers), who are effective at advocating and spearheading health promotion efforts in the Latinx community, show promise in their ability to educate about organ donation and donor registration.ObjectiveThis study aimed (1) to develop an interactive, evidence-based program to educate promotoras about organ donation, the need for organ donors in the Latinx American community, and ways to register as deceased organ donors and (2) to train promotoras to lead discussions about organ donation and to promote the act of donor registration.MethodsIn partnership with 4 promotoras organizations, the culturally targeted Promotoras de Donación eLearning module was developed based on input from 12 focus groups conducted with Latina women (n=61) and promotoras (n=37). Formative work, existing literature, the Vested Interest Theory, and the Organ Donation Model guided curriculum development. In partnership with the Gift of Life Institute and regional promotoras, the curriculum was designed, filmed, and developed in a visually appealing module interface. The module was beta-tested with promotoras before launch.ResultsPromotoras de Donación, available in Spanish with English subtitling, lasts just over an hour. The module comprised 6 sections including various activities and videos, with the curriculum divided into a skills-based communication component and a didactic educational component. Pre- and posttests assessed the module's direct effects on promotoras' organ donation knowledge and attitudes as well as confidence promoting the act of donor registration.ConclusionsThis novel, theoretically and empirically based intervention leveraged the existing network of promotoras to promote the act of donor registration. Project description:BackgroundGlobal demand for capacity building has increased interest for eLearning. As eLearning resources become more common, effective implementation is required to scale up utilization in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).ObjectiveThis paper describes the process of implementing a malnutrition eLearning course, effectiveness of course delivery models devised, factors affecting course completion, and cost comparison between the models and face-to-face training at healthcare and academic institutions in Ghana.MethodsFour delivery models: Mobile Training Centre (MTC), Online Delivery (OD), Institutional Computer Workstation (ICW) and Mixed Delivery (MD) - a combination of OD and ICW - were determined. Participants were enabled to access the course using one of the four models where contextually appropriate. Pre and post-assessments and questionnaires were administered to compare participants' course completion status and knowledge gain between delivery models. The effect of access to computer and Internet at home and relevance of course to job and academic progression on course completion were further investigated. Comparison of delivery model costs against face-to-face training was also undertaken.ResultsOf 7 academic and 9 healthcare institutions involving 915 people, 9 used MTC (34.8%), 3 OD (18.8%), 3 ICW (34.2%) and 1 MD (12.2%). Course completion was higher among institutions where the course was relevant to job or implemented as part of required curriculum activities. Knowledge gain was significant among most participants, but higher among those who found the course relevant to job or academic progression. The implementation costs per participant for training with MTC were £51.0, OD £2.2, ICW £1.2 and MD £1.1, compared with a face-to-face training estimate of £105.0 (1 GHS = 0.14 GBP).ConclusionThe malnutrition eLearning course makes global capacity building in malnutrition management achievable. Adopting contextually appropriate delivery models and ensuring training is relevant to job/academic progression can enhance eLearning effectiveness in LMICs.
