Meotipa species (Araneae, Theridiidae) from China.

ABSTRACT: In an ongoing effort to expand knowledge of the Chinese cobweb spider fauna (Theridiidae), the genus Meotipa Simon, 1894 is reviewed. Two new species are described, Meotipapseudopicturata sp. nov., Meotipastriata sp. nov., and five known species are redescribed: Meotipaargyrodiformis (Yaginuma, 1952), Meotipapulcherrima (Mello-Leitão, 1917), Meotipapicturata Simon, 1895, Meotipaspiniventris (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1869), and Meotipavesiculosa Simon, 1895.

Project description:Eight cobweb spider species building a detritus-based, bell-shaped retreat from China are reported in the current paper, including five new Campanicola species and three known species: Campanicolaanguilliformis Li & Liu, sp. nov., Campanicolafalciformis Li & Liu, sp. nov., Campanicolaheteroidea Li & Liu, sp. nov., Campanicolatauricornis Li & Liu, sp. nov., Campanicolavolubilis Li & Liu, sp. nov., Campanicolacampanulata (Chen, 1993), Campanicolaferrumequina (Bösenberg & Strand, 1906), and Parasteatodaducta (Zhu, 1998). Among them, the male of Parasteatodaducta (Zhu, 1998) is described for the first time. We provide photographs of all species and descriptions for new species in the current paper. The type of bell-shaped retreat is rare in theridiid, and found only in four related genera. A natural next step upon completing this taxonomic study would be to analyse and understand the evolution of the retreat and related traits.

Description and phylogenetic analysis of two new Episinus (Araneae, Theridiidae) species from China.

Project description:The spider genus Episinus Walckenaer, 1809 currently contains 66 species worldwide, mostly in warm temperate to tropical areas. This paper describes two new Chinese Episinus species: E.ornithorrhynchus sp. nov. (♂♀) and E.papilionaceous sp. nov. (♀). We add these two new and one known Episinus species to the phylogenetic data matrix of Liu et al. 2016 and reanalyze the data. The new phylogeny recovers the monophyly of Episinus and supports its division into two groups, a finding also supported by morphology.

Project description:BackgroundCurrently, the genus Episinus Walckenaer, 1809 includes 64 described species mainly being distributed in Asia, Africa and the Americas, with 16 described species in China. During the recent surveys across various regions of China, we found three previously undescribed species which have been identified as belonging to Episinus.New informationThree new species of Episinus Walckenaer, 1809 are described: Episinusanfu sp. nov. (♀) from Jiangxi Province, E.implicatus sp. nov. (♀) from Yunnan Province and E.pseudonubilus sp. nov. (♂♀) from Shaanxi Province. Based on morphological characteristics and previous studies, we further propose five species groups to accommodate the Chinese Episinus, including two species groups proposed by Liu et al. (2022). Detailed descriptions, photographs, hand drawings, DNA barcodes and a distribution map of the three new species are provided.

Taxonomic notes on the genus Yunohamella Yoshida, 2007 (Araneae, Theridiidae) from China, with two new species.

Project description:Four Yunohamella species are reported from Hubei Province, China, including two new species: Y.gutenbergi R. Zhong, J. Liu & Hu, sp. nov. (♂) and Y.mohorovicici R. Zhong, J. Liu & Hu, sp. nov. (♂). Yunohamellajiugongensis (Liu & Zhong, 2023), comb. nov. is transferred from the genus Cryptachaea Archer, 1946, and Y.lyrica (Walckenaer, 1841) is newly recorded from Hubei Province and is considered as a senior synonym of Platnickinamneon (Bösenberg & Strand, 1906).

New species of smiley-faced spider Spintharus (Araneae, Theridiidae) from Brazil, and comments on unobserved diversity in South America.

Project description:Spintharus is a genus of spiders that contained only two species until 2018 when it was demonstrated that a 'widespread' species was instead composed of multiple short-range endemics. This note redescribes Spintharus gracilis Keyserling and describes a new species of Spintharus (Araneae, Theridiidae), S. leverger sp. nov., both based on specimens from Brazil. We also examine specimens from several additional localities in Brazil displaying variation consistent with patterns previously found within the Caribbean: geographically isolated and unique localities may contain independent species lineages. Given the limited number of specimens, profuse variation, and lack of DNA data from museum specimens, it is challenging to gauge the number of species in the observed material. Instead of describing these as new species here, we highlight this variation and hypothesize that in South America, a greater diversity of the genus across the geographical landscape will be found than predicted based on Levi's "widespread Spintharus flavidus" hypothesis. Our results suggest that continental efforts to sample the genus would be profitable, as this charismatic group likely harbors unappreciated diversity throughout the continent.

Chromosome mapping of dragline silk genes in the genomes of widow spiders (Araneae, Theridiidae).

Project description:With its incredible strength and toughness, spider dragline silk is widely lauded for its impressive material properties. Dragline silk is composed of two structural proteins, MaSp1 and MaSp2, which are encoded by members of the spidroin gene family. While previous studies have characterized the genes that encode the constituent proteins of spider silks, nothing is known about the physical location of these genes. We determined karyotypes and sex chromosome organization for the widow spiders, Latrodectus hesperus and L. geometricus (Araneae, Theridiidae). We then used fluorescence in situ hybridization to map the genomic locations of the genes for the silk proteins that compose the remarkable spider dragline. These genes included three loci for the MaSp1 protein and the single locus for the MaSp2 protein. In addition, we mapped a MaSp1 pseudogene. All the MaSp1 gene copies and pseudogene localized to a single chromosomal region while MaSp2 was located on a different chromosome of L. hesperus. Using probes derived from L. hesperus, we comparatively mapped all three MaSp1 loci to a single region of a L. geometricus chromosome. As with L. hesperus, MaSp2 was found on a separate L. geometricus chromosome, thus again unlinked to the MaSp1 loci. These results indicate orthology of the corresponding chromosomal regions in the two widow genomes. Moreover, the occurrence of multiple MaSp1 loci in a conserved gene cluster across species suggests that MaSp1 proliferated by tandem duplication in a common ancestor of L. geometricus and L. hesperus. Unequal crossover events during recombination could have given rise to the gene copies and could also maintain sequence similarity among gene copies over time. Further comparative mapping with taxa of increasing divergence from Latrodectus will pinpoint when the MaSp1 duplication events occurred and the phylogenetic distribution of silk gene linkage patterns.

A new monotypic genus of cobweb spiders from the Russian Far East (Araneae, Theridiidae).

Project description:A new theridiid spider, Knoflachiakurilensisgen. et sp. nov., is described from the Kuril Islands (Kunashir). The new genus belongs to the 'Anelosimus clade (clade 24)' of Agnarsson (2004). A pair of raised, fused setal sockets on the cheliceral promargin adjacent to the fang base was found to be another synapomorphy of all the 'distal theridiids' (the 'elongated central claw clade (clade 33)': argyrodins, 'Anelosimus clade' and theridiins). Knoflachiakurilensissp. nov. demonstrates a male polymorphism similar to some Anelosimus Simon, 1891 species (e.g., A.studiosus (Hentz, 1850)).
