Corynoneura Winnertz species from Hunan Province, Oriental China, delineated with morphological and 16S rDNA data (Diptera, Chironomidae).

ABSTRACT: The genus Corynoneura Winnertz, 1846 from Hunan Province in Oriental China is reviewed. Four new species, C.enormis Fu sp. nov., C.gibbera Fu sp. nov., C.incuria Fu sp. nov., and C.longshanensis Fu sp. nov. are described and illustrated based on adult males. Sequence data from the 16S rDNA gene were used to infer relationships between these species and complement morphological delineation. Sequences from the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (16S rDNA) from these species are uploaded to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Relationships were inferred using the Neighbor-Joining method based on 16S rDNA.

Project description:Two new species, Macropelopia (Macropelopia) excavata Xu & Fu, sp. nov. and Macropelopia (Macropelopia) quadrimacula Xu & Fu, sp. nov., are described as male adults. A key to identify the males of Macropelopia from China is provided. Furthermore, in order to ascertain the genetic distance between these species and their morphological characteristics, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences were uploaded to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. These COI sequences were then utilized to infer the relationships between the species, employing the neighbor-joining method.

Morphology lies: a case-in-point with a new non-biting midge species from Oriental China (Diptera, Chironomidae).

Project description:Morphological traits are generally indicative of specific taxa, and particularly function as keys in taxonomy and species delimitation. In this study, a non-biting midge species with an Einfeldia-like superior volsella makes it hard to accurately determined based on its morphological characteristics. Molecular genes of two ribosomal genes and three protein-encoding genes were compiled to construct a related genera phylogeny and to address the taxonomic issues. Phylogenetic inference clearly supports the undetermined species as belonging to Kiefferulus. Therefore, a new species classified in the genus Kiefferulus is described and figured as an adult male from Oriental China. The species could be easily distinguished from other species in having an Einfeldia-like superior volsella and a triangular tergite IX.

First complete mitogenome of Axarus fungorum (Albu, 1980) from Guizhou Province, China (Diptera, Chironomidae).

Project description:Axarus fungorum (Albu, 1980) exhibits certain adaptations to different aquatic environments, appearing as an important evaluation element for freshwater quality monitoring. In this study, complete mitogenome of A. fungorum was provided for the first time to define the systematic and phylogenetic history of this taxon. The whole mitogenome is 15,696 bp long with high A + T content that consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and a noncoding control region. ML analysis showed support for monophyly of Chironominae and close relationship between A. fungorum and Chironomus generic genera.

Parachironomus lenz from china and Japan (Diptera, chironomidae).

Project description:Members of the genus Parachironomus Lenz known from China and Japan are revised, and a key to their male adults is given. Parachironomuspoyangensis sp. n. is described in this life stage. Parachironomusfrequens (Johannsen) and Parachironomusmonochromus (van der Wulp) are recorded from China for the first time, thus are redescribed from Chinese specimens. Parachironomuskamaabeus Sasa & Tanaka and Parachironomustoneabeus Sasa & Tanaka are new junior synonyms of Parachironomusfrequens. Three Chinese or Japanese species formerly placed in Parachironomus are transferred to other genera, resulting in the new combinations Cryptochironomusinafegeus (Sasa, Kitami & Suzuki), Demicryptochironomus (Irmakia) lobus (Yan, Sæther, Jin & Wang), and Microchironomuslacteipennis (Kieffer). Chironomussauteri Kieffer, Parachironomuskisobilobalis Sasa & Kondo and Parachironomuskuramaexpandus Sasa are removed from Parachironomus; the last of these three denotes a valid species of uncertain generic placement, the first two are nomina dubia.

Two new species, Dicrotendipes nudussp. n. and Dicrotendipes saetanumerosussp. n. are described and the male imagines are illustrated; the record of Dicrotendipes fusconotatus (Kieffer) is the first for China. First report of the complete mitogenome of Tanypus punctipennis Meigen, 1818 (Diptera, Chironomidae) from Hebei Province, China.

Project description:Tanypus punctipennis Meigen, 1818 is an important bioindicator for freshwater ecosystems monitoring. Although COI barcode analyses have been performed on T. punctipennis, the mitogenome of this taxon has not been assembled and analyzed. Here, the complete mitogenome of T. punctipennis was sequenced and analyzed to confirm the systematic and phylogenetic history of this species. The mitogenome is 16,215 bp long with high A + T content, and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and a noncoding control region. The phylogenomic analysis supports monophyletic Tanypodinae and close relationship between T. punctipennis and Clinotanypus. Our results indicate that mitogenomes showed strong signals in phylogenetic reconstructions at the genus level of Tanypodinae.
