The complete mitochondrial genome of Pheropsophus occipitalis MacLeay, 1825 (Coleoptera: Carabidae).

ABSTRACT: Pheropsophus occipitalis MacLeay is a predatory enemy prey heavily on agricultural pests. The length of the complete mitochondrial genome of P. occipitalis was 16,800 bp with 20.4% GC content, including 41.2% A, 11.9% C, 8.4% G, 38.5% T. The genome encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNA), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA). Phylogenetic analysis showed that P. occipitalis was clustered with Pheropsophus bimaculatus and Pheropsophus sobrinus. This study provided a scientific basis for the population genetics, phylogeny, and molecular taxonomy of P. occipitalis.

Project description:The lancanjiang species group of the termitophilous ground beetle genus Orthogonius Macleay, 1825, is defined and reviewed. This group is characterized by the black and rather elongate body, dense punctation on head and elytra, long and slender appendages, thin fore tibiae, and elytral interval 3 without a subapical setiferous pore. To date, the lancanjiang species group is composed of four species and one subspecies, including three new species and one new subspecies which are described in the present paper: O. macrophthalmus sp. n. (northern Vietnam), O. euthyphallus sp. n. (southern Vietnam), O. euthyphallus bolavenensis ssp. n. (southern Laos) and O. carinatus sp. n. (northern Laos). A distribution map and a key to all species of this group are also provided.

Members of this species group are distributed in Southeast Asia and represented by four species, including two new species: Orthogonius sabahicus sp. n. (Sabah, northern Borneo, Malaysia) and Orthogonius morvanianus sp. n. (southern Thailand). A key to all species of the species group is also provided.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Cicindela anchoralis Chevrolat, 1845 (Coleoptera: Carabidae).

Project description:The tiger beetle, Cicindela anchoralis Chevrolat, 1845 (Coleoptera: Carabidae), has been listed as an Endangered insect in South Korea. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of this organism (16,388 bp). The genome includes a typical set of genes (13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes) and 1 non-coding region with an arrangement identical to that observed in most insect genomes. Twelve PCGs had the typical ATN start codon, whereas ND1 had the atypical TTG codon. The AT-rich region is 1629-bp long, composed of 80.0% A + T nucleotides, and has no long repeat sequences. Phylogenetic analyses with concatenated sequences of the 13 PCGs and 2 rRNA genes, using the Bayesian inference (BI) method, placed C. anchoralis as a sister to the within-subfamilial species Habrodera capensis, with the highest nodal support presented by both BI and maximum likelihood (ML) methods. Three subfamilies represented by more than one species (Cicindelinae, Harpalinae, and Carabinae) were all determined by both BI and ML analyses to form strong monophyletic groups.

Project description:All New World members of the whirligig beetle genus Dineutus Macleay, 1825 are treated. The New World Dineutus are found to be composed of 18 species and 6 subspecies: one species, Dineutusmexicanus Ochs, 1925, stat. n. is elevated from subspecies to species rank, and the subspecies Dineutuscarolinusmutchleri Ochs, 1925, syn. n. is synonymized here with the typical form. Lectotypes are designated for Dineutusdiscolor Aubé, 1838, Dineutesmetallicus Aubé, 1838, Dineutussolitarius Aubé, 1838, Dineutesanalis Régimbart, 1883, and Gyrinuslongimanus Olivier, 1795. Each taxonomic unit is provided with a taxonomic history, type locality, diagnosis, distribution, habitat information, and a discussion section. The aedeagus and male mesotarsal claws are illustrated, and dorsal and ventral habitus images of both sexes, for each species and subspecies are provided. General distribution maps are provided for all taxonimc units. A key to the genera of New World Gyrinidae, as well as all the New World Dineutus species is provided. General Dineutus anatomy as well as a clarification of homology and anatomical terms is included.

Complete mitochondrial genome and phylogenetic analysis of Mastax latefasciata Liebke 1931 (Insecta: Coleoptera: Carabidae).

Project description:The genus Mastax Fischer von Waldheim 1827 belongs to the family Carabidae. Specimens of adult Mastax latefasciata Liebke, 1931 were collected from Yājì Hill, Huáihuà City, Húnán Province, China. The complete mitochondrial genome (GenBank accession number ON674050.1) of M. latefasciata was sequenced, annotated, and characterized. The results showed that it was a circular DNA molecule of 16,735 bp with 81.07% AT content and comprised 13 protein-coding genes (PCG), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 1 control region. The PCGs were initiated using typical ATN (Met) and TTG (Met) start codons and terminated using typical TAN stop codons. The phylogenetic position of Mastax within the Carabidae was first evaluated using complete mitogenomes, and the results showed that it was close to Cicindela anchoralis and Manticora tibialis.

Project description:The jianfengling species group of the termitophilous carabid genus Orthogonius MacLeay, 1825 is defined and reviewed. This species group ranges from southern China, crossing Indochina and Myanmar to eastern India. To date, the jianfengling species group is composed of ten species, including six new species which are hereinafter described and illustrated: Orthogonius wrasei sp. n. (Myanmar), Orthogonius bellus sp. n. and Orthogonius limbourgi sp. n. (Vietnam), Orthogonius politior sp. n., Orthogonius aberlenci sp. n. (Laos) and Orthogonius meghalayaensis sp. n. (India). Habitus, elytral apices and male genitalia of all species are illustrated. A key to species and a distribution map of jianfengling species group are provided.

Here, we first report the characterization of mitochondrial genome of D. zealandica in Diplocheila and its phylogenetic position. The complete mitogenome (GenBank accession number: MN995217) of D. zealandica from Henan Province consisted of a circular DNA molecule of 16,190 bp (with 21.66% G + C content), which comprised 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and 22 tRNA, and two rRNA genes. PCGs had typical ATN (Met) initiation codons and were terminated by typical TAN stop codons.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Phyllobrotica signata (Mannerheim, 1825) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae): characterization and phylogenetic implications.

Project description:The leaf beetles have important economic and ecological significance. Phyllobrotica signata belongs to the subfamily Galerucinae. In this study, the complete mitogenome of P. signata has been obtained by the next-generation sequencing. The length of the new complete mitogenome is 16,207 bp containing 37 genes and a control region. Fourteen species from Galerucinae and Alticinae were selected as ingroups for phylogenetic analysis based on mitogenomic data. The results supported that P. signata and P. quadrimaculata were sister groups. The mitochondrial genome of P. signata will provide valuable genetic information for exploring the phylogenetic relationships in the family Chrysomelidae.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the Jeju ground beetle Carabus smaragdinus monilifer was analyzed to determine its structure, morphology, and other characteristics. The 16,737-bp long mitochondrial genome consisted of 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs. The order, encoding direction, and the initiation and termination codons of the 37 genes of C. smaragdinus monilifer were identical to those of other species in the family Carabidae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that C. smaragdinus monilifer is clustered with Carabus lafossei. Herein, we have provided the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of C. smaragdinus monilifer to understand the phylogeny of Carabidae.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Oberea diversipes (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial DNA genome of the Oberea diversipes was reported. The genome was a circular molecule of 15,499 base pairs (bp), with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and an estimated 830 bp A + T-rich control region. The total base composition of the mitogenome was A-T bias, with 40.9% for A, 37.0% for T, 13.4% for C, and 8.7% for G. The molecular data presented here would be useful for further study of O. diversipes.
