Distribution characteristics of microbial community structure in atmospheric particulates of the typical industrial city in Jiangsu province, China.

ABSTRACT: In this study, Xuzhou, a typical industrial city in the north of Jiangsu Province, was chosen to investigate the pollution level of atmospheric particulates. The proportion of fine particles (PM_2.5) in PM₁₀ is larger than that of coarse particles (about 58%). The physicochemical properties of PM_2.5 were analyzed by SEM and EDS. DGGE was used to study the distribution characteristics of bacterial community structure on atmospheric particulates (TSP, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀) in different functional areas of Xuzhou city during the winter haze. It was found that the microbial populations of atmospheric particles were mainly divided into three groups: Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Pachytenella. The community structure of bacteria in fine particle size was more abundant than that in coarse particle size. When haze occurs, the concentration of all kinds of pathogens in fine particle size will increase. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the monitoring and management of fine particles.

Project description:BackgroundWith the continuous progress of the epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and the constant mutation of the virus strain, reinfection occurred in previously infected individuals and caused waves of the epidemic in many countries. Therefore, we aimed to explore the characteristics of COVID-19 reinfection during the epidemic period in Yangzhou and provide a scientific basis for assessing the COVID-19 situation and optimizing the allocation of medical resources.MethodsWe chose previously infected individuals of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) reported locally in Yangzhou city from January 2020 to November 30, 2022. A telephone follow-up of cases was conducted from February to March 2023 to collect the COVID-19 reinfection information. We conducted a face-to-face survey on that who met the definition of reinfection to collect information on clinical symptoms, vaccination status of COVID-19, and so on. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0.ResultsAmong the 999 eligible respondents (92.24% of all the participants), consisting of 42.28% males and 57.72% females, the reinfection incidence of females was significantly higher than that of male cases (χ2 = 5.197, P < 0.05); the ages of the respondents ranged from 1 to 91 years, with the mean age of 42.28 (standard deviation 22.73) years; the most of the sufferers were infected initially with Delta variant (56.88%), followed by the Omicron subvariants BA.1/BA.2 (39.52%). Among all the eligible respondents, 126 (12.61%) reported COVID-19 reinfection appearing during the epidemic period, and the intervals between infections were from 73 to 1,082 days. The earlier the initial infection occurred, the higher the reinfection incidence and the reinfection incidence was significantly increased when the interval was beyond 1 year (P < 0.01) .119 reinfection cases (94.4%) were symptomatic when the most common symptoms included fever (65.54%) and cough (61.34%); compared with the initial infection cases, the proportion of clinical symptoms in the reinfected cases was significantly higher (P < 0.01). The reinfection incidence of COVID-19 vaccination groups with different doses was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Fewer reinfections were observed among the respondents with three doses of COVID-19 vaccination compared to the respondents with two doses (χ2 = 14.595, P < 0.001) or without COVID-19 vaccination (χ2 =4.263, P = 0.039).ConclusionAfter the epidemic period of COVID-19, the reinfection incidence varied with different types of SARS-CoV-2 strains. The reinfection incidence was influenced by various factors such as virus characteristics, vaccination, epidemic prevention policies, and individual variations. As the SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate, vaccination and appropriate personal protection have practical significance in reducing the risk of reinfection.

Project description:BackgroundWeight management is an effective prevention and treatment strategy for diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of diabetic patients towards weight management.MethodsDiabetic patients treated at Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, between January 2023 and June 2023 were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect their demographic characteristics and KAP toward weight management. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the inter-relationships among KAP scores.ResultsAmong a total of 503 valid questionnaires that were collected, 55.07% were filled out by men and 54.67% by those aged < 60 years. The mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and practice were 8.03 ± 3.525 (possible range: 0-13), 31.88 ± 3.524 (possible range: 10-50), and 22.24 ± 3.318 (possible range: 9-45), respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed the knowledge was positively associated with attitude (r = 0.295, P < 0.001) and practice (r = 0.131, P < 0.001), and attitude was positively associated with practice (r = 0.140, P = 0.002). SEM demonstrated positive associations between knowledge and attitude (β = 0.28, P < 0.001), and attitude and practice (β = 0.09, P = 0.019). Moreover, older age was negatively associated with knowledge (β=-0.04, P = 0.001), while higher education (β = 1.220, P < 0.001), increased monthly income (β = 0.779, P < 0.001), diagnosis of fatty liver (β = 1.03, P = 0.002), and screening for excess visceral fat (β = 1.11, P = 0.002) were positively associated with knowledge.ConclusionDiabetic patients showed moderate knowledge, neutral attitudes, and inappropriate practices toward weight management. Knowledge was positively associated with attitude and practice. These findings provided valuable directions for healthcare interventions targeting improved KAP status of weight management among diabetic patients.

Project description:The arid zone of central Asia secluded inland and has the typical features of the atmosphere. Human activities have had a significant impact on the air quality in this region. Urumqi is a key city in the core area of the Silk Road and an important economic center in Northwestern China. The urban environment is playing an increasingly important role in regional development. To study the characteristics and influencing factors of the main atmospheric pollutants in Urumqi, this study selected Urumqi's daily air quality index (AQI) data and observation data of six major pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), breathable particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3_8h) from 2014 to 2018 in conjunction with meteorological data to use a backward trajectory analysis method to study the main characteristics of atmospheric pollutants and their sources in Urumqi from 2014 to 2018. The results showed that: (1) From 2014 to 2018, the annual average of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO concentrations showed a downward trend, and O3_8h concentrations first increased, then decreased, and then increased, reaching the highest value in 2018 (82.15 μg·m-3); The seasonal changes of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO concentrations were characterized by low values in summer and fall seasons and high values in winter and spring seasons. The concentration of O3_8h, however, was in the opposite trend, showing the high values in summer and fall seasons, and low values in winter and spring seasons. From 2014 to 2018, with the exception of O3_8h, the concentration changes of the other five major air pollutants were high in December, January, and February, and low in May, June, and July; the daily changes showed a "U-shaped" change during the year. The high-value areas of the "U-shaped" mode formed around the 50th day and the 350th day. (2) The high-value area of AQI was from the end of fall (November) to the beginning of the following spring (March), and the low-value area was from April to October. It showed a U-shaped change trend during the year and the value was mainly distributed between 50 and 100. (3) The concentrations of major air pollutants in Urumqi were significantly negatively correlated with precipitation, temperature, and humidity (P<0.01), and had the highest correlation coefficients with temperature. (4) Based on the above analysis results, this study analyzed two severe pollution events from late November to early December. Analysis showed that the PM2.5/PM10 ratio in two events remained at about 0.1 when the pollution occurred, but was higher before and after the pollution (up to 1.46). It was shown that the pollution was a simple sandstorm process. Backward trajectory analysis clustered the airflow trajectories reaching Urumqi into 4 categories, and the trajectories from central Asia contributed the maximum values of average PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations.
