Project description:BackgroundNumerous publications have documented the mode of transmission and prevention of COVID-19 but little or no evidence exists on the experiences of people who survived the infection.ObjectiveThis study explored the specific experiences of persons who were infected with COVID-19, but have recovered completely. A secondary objective was to identify essential elements in the lived experiences of such persons, which would be useful in designing appropriate policies and programs for managing the virus in Nigeria.MethodThe data were collected using in-depth interviews with 21 persons who were diagnosed with the virus and recovered. The data were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively using NVivo software. The experiences of the survivors of COVID-19 were examined under six themes: compliance with prevention measures before being infected, perceptions on how they contracted the virus, the symptoms they experienced, the management of the disease, their experiences with the healthcare system, their emotional experiences, and their recommendations on specific strategies to prevent and manage the virus based on their experiences.ResultsThe commonly perceived means of contracting the virus were through colleagues, patients, and friends who were infected. The most commonly experienced symptoms were anosmia and fever. The health providers were described as courteous but some of the respondents observed avoidance and fear. Not all the interviewees knew the drugs they were treated with, but some, particularly the medical personnel, identified hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, vitamin C, Augmentin, among others. Some of the participants used herbal remedies. While some respondents recounted good experiences in the isolation centre, others had unpleasant experiences. Direct and indirect encounters which were perceived as stigmatizing and discriminatory were reported by some respondents.ConclusionWe conclude that persons who recovered from COVID-19 in Nigeria had varied experiences relating to the mode of infection, the clinical features, methods of treatment, and psychosocial effects of the virus. These experiences would be useful for designing and implementing appropriate interventions, policies, and programs for managing the pandemic in the country.

Project description:Background and objectivesThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created unexpected stressors for society and could disproportionately affect more vulnerable groups. One such group is couples facing young-onset dementias (YOD), who experience pandemic-induced stressors alongside ongoing YOD-related stressors (e.g., progressive symptoms, increased caregiving needs). Using a qualitative design, our objective was to characterize the experiences of couples living with YOD early in the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on couples' 'relationships' and well-being.Research design and methodsCouples (N = 23) of persons with YOD and their spousal caregivers participated in a 1 hour live video, joint interview during the early COVID-19 pandemic. We used a hybrid inductive-deductive coding approach to thematic analysis to extract findings within 2 a priori domains: (a) psychosocial stressors experienced during the early pandemic and (2) the impact of early pandemic stressors on couples' relationships and well-being.ResultsThematic analyses revealed 6 main themes: (a) increased caregiving responsibilities, (b) increased uncertainty, (c) increased social isolation and disruptions in social support and medical care, (d) loss of meaningful activities and routines, (e) changes to the couple's relationship, and (f) heightened emotional distress.Discussion and implicationsThe COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated relationship strain and distress among couples managing YOD. This population may face negative outcomes due to the dual impact of YOD- and pandemic-related stressors. It is imperative to provide timely resources and psychosocial support to couples facing YOD to mitigate the negative impact of such stressors on individual health and well-being and the couples' relationship together.

Project description:BackgroundCOVID-19 has brought unprecedented demands to general practitioners (GPs) worldwide. We examined their knowledge, preparedness, and experiences managing COVID-19 in Australia.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey of GPs members of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) was conducted between June and September 2020.ResultsOut of 244 survey responses, a majority of GPs (76.6%) indicated having good knowledge of COVID-19, relying mostly on state/territory department of health (84.4%) and the RACGP (76.2%) websites to source up-to-date information. Most felt prepared to manage patients with COVID-19 (75.7%), yet over half reported not receiving training in the use of PPE. The majority were concerned about contracting SARS-CoV-2, more stressed than usual, and have heavier workloads. Their greatest challenges included scarcity of PPE, personal distress, and information overload.ConclusionAccess to PPE, training, accurate information, and preparedness are fundamental for the successful role of general practices during outbreaks.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected older adults and brought about unprecedented challenges to geriatricians. We aimed to evaluate the experiences of early career geriatricians (residents or consultants with up to 10 years of experience) throughout Europe using an online survey. We obtained 721 responses. Most of the respondents were females (77.8%) and residents in geriatric medicine (54.6%). The majority (91.4%) were directly involved in the care of patients with COVID-19. The respondents reported moderate levels of anxiety and feelings of being overloaded with work. The anxiety levels were higher in women than in men. Most of the respondents experienced a feeling of a strong restriction on their private lives and a change in their work routine. The residents also reported a moderate disruption in their training and research activities. In conclusion, early career geriatricians experienced a major impact of COVID-19 on their professional and private lives.

Project description:BACKGROUND:COVID-19 and the resultant lockdowns have caused a global discomposure. Out of a plethora of ramifications of this unusual state, mental health problems are becoming a serious concern. Considering the peculiarity of the situation, encapsulation of the lived experiences of people affected by COVID-19 may lead us towards a better understanding and control of the situation. AIM:The aim of the present study was to get an in-depth analysis of the lived experiences of Indian youth amid COVID-19 crisis and its impact on their mental health. METHOD:Ten college going students were telephonically interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule to elicit participants' experiences with COVID-19 and the impact it has posed on their mental health. Transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). RESULTS:The analysis revealed three master themes: (1) 'Impact on mental health', (2) 'Positive experiences' and (3) 'Ways of coping amid the crisis'. CONCLUSION:The study draws attention to the mental health concerns of Indian youth amid the current crisis. The findings also highlight the positive outcomes of the crisis as well as the different ways of coping adopted by young individuals in India.

Project description:Understanding the day-to-day lived experiences of individuals who have had or are still recovering from Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19), whilst a complex challenge, presents the opportunity to listen and learn. Composite vignettes provide a novel approach to explore and present descriptive portrayals of the most commonly derived experiences and recovery journeys. The thematic analysis of 47 shared accounts (semi-structured interviews with adults aged ≥18 years; 40 females; 6-11 months post-COVID-19 infection) produced a series of four intricate character stories written through the lens of a single individual. Each vignette gives a voice to and captures a different experience trajectory. From the point of initial symptom development onwards, the vignettes depict how COVID-19 has affected everyday lives, focusing on the secondary non-biological socio-psychological effects and implications. The vignettes highlight in participants' own words: i) the potential negative implications of not addressing the psychological effects of COVID-19; ii) the lack of symptom and recovery linearity; iii) the ongoing 'lottery' of access to healthcare services; and iv) the highly variable, yet generally devastating, impacts that COVID-19 and consequent long-COVID has had across multiple facets of daily living.

Project description:Background and aimPublic health measures used to mitigate the COVID-19 epidemic may have unintended, detrimental consequences particularly on older adults, whose voices and perspectives are often silent or silenced. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of individuals aged 64 or older during the first COVID-19 lockdown.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study in a convenience sample of 19 older adults (aged 64+) living at home in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland during the first COVID-19 lockdown, between April and May 2020. Participants varied in terms of gender, education, age, nationality, and socio-economic status. We conducted semi-structured phone interviews to elicit emotions, expectations and hopes in relation to the present situation, and the post-pandemic world. We inquired about opinions on the enforced public health measures, including those specifically targeting older adults, and on the societal portrayal of older adults.FindingsWe found that the epidemic and the public health response to it had both generated a variety of resentments and a high degree of ambivalence at the individual, micro-, meso- and macro-social levels. We also found that labelling older adults as an at-risk sub-population inevitably contributed to public and self-stigmatization.DiscussionWe conducted an in-depth qualitative investigation of lived experiences of older adults during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in one of the most gravely hit region in Europe. Our findings on the complexity of unintended, detrimental consequences of outbreak responses on older adults have relevant implications for local adaptions of public health measures, and suggest that public health authorities should engage vulnerable sub-populations and promote bi-directional communication to inform and support communities.

Project description:BackgroundWith the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic, pregnancy and childbirth for women are taking place in unusual circumstances. We explored the lived experiences of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic to better understand their experience of pregnancy so that better support could be provided.MethodsWe used a descriptive phenomenological approach to understand the lived experience of pregnant women in COVID-19 pandemic. We collected data using a purposive sampling method through in-depth interviews in cyberspace with a semi-structured questionnaire. We used Colaizzi's seven-step content analysis method to analyze the research data with the help of MAXQDA software version 2020.ResultsWe conducted this descriptive phenomenology study on 19 pregnant women in a period between the 10th to the 20th of May, 2020. The participating women were already pregnant when the first signs of the epidemic appeared in the country and at the time of the interview. We acquired four themes including disruption of the tranquility and regular routines of daily life, new challenges caused by the epidemic, resilience and strength in facing the crisis, and adaptation with new conditions.ConclusionsThe pregnant women were under intense stress during the COVID-19 outbreak. The general mobilization the health system is necessary for alleviating pregnant women's difficulties in situations like the COVID-19 epidemic. Virtual training classes and virtual counseling may enhance the peace and tranquility of pregnant women.

Project description:BackgroundThe management of the long-term sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, known as post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), continues to challenge the medical community, largely owing to a significant gap in the understanding of its aetiology, diagnosis and effective treatment.AimTo examine general practitioners' (GPs) experiences of caring for patients with PCS and to identify unmet care needs and opportunities for improvement.Design and settingThis study follows a qualitative design, using in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews with GPs (N = 31) from across Germany.MethodInterviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative content analysis.ResultsGPs reported that they were often the first point of contact for patients with persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection, with symptoms typically resolving within weeks. While ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 is perceived to be more common, the relevance of PCS to GP practices is considerable given its severe impact on patients' functioning, social participation and the substantial time required for patient care. GPs coordinate diagnosis and treatment but face challenges because of the unclear definition of PCS and difficulties in attributing symptoms, resulting in a cautious approach to ICD-10 coding. Interviewees highlight lengthy diagnostic pathways and barriers to accessing specialist care.ConclusionThe findings confirm the high functional limitations and psychosocial burden of PCS on patients, and the central role of GPs in their care. The study suggests a need for further research and health policy measures to support GPs in navigating diagnostic uncertainty, interprofessional communication and the limited evidence on effective treatments.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic created a complex high-risk clinical research environment with clinical research activities significantly impacted. Clinical research stakeholders adapted rapidly to new clinical practices; PPE, infection control policies, all while engaging with a more unwell patient demographic. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of conducting clinical research during COVID-19 with clinical research stakeholders.MethodsThis qualitative study of semi-structured interviews conducted with clinical research stakeholders in an acute Hospital setting across a variety of disciplines; Consultant Geriatrician, Clinical Research Nurse, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy. Interviews were fully transcribed prior to reflexive thematic analysis. NVivo software was used to support data management and analysis.ResultsThree main themes were produced; (1) The challenging COVID-19 clinical research landscape, (2) COVID-19 clinical research communication barriers, and (3) Adaptations and learnings from clinical research during COVID-19.ConclusionsThis study explored the experiences of conducting clinical research during COVID-19 with clinical research stakeholders examining challenges faced and adaptations required. The findings inform, equip and support clinical research stakeholders in the event of future adverse public health events.
