Molecular diameters of rarefied gases.

ABSTRACT: Molecular diameters are an important property of gases for numerous scientific and technical disciplines. Different measurement techniques for these diameters exist, each delivering a characteristic value. Their reliability in describing the flow of rarefied gases, however, has not yet been discussed, especially the case for the transitional range between continuum and ballistic flow. Here, we present a method to describe gas flows in straight channels with arbitrary cross sections for the whole Knudsen range by using a superposition model based on molecular diameters. This model allows us to determine a transition diameter from flow measurement data that paves the way for generalized calculations of gas behaviour under rarefied conditions linking continuum and free molecular regime.

Structure prediction and molecular simulation of gases diffusion pathways in hydrogenase.

Project description:Although hydrogen is considered to be one of the most promising future energy sources and the technical aspects involved in using it have advanced considerably, the future supply of hydrogen from renewable sources is still unsolved. The [Fe]- hydrogenase enzymes are highly efficient H(2) catalysts found in ecologically and phylogenetically diverse microorganisms, including the photosynthetic green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. While these enzymes can occur in several forms, H(2) catalysis takes place at a unique [FeS] prosthetic group or H-cluster, located at the active site. 3D structure of the protein hydA1 hydrogenase from Chlamydomonas reinhardtti was predicted using the MODELER 8v2 software. Conserved region was depicted from the NCBI CDD Search. Template selection was done on the basis NCBI BLAST results. For single template 1FEH was used and for multiple templates 1FEH and 1HFE were used. The result of the Homology modeling was verified by uploading the file to SAVS server. On the basis of the SAVS result 3D structure predicted using single template was chosen for performing molecular simulation. For performing molecular simulation three strategies were used. First the molecular simulation of the protein was performed in solvated box containing bulk water. Then 100 H(2) molecules were randomly inserted in the solvated box and two simulations of 50 and 100 ps were performed. Similarly 100 O(2) molecules were randomly placed in the solvated box and again 50 and 100 ps simulation were performed. Energy minimization was performed before each simulation was performed. Conformations were saved after each simulation. Analysis of the gas diffusion was done on the basis of RMSD, Radius of Gyration and no. of gas molecule/ps plot.

Quantitative study of the pyrolysis of levoglucosan to generate small molecular gases.

Project description:Biomass pyrolysis can be used to obtain clean fuels, such as liquids or gases, and is a promising approach to biomass energy utilization. Levoglucosan (LG) is an important product of biomass pyrolysis. The study of its thermal decomposition process is helpful for understanding the mechanisms underlying biomass pyrolysis. We investigated the decomposition of LG using a density functional theory method based on quantum mechanics. In this paper, we studied 23 possible reaction paths for LG pyrolysis to generate small molecular gases and 51 compounds (including reactants, intermediates, and products), and quantified the 47 transition states involved in the pathway. The optimal reaction path of CO2 is ring opening → decarboxylation, with an energy span of 301 kJ mol-1. The optimal reaction pathway for CO is dehydration → alcohol-ketone tautomerization → ring opening → decarbonylation, with an energy span of 286 kJ mol-1. Therefore, it is theoretically simpler to produce CO from LG than to generate CO2. Moreover, by analysing the dehydration reaction in the pathway, we observed that dehydration is beneficial to the production of CO by LG, but is not conducive to the formation of CO2.

From molecular spectra to a density shift in dense Rydberg gases.

Project description:In Rydberg atoms, at least one electron is excited to a state with a high principal quantum number. In an ultracold environment, this low-energy electron can scatter off a ground state atom allowing for the formation of a Rydberg molecule consisting of one Rydberg atom and several ground state atoms. Here we investigate those Rydberg molecules created by photoassociation for the spherically symmetric S-states. A step by step increase of the principal quantum number up to n=111 enables us to go beyond the previously observed dimer and trimer states up to a molecule, where four ground state atoms are bound by one Rydberg atom. The increase of bound atoms and the decreasing binding potential per atom with principal quantum number results finally in an overlap of spectral lines. The associated density-dependent line broadening sets a fundamental limit, for example, for the optical thickness per blockade volume in Rydberg quantum optics experiments.

Trapping gases in metal-organic frameworks with a selective surface molecular barrier layer.

Project description:The main challenge for gas storage and separation in nanoporous materials is that many molecules of interest adsorb too weakly to be effectively retained. Instead of synthetically modifying the internal surface structure of the entire bulk-as is typically done to enhance adsorption-here we show that post exposure of a prototypical porous metal-organic framework to ethylenediamine can effectively retain a variety of weakly adsorbing molecules (for example, CO, CO2, SO2, C2H4, NO) inside the materials by forming a monolayer-thick cap at the external surface of microcrystals. Furthermore, this capping mechanism, based on hydrogen bonding as explained by ab initio modelling, opens the door for potential selectivity. For example, water molecules are shown to disrupt the hydrogen-bonded amine network and diffuse through the cap without hindrance and fully displace/release the retained small molecules out of the metal-organic framework at room temperature. These findings may provide alternative strategies for gas storage, delivery and separation.

Molecular simulation of gases competitive adsorption in lignite and analysis of original CO desorption.

Project description:To study the adsorption characteristics of CO, CO2, N2, O2, and their binary-components in lignite coal, reveal the influence of CO2 or N2 injection and air leakage on the desorption of CO in goafs, a lignite model (C206H206N2O44) was established, and the supercell structure was optimized under temperatures of 288.15-318.15 K for molecular simulation. Based on molecular dynamics, the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo method was used to simulate the adsorption characteristics and the Langmuir equation was used to fit the adsorption isotherms of gases. The results show that for single-components, the order of adsorption capacity is CO2 > CO > O2 > N2. For binary-components, the competitive adsorption capacities of CO2 and CO are approximate. In the low-pressure zone, the competitive adsorption capacity of CO2 is stronger than that of CO, and the CO is stronger than N2 or O2. From the simulation, it can be seen that CO2, N2 or O2 will occupy adsorption sites, causing CO desorption. Therefore, to prevent the desorption of the original CO in the goaf, it is not suitable to use CO2 or N2 injection for fire prevention, and the air leakage at the working faces need to be controlled.

Exploring the Effects on Lipid Bilayer Induced by Noble Gases via Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Project description:Noble gases seem to have no significant effect on the anesthetic targets due to their simple, spherical shape. However, xenon has strong narcotic efficacy and can be used clinically, while other noble gases cannot. The mechanism remains unclear. Here, we performed molecular dynamics simulations on phospholipid bilayers with four kinds of noble gases to elucidate the difference of their effects on the membrane. Our results showed that the sequence of effects on membrane exerted by noble gases from weak to strong was Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe, the same order as their relative narcotic potencies as well as their lipid/water partition percentages. Compared with the other three kinds of noble gases, more xenon molecules were distributed between the lipid tails and headgroups, resulting in membrane's lateral expansion and lipid tail disorder. It may contribute to xenon's strong anesthetic potency. The results are well consistent with the membrane mediated mechanism of general anesthesia.

One-step removal of alkynes and propadiene from cracking gases using a multi-functional molecular separator.

Project description:Refineries generally employ multiple energy-intensive distillation/adsorption columns to separate and purify complicated chemical mixtures. Materials such as multi-functional molecular separators integrating various modules capable of separating molecules according to their shape and chemical properties simultaneously may represent an alternative. Herein, we address this challenge in the context of one-step removal of alkynes and propadiene from cracking gases (up to 10 components) using a multi-functional and responsive material ZU-33 through a guest/temperature dual-response regulation strategy. The responsive and guest-adaptive properties of ZU-33 provide the optimized binding energy for alkynes and propadiene, and avoid the competitive adsorption of olefins and paraffins, which is verified by breakthrough tests, single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, and simulation studies. The responsive properties to different stimuli endow materials with multiple regulation methods and broaden the boundaries of the applicability of porous materials to challenging separations.

Application of unmanned aerial system structure from motion point cloud detected tree heights and stem diameters to model missing stem diameters.

Project description:Monitoring of tree spatial arrangement is increasingly essential for restoration of dry conifer forests. The presented method was developed for high-density point clouds, like those from unmanned aerial system imagery, to extract and model individual tree location, height, and diameter at breast height (DBH). Extraction of tree locations and heights uses a variable window function searching point cloud-derived canopy height models. Tree DBH is extracted for a subset of point cloud trees using a slice at 1.32-1.42 m and a least-squares circle fitting algorithm. Extracted heights and DBHs are spatially matched and filtered against each tree's expected DBH predicted using a regional National Forest Inventory height to DBH relationship. Values remaining after filtering are used to create a site-specific height to DBH relationship for predicting missing DBH values. Applying the method in a ponderosa pine-dominated forest found that extracted height values exceeded the precision of field height measurement approaches, while the accuracy of extracted and modeled DBH values had a mean error of 0.79 cm.•Leveraging National Forest Inventory to filter DBH values eliminates the need for in situ observations.•Produces tree list for all extractable stems in the point cloud.•Transferable to high-density point clouds in open-canopy forests.

Thermoelectric properties of SnSe nanowires with different diameters.

Project description:Tin selenide (SnSe) has been the subject of great attention in the last years due to its highly efficient thermoelectricity and its possibilities as a green material, free of Pb and Te. Here, we report for the first time a thermoelectricity and transport study of individual SnSe micro- and nano-wires with diameters in the range between 130 nm and 1.15 μm. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirm an orthorhombic SnSe structure with Pnma (62) symmetry group and 1:1 Sn:Se atomic ratio. Electrical and thermal conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient were measured in each individual nanowire using a specialized suspended microdevice in the 150-370 K temperature range, yielding a thermal conductivity of 0.55 Wm-1 K-1 at room temperature and ZT ~ 0.156 at 370 K for the 130 nm diameter nanowire. The measured properties were correlated with electronic information obtained by model simulations and with phonon scattering analysis. The results confirm these structures as promising building blocks to develop efficient temperature sensors, refrigerators and thermoelectric energy converters. The thermoelectric response of the nanowires is compared with recent reports on crystalline, polycrystalline and layered bulk structures.

Tailoring the Diameters of Polyaniline Nanofibers for Sensor Application.

Project description:Size control has been successfully achieved in inorganic materials, but it still remains a challenge in organic polymers due to their polydispersity. We here report a facial approach to tailor the diameter of polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers in a range of 200-30 nm via temperature-controlled polymerization from room temperature to -192 °C. It is shown that the formation of PANI nanofibers was directed by the self-assembly of an amphiphilic aniline-glutamic acid complex, which formed micelles with different sizes at various temperatures during polymerization. The size-dependent properties of the resulting PANI nanofibers, such as molecular weights, optical properties, crystallinity, and electron conductivity, have been discussed. Most importantly, we showed a more than 3 magnitude increase in the conductivities of doped PANI nanofibers with a decrease in the diameter from 150 to 30 nm. A homemade sensing device was constructed, and it is shown that PANI nanofibers with smaller diameters exhibit a much faster response than those of larger-sized fibers or bulk PANIs due to their large surface area and high intrinsic conductivities.
