Programmable wavelength filter with double ring loaded MZI.

ABSTRACT: We propose a novel filter circuit that incorporates a double ring resonator with a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The circuit has a response equivalent to a conventional ring loaded MZI filter, but with added flexibility in terms of configurability. The second-order filter can also be cascaded to realize higher-order filters. The circuit incorporates a two-stage input and output coupler to further reduce the effect of dispersion. A combination of local and global optimization strategies to program the filter, using tailored objective functions, have been tested in simulation and experiments. To our best knowledge, this is the first time a global optimization strategy is directly used in ARMA filter synthesis and simulation without any additional requirement. We further extend the optimization strategy into experiments and demonstrated its use in practical case for programmable filter circuits.

All-fiber wavelength swept ring laser based on Fabry-Perot filter for optical frequency domain imaging.

Project description:Innovations in laser engineering have yielded several novel configurations for high repetition rate, broad sweep range, and long coherence length wavelength swept lasers. Although these lasers have enabled high performance frequency-domain optical coherence tomography, they are typically complicated and costly and many require access to proprietary materials or devices. Here, we demonstrate a simplified ring resonator configuration that is straightforward to construct from readily available materials at a low total cost. It was enabled by an insight regarding the significance of isolation against bidirectional operation and by configuring the sweep range of the intracavity filter to exceed its free spectral range. The design can easily be optimized to meet a range of operating specifications while yielding robust and stable performance. As an example, we demonstrate 240 kHz operation with 125 nm sweep range and >70 mW of average output power and demonstrate high quality frequency domain OCT imaging. Programmable light-driven swimming actuators via wavelength signal switching.

Project description:Light-driven swimming actuators with different motion modes could lead to many previously unachievable applications. However, controllable navigation often requires focusing light precisely on certain positions of the actuator, which is unfavorable for accurate dynamical operation or in microscale applications. Here, we present a type of programmable swimming actuators that can execute wavelength-dependent multidirectional motions via the Marangoni effect. Several multi–degree of freedom swimming motions have been realized: Forward-and-backward and zigzag actuators can execute one-dimensional (1D) and 2D linear motion, respectively; bidirectional gear rotation as angular motion can be regulated to obtain tunable speeds; and the turning actuator as a “freighter” is able to turn left, right, and go straight for precise maze navigation. A mechanical measurement system is established to quantitatively measure the driving force of the motion directly. The accessible wavelength-selective strategy presented here can inspire further explorations of simple and practical light-driven materials and systems.

Untethered wavelength-selective multi-shape programmable hybrid soft robot.

Project description:Untethered stimuli-responsive soft robotics is a promising field with potential applications in healthcare, automation, and human-robot interaction. However, current limitations restrict many soft robots to binary shape actuation, limiting their functionality to a single mechanical task. In this study, we introduce an untethered wavelength-selective multi-shape programmable soft robot using silicone/hydrogel materials. By leveraging metal nanoparticle-embedded silicone elastomer, our robot achieves reversible shape transformations in response to specific light wavelengths. We also engineered multiple distinct stiffness in key components like hinges and panels, enabling origami-like folding actuation. Our fabricated robot demonstrates four distinct shape morphologies controlled by two light wavelengths. This innovative combination of materials and selective actuation mechanism lays a strong foundation for advanced soft robotic systems capable of diverse mechanical tasks.

1.1-µm Band Extended Wide-Bandwidth Wavelength-Swept Laser Based on Polygonal Scanning Wavelength Filter.

Project description:We demonstrated a 1.1-µm band extended wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) that combined two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) based on a polygonal scanning wavelength filter. The center wavelengths of the two SOAs were 1020 nm and 1140 nm, respectively. Two SOAs were connected in parallel in the form of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. At a scanning speed of 1.8 kHz, the 10-dB bandwidth of the spectral output and the average power were approximately 228 nm and 16.88 mW, respectively. Owing to the nonlinear effect of the SOA, a decrease was observed in the bandwidth according to the scanning speed. Moreover, the intensity of the WSL decreased because the oscillation time was smaller than the buildup time. In addition, a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cell was fabricated as an application of WSL, and the dynamic change of the first-order reflection of the CLC cell in the 1-µm band was observed using the WSL. The pitch jumps of the reflection band occurred according to the electric field applied to the CLC cell, and instantaneous changes were observed.

Ion and inhibitor binding of the double-ring ion selectivity filter of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter.

Project description:The calcium (Ca2+) uniporter of mitochondria is a holocomplex consisting of the Ca2+-conducting channel, known as mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU), and several accessory and regulatory components. A previous electrophysiology study found that the uniporter has high Ca2+ selectivity and conductance and this depends critically on the conserved amino acid sequence motif, DXXE (Asp-X-X-Glu) of MCU. A recent NMR structure of the MCU channel from Caenorhabditis elegans revealed that the DXXE forms two parallel carboxylate rings at the channel entrance that seem to serve as the ion selectivity filter, although direct ion interaction of this structural motif has not been addressed. Here, we use a paramagnetic probe, manganese (Mn2+), to investigate ion and inhibitor binding of this putative selectivity filter. Our paramagnetic NMR data show that mutants with a single carboxylate ring, NXXE (Asn-X-X-Glu) and DXXQ (Asp-X-X-Gln), each can bind Mn2+ specifically, whereas in the WT the two rings bind Mn2+ cooperatively, resulting in ∼1,000-fold higher apparent affinity. Ca2+ can specifically displace the bound Mn2+ at the DXXE site in the channel. Furthermore, titrating the sample with the known channel inhibitor ruthenium 360 (Ru360) can displace Mn2+ binding from the solvent-accessible Asp site but not the inner Glu site. The NMR titration data, together with structural analysis of the DXXE motif and molecular dynamics simulation, indicate that the double carboxylate rings at the apex of the MCU pore constitute the ion selectivity filter and that Ru360 directly blocks ion entry into the filter by binding to the outer carboxylate ring.

Ultra sub-wavelength surface plasmon confinement using air-gap, sub-wavelength ring resonator arrays.

Project description:Arrays of sub-wavelength, sub-10 nm air-gap plasmonic ring resonators are fabricated using nanoimprinting. In near infra-red (NIR) range, the resonator supports a single dipole mode which is excited and identified via simple normal illumination and explored through transmission measurements. By controlling both lateral and vertical confinement via a metal edge, the mode volume is successfully reduced down to 1.3 × 10(-5) λ0(3). The advantage of such mode confinement is demonstrated by applying the resonators biosensing. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules, a dramatic enhancement of surface sensitivity up to 69 nm/nm is achieved as the modal height approaches the thickness of the adsorbed molecule layers.

Hybrid optical fiber add-drop filter based on wavelength dependent light coupling between micro/nano fiber ring and side-polished fiber.

Project description:In this paper, we report our experimental study on directly coupling a micro/nano fiber (MNOF) ring with a side-polished fiber(SPF). As a result of the study, the behavior of an add-drop filter was observed. The demonstrated add-drop filter explored the wavelength dependence of light coupling between a MNOF ring and a SPF. The characteristics of the filter and its performance dependence on the MNOF ring diameter were investigated experimentally. The investigation resulted in an empirically obtained ring diameter that showed relatively good filter performance. Since light coupling between a (MNOF) and a conventional single mode fiber has remained a challenge in the photonic integration community, the present study may provide an alternative way to couple light between a MNOF device and a conventional single mode fiber based device or system. The hybridization approach that uses a SPF as a platform to integrate a MNOF device may enable the realization of other all-fiber optical hybrid devices.

Reconfigurable ring filter with controllable frequency response.

Project description:Reconfigurable ring filter based on single-side-access ring topology is presented. Using capacitive tuning elements, the electrical length of the ring can be manipulated to shift the nominal center frequency to a desired position. A synthesis is developed to determine the values of the capacitive elements. To show the advantage of the synthesis, it is applied to the reconfigurable filter design using RF lumped capacitors. The concept is further explored by introducing varactor-diodes to continuously tune the center frequency of the ring filter. For demonstration, two prototypes of reconfigurable ring filters are realized using microstrip technology, simulated, and measured to validate the proposed concept. The reconfigured filter using lumped elements is successfully reconfigured from 2 GHz to 984.4 MHz and miniaturized by 71% compared to the filter directly designed at the same reconfigured frequency, while, for the filter using varactor-diodes, the frequency is chosen from 1.10 GHz to 1.38 GHz spreading over 280 MHz frequency range. Both designs are found to be compact with acceptable insertion loss and high selectivity.

Ultrahigh dynamic range and low noise figure programmable integrated microwave photonic filter.

Project description:Microwave photonics has adopted a number of important concepts and technologies over the recent pasts, including photonic integration, versatile programmability, and techniques for enhancing key radio frequency performance metrics such as the noise figure and the dynamic range. However, to date, these aspects have not been achieved simultaneously in a single circuit. Here, we report a multi-functional photonic integrated circuit that enables programmable filtering functions with record-high performance. We demonstrate reconfigurable filter functions with record-low noise figure and a RF notch filter with ultra-high dynamic range. We achieve this unique feature using versatile complex spectrum tailoring enabled by an all integrated modulation transformer and a double injection ring resonator as a multi-function optical filtering component. Our work breaks the conventional and fragmented approach of integration, functionality and performance that currently prevents the adoption of integrated MWP systems in real applications.

Programmable terahertz chip-scale sensing interface with direct digital reconfiguration at sub-wavelength scales.

Project description:The ability to sense terahertz waves in a chip-scale technology operable at room temperature has potential for transformative applications in chemical sensing, biomedical imaging, spectroscopy and security. However, terahertz sensors are typically limited in their responsivity to a narrow slice of the incident field properties including frequency, angle of incidence and polarization. Sensor fusions across these field properties can revolutionize THz sensing allowing robustness, versatility and real-time imaging. Here, we present an approach that incorporates frequency, pattern and polarization programmability into a miniaturized chip-scale THz sensor. Through direct programming of a continuous electromagnetic interface at deep subwavelength scales, we demonstrate the ability to program the sensor across the spectrum (0.1-1.0 THz), angle of incidence and polarization simultaneously in a single chip implemented in an industry standard 65-nm CMOS process. The methodology is compatible with other technology substrates that can allow extension of such programmability into other spectral regions.
