Formation of magnetic nanowire arrays by cooperative lateral growth.

ABSTRACT: Nanowires typically grow along their longitudinal axis, and the long-range order among wires sustains only when a template exists. Here, we report an unprecedented electrochemical growth of ordered metallic nanowire arrays from an ultrathin electrolyte layer, which is achieved by solidifying the electrolyte solution below the freezing temperature. The thickness of the electrodeposit is instantaneously tunable by the applied electric pulses, leading to parallel ridges on webbed film without using any template. An array of metallic nanowires with desired separation and width determined by the applied pulses is formed on the substrate with arbitrary surface patterns by etching away the webbed film thereafter. This work demonstrates a previously unrecognized fabrication strategy that bridges the gap of top-down lithography and bottom-up self-organization in making ordered metallic nanowire arrays over a large area with low cost.

Facile decoding of quantitative signatures from magnetic nanowire arrays.

Project description:Magnetic nanoparticles have been proposed as contact-free minimal-background nanobarcodes, and yet it has been difficult to rapidly and reliably decode them in an assembly. Here, high aspect ratio nanoparticles, or magnetic nanowires (MNWs), are characterized using first-order reversal curves (FORC) to investigate quantitative decoding. We have synthesized four types of nanowires (differing in diameter) that might be used for barcoding, and identified four possible "signature" functions that might be used to quickly distinguish them. To test this, we have measured the signatures of several combination samples containing two or four different MNW types, and fit them to linear combinations of the individual type signatures to determine the volume ratios of the types. We find that the signature which determines the ratios most accurately involves only the slope of each FORC at its reversal field, which requires only 2-4 data points per FORC curve, reducing the measurement time by a factor of 10 to 50 compared to measuring the full FORC.

Capillary condensation-driven growth of perovskite nanowire arrays for multi-functional photodetector.

Project description:Metal-halide perovskite nanowire array photodetectors based on the solution method are valuable in the field of polarized light detection because of their unique one-dimensional array structure and excellent photoelectric performance. However, the limited wettability of liquids poses challenges for achieving large-scale and high-quality perovskite nanowire arrays. To address this issue, we develop a facile method utilizing capillary condensation to grow high-quality centimeter-scale perovskite nanowire arrays. Based on these nanowires, the fabricated photodetector showcases specific detectivities of 1.95 × 1013 jones, surpassing commercially available silicon detectors in weak-light detection capabilities. The weak-light imaging capability of our nanowire photodetectors has been successfully demonstrated at intensities below 54 nW/cm2. Moreover, the nanowire arrays also display excellent polarization absorption characteristics, promising applications in polarized light detection. Notably, the perovskite nanowire arrays can be grown on flexible substrates by employing capillary condensation, which retains 83% of their properties after 2000 bending cycles. This research enhances the potential of perovskite nanowire arrays photodetector in practical applications.

Formation of Highly Ordered Platinum Nanowire Arrays on Silicon via Laser-Induced Self-Organization.

Project description:Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) provide an elegant solution for the generation of highly ordered periodic patterns on the surface of solids. In this study, LIPSS are utilized for the formation of periodic platinum nanowire arrays. In a process based on laser-stimulated self-organization, platinum thin films, sputter-deposited onto silicon, are transformed into nanowire arrays with an average periodicity of 538 nm. The width of the platinum nanowires is adjustable in a range from 20 nm to 250 nm by simply adjusting the thickness of the initial platinum thin films in a range from 0.3 nm to 4.3 nm. With increasing width, platinum nanowires show a rising tendency to sink into the surface of the silicon wafer, thus indicating alloying between platinum and silicon upon LIPSS-formation by a nanosecond-pulsed laser. The Pt/silicon wires may be etched away, leaving a complementary nanostructure in the silicon surface.

High-Speed and Direction-Controlled Formation of Silicon Nanowire Arrays Assisted by Electric Field.

Project description:Metal-assisted chemical etching (MaCE), a low-cost and versatile method was considered a promising technique for preparing silicon nanowires (SiNWs), yet the lack of well controlling the injected holes within Si might reduce the etching rate, create the unwanted sidewall etching, and degrade the structural uniformity. Herein, in this study, the bias-modulated MaCE process was performed, showing the etching rates more than four times of magnitude than that of typical bias-free MaCE with large-area uniformity. It was found that the field-mediated hole rectification overwhelmed the effect of retarded diffusivity from reactive ions, and thus the dynamics of distributed etching were therefore transferred to the directional etching behaviors. In addition, the etching orientation could be also manipulated with the external bias. The results demonstrated that the etching direction was switched toward the slanted features by varying the electric polarization, creating the special slanted/vertical NW arrays, which possessed the superior antireflection characteristics than the conventional vertically aligned features.

Controlled growth of platinum nanowire arrays on sulfur doped graphene as high performance electrocatalyst.

Project description:Graphene supported Pt nanostructures have great potential to be used as catalysts in electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies; however the simultaneous control of Pt morphology and dispersion, along with ideally tailoring the physical properties of the catalyst support properties has proven very challenging. Using sulfur doped graphene (SG) as a support material, the heterogeneous dopant atoms could serve as nucleation sites allowing for the preparation of SG supported Pt nanowire arrays with ultra-thin diameters (2-5 nm) and dense surface coverage. Detailed investigation of the preparation technique reveals that the structure of the resulting composite could be readily controlled by fine tuning the Pt nanowire nucleation and growth reaction kinetics and the Pt-support interactions, whereby a mechanistic platinum nanowire array growth model is proposed. Electrochemical characterization demonstrates that the composite materials have 2-3 times higher catalytic activities toward the oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reaction compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Growth of Co Nanomagnet Arrays with Enhanced Magnetic Anisotropy.

Project description:A trigon structure formed by submonolayer gadolinium deposition onto Au(111) is revealed as a robust growth template for Co nanodot arrays. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism measurements evidence that the Co nanoislands behave as independent magnetic entities with an out-of-plane easy axis of anisotropy and enhanced magnetic anisotropy values, as compared to other self-organized Co nanodot superlattices. The large strain induced by the lattice mismatch at the interface between Co and trigons is discussed as the main reason for the increased magnetic anisotropy of the nanoislands.

Plasma nitriding induced growth of Pt-nanowire arrays as high performance electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Project description:In this work, we demonstrate an innovative approach, combing a novel active screen plasma (ASP) technique with green chemical synthesis, for a direct fabrication of uniform Pt nanowire arrays on large-area supports. The ASP treatment enables in-situ N-doping and surface modification to the support surface, significantly promoting the uniform growth of tiny Pt nuclei which directs the growth of ultrathin single-crystal Pt nanowire (2.5-3 nm in diameter) arrays, forming a three-dimensional (3D) nano-architecture. Pt nanowire arrays in-situ grown on the large-area gas diffusion layer (GDL) (5 cm(2)) can be directly used as the catalyst electrode in fuel cells. The unique design brings in an extremely thin electrocatalyst layer, facilitating the charge transfer and mass transfer properties, leading to over two times higher power density than the conventional Pt nanoparticle catalyst electrode in real fuel cell environment. Due to the similar challenges faced with other nanostructures and the high availability of ASP for other material surfaces, this work will provide valuable insights and guidance towards the development of other new nano-architectures for various practical applications.

Thermo-Convective Solution Growth of Vertically Aligned Zinc Oxide Nanowire Arrays for Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting.

Project description:The search for a synthesis method to create longer ZnO NWAs with high-quality vertical alignment, and the investigation of their electrical properties, have become increasingly important. In this study, a hydrothermal method for growing vertically aligned arrays of ZnO nanowires (NWs) using localized heating was utilized. To produce longer NWs, the temperature environment of the growth system was optimized with a novel reaction container that provided improved thermal insulation. At a process temperature above ~90 °C, ZnO NWs reached a length of ~26.8 µm within 24 h, corresponding to a growth rate of 1.1 µm/h, nearly double the rate of 0.6 µm/h observed in traditional chemical bath growth using a glass reactor. The densely grown NWs (~1.9/µm2), with a diameter of ~0.65 µm, exhibited a preferred hexagonal c-axis orientation and were vertically aligned to the (100) silicon (Si) substrate. These NW structures have multiple applications, e.g., in piezotronic strain sensors, gas sensing, and piezoelectric energy harvesting. As proof of concept, a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) was fabricated by embedding the NWs in an S1818 polymer matrix over a 15 mm × 15 mm area. Under repeated impulse-type compressive forces of 0.9 N, a maximum peak output voltage of ~95.9 mV was recorded, which is higher by a factor of four to five than the peak output voltage of 21.6 mV previously obtained with NWs measuring ~1.8 µm in length.

Nanowire arrays restore vision in blind mice.

Project description:The restoration of light response with complex spatiotemporal features in retinal degenerative diseases towards retinal prosthesis has proven to be a considerable challenge over the past decades. Herein, inspired by the structure and function of photoreceptors in retinas, we develop artificial photoreceptors based on gold nanoparticle-decorated titania nanowire arrays, for restoration of visual responses in the blind mice with degenerated photoreceptors. Green, blue and near UV light responses in the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are restored with a spatial resolution better than 100 µm. ON responses in RGCs are blocked by glutamatergic antagonists, suggesting functional preservation of the remaining retinal circuits. Moreover, neurons in the primary visual cortex respond to light after subretinal implant of nanowire arrays. Improvement in pupillary light reflex suggests the behavioral recovery of light sensitivity. Our study will shed light on the development of a new generation of optoelectronic toolkits for subretinal prosthetic devices.

Thermal conductivity in porous silicon nanowire arrays.

Project description:The nanoscale features in silicon nanowires (SiNWs) can suppress phonon propagation and strongly reduce their thermal conductivities compared to the bulk value. This work measures the thermal conductivity along the axial direction of SiNW arrays with varying nanowire diameters, doping concentrations, surface roughness, and internal porosities using nanosecond transient thermoreflectance. For SiNWs with diameters larger than the phonon mean free path, porosity substantially reduces the thermal conductivity, yielding thermal conductivities as low as 1 W/m/K in highly porous SiNWs. However, when the SiNW diameter is below the phonon mean free path, both the internal porosity and the diameter significantly contribute to phonon scattering and lead to reduced thermal conductivity of the SiNWs.
