Quantity bias in comparison-shopping of multi-item baskets.

ABSTRACT: Comparison-shopping applications are widespread and have been the subject of considerable research and development. There has also been widespread recognition that people are predictably irrational when making shopping decisions. In this work, we combine these two facts to propose a new type of predicable irrational behavior that has important implications for comparison-shopping applications that now utilize crowdsourcing to increase the information provided about sellers in these electronic marketplaces. In a series of three studies we demonstrate that, even after controlling for relative and absolute savings, the number of items in a shopping trip is an important consideration in the decision to make a trip to more than one store. This is true of both actual trips in physical shopping in the real world, and virtual trips to other vendors in online shopping. We term this effect quantity bias.

Optimizing multi-supplier multi-item joint replenishment problem for non-instantaneous deteriorating items with quantity discounts.

Project description:This paper deals with a new joint replenishment problem, in which a number of non-instantaneous deteriorating items are replenished from several suppliers under different quantity discounts schemes. Involving both joint replenishment decisions and supplier selection decisions makes the problem to be NP-hard. In particular, the consideration of non-instantaneous deterioration makes it more challenging to handle. We first construct a mathematical model integrated with a supplier selection system and a joint replenishment program for non-instantaneous deteriorating items to formulate the problem. Then we develop a novel swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, the Improved Moth-flame Optimization (IMFO) algorithm, to solve the proposed model. The results of several numerical experiments analyses reveal that the IMFO algorithm is an effective algorithm for solving the proposed model in terms of solution quality and searching stableness. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments to further investigate the performance of the proposed model.

Item bias detection in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale using structural equation modeling: comparison with other item bias detection methods.

Project description:PurposeComparison of patient-reported outcomes may be invalidated by the occurrence of item bias, also known as differential item functioning. We show two ways of using structural equation modeling (SEM) to detect item bias: (1) multigroup SEM, which enables the detection of both uniform and nonuniform bias, and (2) multidimensional SEM, which enables the investigation of item bias with respect to several variables simultaneously.MethodGender- and age-related bias in the items of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; Zigmond and Snaith in Acta Psychiatr Scand 67:361-370, 1983) from a sample of 1068 patients was investigated using the multigroup SEM approach and the multidimensional SEM approach. Results were compared to the results of the ordinal logistic regression, item response theory, and contingency tables methods reported by Cameron et al. (Qual Life Res 23:2883-2888, 2014).ResultsBoth SEM approaches identified two items with gender-related bias and two items with age-related bias in the Anxiety subscale, and four items with age-related bias in the Depression subscale. Results from the SEM approaches generally agreed with the results of Cameron et al., although the SEM approaches identified more items as biased.ConclusionSEM provides a flexible tool for the investigation of item bias in health-related questionnaires. Multidimensional SEM has practical and statistical advantages over multigroup SEM, and over other item bias detection methods, as it enables item bias detection with respect to multiple variables, of various measurement levels, and with more statistical power, ultimately providing more valid comparisons of patients' well-being in both research and clinical practice.

Item Responses in Quantity-Frequency Questionnaires: Implications for Data Generalizability.

Project description:Alcohol consumption is an important predictor of a variety of negative outcomes. There is an extensive literature that examines the differences in the estimated level of alcohol consumption between types of assessments (e.g., quantity-frequency [QF] questionnaires, daily diaries). However, it is typically assumed that all QF-based measures are nearly identical in their assessment of the volume of alcohol consumption in a population. Using timeline follow-back data and constructing common QF consumption measures, we examined differences among survey instruments to assess alcohol consumption and heavy drinking. Using three data sets, including clinical to community samples, we demonstrate how scale-specific item characteristics (i.e., number of response options and ranges of consumption assessed by each option) can substantially affect the estimated mean level of consumption and estimated prevalence of binge drinking. Our analyses suggest that problems can be mitigated by employing more resolved measures of quantity and frequency in consumption questionnaires.

The impact of price promotions on confectionery and snacks on the energy content of shopping baskets: A randomised controlled trial in an experimental online supermarket.

Project description:Overconsumption of foods high in fat, sugars, and salt (HFSS) poses a significant risk to health. The government in England has passed legislation that would limit some price promotions of HFSS foods within supermarkets, but evidence regarding likely impacts of these policies, especially in online settings, is limited. This study aimed to determine whether there were any differences in the energy and nutrient content of shopping baskets after removing promotions on HFSS foods in an online experimental supermarket. UK adults (n = 511) were asked to select food from four categories with a £10 budget in an online experimental supermarket: confectionery; biscuits and crackers; crisps, nuts and snacking fruit; cakes and tarts. They were randomly allocated to one of two trial arms: (1) promotions present (matched to promotion frequency seen in a major UK retailer) (n = 257), or (2) all promotions removed from all products within the target food categories (n = 254). The primary outcome analysis used linear regression to compare total energy (kcal) of items placed in shopping baskets when promotions were present vs. absent, while secondary analyses investigated differences in nutrients and energy purchased from individual food categories. Mean energy in food selected without promotions was 5156 kcal per basket (SD 1620), compared to 5536 kcal (SD 1819) with promotions, a difference of -552kcal (95%CIs: -866, -238), equivalent to 10%. There were no significant differences in energy purchased for any individual category between groups. No evidence was found of other changes in nutritional composition of baskets or of significant interactions between the impact of promotions and participant characteristics (gender, age, ethnicity) on energy purchased. Removing promotions on HFSS foods resulted in significantly less total energy selected in an online experimental supermarket study.

Estimating meaningful thresholds for multi-item questionnaires using item response theory.

Project description:PurposeMeaningful thresholds are needed to interpret patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) results. This paper introduces a new method, based on item response theory (IRT), to estimate such thresholds. The performance of the method is examined in simulated datasets and two real datasets, and compared with other methods.MethodsThe IRT method involves fitting an IRT model to the PROM items and an anchor item indicating the criterion state of interest. The difficulty parameter of the anchor item represents the meaningful threshold on the latent trait. The latent threshold is then linked to the corresponding expected PROM score. We simulated 4500 item response datasets to a 10-item PROM, and an anchor item. The datasets varied with respect to the mean and standard deviation of the latent trait, and the reliability of the anchor item. The real datasets consisted of a depression scale with a clinical depression diagnosis as anchor variable and a pain scale with a patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) question as anchor variable.ResultsThe new IRT method recovered the true thresholds accurately across the simulated datasets. The other methods, except one, produced biased threshold estimates if the state prevalence was smaller or greater than 0.5. The adjusted predictive modeling method matched the new IRT method (also in the real datasets) but showed some residual bias if the prevalence was smaller than 0.3 or greater than 0.7.ConclusionsThe new IRT method perfectly recovers meaningful (interpretational) thresholds for multi-item questionnaires, provided that the data satisfy the assumptions for IRT analysis.

A Short Note on Aberrant Responses Bias in Item Response Theory.

Project description:Item response models often cannot calculate true individual response probabilities because of the existence of response disturbances (such as guessing and cheating). Many studies on aberrant responses under item response theory (IRT) framework had been conducted. Some of them focused on how to reduce the effect of aberrant responses, and others focused on how to detect aberrant examinees, such as person fit analysis. The purpose of this research was to derive a generalized formula of bias with/without aberrant responses, that showed the effect of both non-aberrant and aberrant response data on the bias of capability estimation mathematically. A new evaluation criterion, named aberrant absolute bias (|ABIAS|), was proposed to detect aberrant examinees. Simulation studies and application to a real dataset were conducted to demonstrate the efficiency and the utility of |ABIAS|.

Comparison of the risks of shopping behavior and opioid abuse between tapentadol and oxycodone and association of shopping behavior and opioid abuse.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study compared the risks of opioid shopping behavior and opioid abuse between tapentadol immediate release and oxycodone immediate release and, to validate the definition of shopping, examined the association between opioid shopping and opioid abuse further.Materials and methodsThis retrospective cohort study using linked dispensing and diagnosis databases followed opioid-naive patients for development of shopping behavior and/or opioid abuse during 1 year after initial exposure to tapentadol or oxycodone. Shopping was defined by having overlapping opioid prescriptions from >1 prescriber filled at ≥3 pharmacies; abuse by having International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision diagnoses reflecting opioid abuse, addiction, or dependence. To determine their association, we cross-tabulated shopping and opioid abuse and calculated odds ratios. Risks of developing each outcome were estimated using logistic regression.ResultsAmong 277,401 participants initiating opioid use with tapentadol (39,524) or oxycodone (237,877), 0.6% developed shopping behavior, 0.75% developed abuse. Higher proportions of patients in the oxycodone group developed shopping behavior and abuse than in the tapentadol group (shopping: adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.45 [0.36-0.55]; abuse: 0.44 [0.37-0.54]). Shopping behavior and abuse were associated; of those with shopping behavior, 6.5% had abuse. Age (18 to 64 y), sex (male), prior benzodiazepine use, paying cash, and history (mood disorders, abuse of nonopioid medications, and back pain) were risk factors for developing either outcome.DiscussionShopping behavior and abuse measure complementary, but associated, constructs, which further validates the current definition of shopping. The risk of developing either is lower among patients who initiate opioid use with tapentadol than those who initiate opioid use with oxycodone.

Brief Report: An Evaluation of Item Bias on the Functional Activities Questionnaire.

Project description:ObjectiveTo evaluate whether the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), a commonly used measure of functional status in neurodegenerative disease research, performs equivalently across demographically diverse subgroups of participants.MethodThe FAQs from 30,613 National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center participants were evaluated with a hybrid graded response model-logistic ordinal regression approach to determine the presence of differential item functioning (DIF) within five demographic groups: education, ethnicity, race, language, and sex.ResultsMeasurable DIF was observed for FAQ items in all groups; however, measures of effect size, latent trait distributions, and item characteristic curves suggested that the impact was minimal for research and practice.ConclusionsThe FAQ is able to provide minimally biased assessments of daily functioning across diverse participants, suggesting potential value for offsetting disparities in diagnosis and treatment.

Executive control processes underlying multi-item working memory.

Project description:A dominant view of prefrontal cortex (PFC) function is that it stores task-relevant information in working memory. To examine this and determine how it applies when multiple pieces of information must be stored, we trained two subjects to perform a multi-item color change detection task and recorded activity of neurons in PFC. Few neurons encoded the color of the items. Instead, the predominant encoding was spatial: a static signal reflecting the item's position and a dynamic signal reflecting the subject's covert attention. These findings challenge the notion that PFC stores task-relevant information. Instead, we suggest that the contribution of PFC is in controlling the allocation of resources to support working memory. In support of this, we found that increased power in the alpha and theta bands of PFC local field potentials, which are thought to reflect long-range communication with other brain areas, was correlated with more precise color representations.

Data quantity is more important than its spatial bias for predictive species distribution modelling.

Project description:Biological records are often the data of choice for training predictive species distribution models (SDMs), but spatial sampling bias is pervasive in biological records data at multiple spatial scales and is thought to impair the performance of SDMs. We simulated presences and absences of virtual species as well as the process of recording these species to evaluate the effect on species distribution model prediction performance of (1) spatial bias in training data, (2) sample size (the average number of observations per species), and (3) the choice of species distribution modelling method. Our approach is novel in quantifying and applying real-world spatial sampling biases to simulated data. Spatial bias in training data decreased species distribution model prediction performance, but sample size and the choice of modelling method were more important than spatial bias in determining the prediction performance of species distribution models.
