Vertebrates evolved mechanisms for sodium conservation and gas exchange in conjunction with migration from aquatic to terrestrial habitats. Epithelial Na<sup>+</sup> channel (ENaC) function is critical to systems responsible for extracellular fluid homeostasis and gas exchange.
