Topography of the Dolomites modulates range dynamics of narrow endemic plants under climate change.

ABSTRACT: Climate change is expected to threaten endemic plants in the Alps. In this context, the factors that may modulate species responses are rarely investigated at a local scale. We analyzed eight alpine narrow endemics of the Dolomites (southeastern Alps) under different predicted climate change scenarios at fine spatial resolutions. We tested possible differences in elevation, topographic heterogeneity and velocity of climate change among areas of gained, lost, or stable climatic habitat. The negative impact of climate change ranged from moderate to severe, depending on scenario and species. Generally, range loss occurred at the lowest elevations, while gained and stable areas were located at highest elevations. For six of the species, climate change velocity had higher values in stable and gained areas than in lost ones. Our findings support the role of topographic heterogeneity in maintaining climatic microrefugia, however, the peculiar topography of the Dolomites, characterized by high altitude plateaus, resulted in high climate change velocity in areas of projected future climatic suitability. Our study supports the usefulness of multiple predictors of spatio-temporal range dynamics for regional climate-adapted management and eventual assisted colonization planning to not overlook or overestimate the potential impact of climate change locally.

Project description:Psilopeganum sinense is a perennial herb endemic to the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) of the Yangtze River and its surrounding regions. This species is crucial for ecological conservation and regional socioeconomic development. Recent extreme weather events in the TGRA have directly and indirectly caused local losses of numerous wild populations of P. sinense. Given the severe survival crisis induced by climate change, it is essential to explore the effects of climate change on the potential distribution of P. sinense. Although there is a general awareness of the adverse effects of climate change on various species, there is a lack of comprehensive studies focusing on the long-term effects and detailed climatic variables influencing the distribution of P. sinense. In this study, we aimed to use the random forest (RF) algorithm to analyze the redistribution of P. sinense across several critical climatic periods. The results indicated that the main variables limiting the present geographical distribution of P. sinense were precipitation seasonality and the mean diurnal range. Currently, P. sinense is mainly distributed in the riparian zone of the TGRA and its surrounding areas, exhibiting a relatively narrow climatic niche and habitat fragmentation pattern. Historically, distributions under past climatic conditions were relatively intact and more extensive than the current distribution area. During the last interglacial period, a broad distribution of highly suitable areas was observed in eastern Sichuan Province, northern Chongqing, and central Hubei Province, exhibiting a continuous distribution pattern. Future climate scenarios indicated a projected 32.84% decrease in suitable areas under RCP4.5-2050s. In northern Chongqing, the ecological corridors established in highly suitable habitats would fragment and gradually separate. Some previously unsuitable areas for P. sinense could transform into potentially suitable habitats because of climate change; however, these suitable areas might exhibit fragmented and discrete distribution patterns. In general, both the shrinkage of suitable habitats and habitat fragmentation would compress the already limited survival space of P. sinense, leading some populations to prematurely confront critical survival decisions under severe climate pressures. Our results not only provide a scientific basis for managing P. sinense resources in the context of climate change but also serve as an important reference for restoring wild P. sinense populations.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Understanding the underlying processes shaping spatial patterns of genetic structure in free-ranging organisms is a central topic in evolutionary biology. Here, we aim to disentangle the relative importance of neutral (i.e. genetic drift) and local adaptation (i.e. ecological divergence) processes in the evolution of spatial genetic structure of the Morales grasshopper (Chorthippus saulcyi moralesi), a narrow-endemic taxon restricted to the Central Pyrenees. More specifically, we analysed range-wide patterns of genetic structure and tested whether they were shaped by geography (isolation-by-distance, IBD), topographic complexity and present and past habitat suitability models (isolation-by-resistance, IBR), and environmental dissimilarity (isolation-by-environment, IBE). RESULTS:Different clustering analyses revealed a deep genetic structure that was best explained by IBR based on topographic complexity. Our analyses did not reveal a significant role of IBE, a fact that may be due to low environmental variation among populations and/or consequence of other ecological factors not considered in this study are involved in local adaptation processes. IBR scenarios informed by current and past climate distribution models did not show either a significant impact on genetic differentiation after controlling for the effects of topographic complexity, which may indicate that they are not capturing well microhabitat structure in the present or the genetic signal left by dispersal routes defined by habitat corridors in the past. CONCLUSIONS:Overall, these results indicate that spatial patterns of genetic variation in our study system are primarily explained by neutral divergence and migration-drift equilibrium due to limited dispersal across abrupt reliefs, whereas environmental variation or spatial heterogeneity in habitat suitability associated with the complex topography of the region had no significant effect on genetic discontinuities after controlling for geography. Our study highlights the importance of considering a comprehensive suite of potential isolating mechanisms and analytical approaches in order to get robust inferences on the processes promoting genetic divergence of natural populations.

Project description:Populations at the margins of a species' geographic range are often thought to be poorly adapted to their environment. According to theoretical predictions, gene flow can inhibit these range edge populations if it disrupts adaptation to local conditions. Alternatively, if range edge populations are small or isolated, gene flow can provide beneficial genetic variation and may facilitate adaptation to environmental change. We tested these competing predictions in the annual wildflower Clarkia pulchella using greenhouse crosses to simulate gene flow from sources across the geographic range into two populations at the northern range margin. We planted these between-population hybrids in common gardens at the range edge and evaluated how genetic differentiation and climatic differences between edge populations and gene flow sources affected lifetime fitness. During an anomalously warm study year, gene flow from populations occupying historically warm sites improved fitness at the range edge and plants with one or both parents from warm populations performed best. The effects of the temperature provenance of gene flow sources were most apparent at early life history stages, but precipitation provenance also affected reproduction. We also found benefits of gene flow that were independent of climate: after climate was controlled for, plants with parents from different populations performed better at later lifestages than those with parents from the same population, indicating that gene flow may improve fitness via relieving homozygosity. Further supporting this result, we found that increasing genetic differentiation of parental populations had positive effects on fitness of hybrid seeds. Gene flow from warmer populations, when it occurs, is likely to contribute adaptive genetic variation to populations at the northern range edge as the climate warms. On heterogeneous landscapes, climate of origin may be a better predictor of gene flow effects than geographic proximity.
