Terahertz Fingerprint of Monolayer Wigner Crystals.

ABSTRACT: The strong Coulomb interaction in monolayer semiconductors represents a unique opportunity for the realization of Wigner crystals without external magnetic fields. In this work, we predict that the formation of monolayer Wigner crystals can be detected by their terahertz response spectrum, which exhibits a characteristic sequence of internal optical transitions. We apply the density matrix formalism to derive the internal quantum structure and the optical conductivity of the Wigner crystal and to microscopically analyze the multipeak shape of the obtained terahertz spectrum. Moreover, we predict a characteristic shift of the peak position as a function of charge density for different atomically thin materials and show how our results can be generalized to an arbitrary two-dimensional system.

Melting of generalized Wigner crystals in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer Moire systems.

Project description:Moiré superlattice systems such as transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers have garnered significant recent interest due to their promising utility as tunable solid state simulators. Recent experiments on a WSe2/WS2 heterobilayer detected incompressible charge ordered states that one can view as generalized Wigner crystals. The tunability of the transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer Moiré system presents an opportunity to study the rich set of possible phases upon melting these charge-ordered states. Here we use Monte Carlo simulations to study these intermediate phases in between incompressible charge-ordered states in the strong coupling limit. We find two distinct stripe solid states to be each preceded by distinct types of nematic states. In particular, we discover microscopic mechanisms that stabilize each of the nematic states, whose order parameter transforms as the two-dimensional E representation of the Moiré lattice point group. Our results provide a testable experimental prediction of where both types of nematic occur, and elucidate the microscopic mechanism driving their formation.

Monolayer Graphene Terahertz Detector Integrated with Artificial Microstructure.

Project description:Graphene, known for its high carrier mobility and broad spectral response range, has proven to be a promising material in photodetection applications. However, its high dark current has limited its application as a high-sensitivity photodetector at room temperature, particularly for the detection of low-energy photons. Our research proposes a new approach for overcoming this challenge by designing lattice antennas with an asymmetric structure for use in combination with high-quality monolayers of graphene. This configuration is capable of sensitive detection of low-energy photons. The results show that the graphene terahertz detector-based microstructure antenna has a responsivity of 29 V·W-1 at 0.12 THz, a fast response time of 7 μs, and a noise equivalent power of less than 8.5 pW/Hz1/2. These results provide a new strategy for the development of graphene array-based room-temperature terahertz photodetectors.

Raman fingerprint for semi-metal WTe2 evolving from bulk to monolayer.

Project description:Tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), a layered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD), has recently demonstrated an extremely large magnetoresistance effect, which is unique among TMDs. This fascinating feature seems to be correlated with its special electronic structure. Here, we report the observation of 6 Raman peaks corresponding to the A2(4), A1(9), A1(8), A1(5), and A1(2) phonons, from the 33 Raman-active modes predicted for WTe2. This provides direct evidence to distinguish the space group of WTe2 from those of other TMDs. Moreover, the Raman evolution of WTe2 from bulk to monolayer is clearly revealed. It is interesting to find that the A2(4) mode, centered at ~109.8 cm(-1), is forbidden in a monolayer, which may be attributable to the transition of the point group from C2v (bulk) to C2h (monolayer). Our work characterizes all observed Raman peaks in the bulk and few-layer samples and provides a route to study the physical properties of two-dimensional WTe2.

Inhomogeneous phases in coupled electron-hole bilayer graphene sheets: Charge Density Waves and Coupled Wigner Crystals.

Project description:Recently proposed accurate correlation energies are used to determine the phase diagram of strongly coupled electron-hole graphene bilayers. The control parameters of the phase diagram are the charge carrier density and the insulating barrier thickness separating the bilayers. In addition to the electron-hole superfluid phase we find two new inhomogeneous ground states, a one dimensional charge density wave phase and a coupled electron-hole Wigner crystal. The elementary crystal structure of bilayer graphene plays no role in generating these new quantum phases, which are completely determined by the electrons and holes interacting through the Coulomb interaction. The experimental parameters for the new phases lie within attainable ranges and therefore coupled electron-hole bilayer graphene presents itself as an experimental system where novel emergent many-body phases can be realized.

Monolayer Organic Crystals for Ultrahigh Performance Molecular Diodes.

Project description:Molecular diodes are of considerable interest for the increasing technical demands of device miniaturization. However, the molecular diode performance remains contact-limited, which represents a major challenge for the advancement of rectification ratio and conductance. Here, it is demonstrated that high-quality ultrathin organic semiconductors can be grown on several classes of metal substrates via solution-shearing epitaxy, with a well-controlled number of layers and monolayer single crystal over 1 mm. The crystals are atomically smooth and pinhole-free, providing a native interface for high-performance monolayer molecular diodes. As a result, the monolayer molecular diodes show record-high rectification ratio up to 5 × 108 , ideality factor close to unity, aggressive unit conductance over 103 S cm-2 , ultrahigh breakdown electric field, excellent electrical stability, and well-defined contact interface. Large-area monolayer molecular diode arrays with 100% yield and excellent uniformity in the diode metrics are further fabricated. These results suggest that monolayer molecular crystals have great potential to build reliable, high-performance molecular diodes and deeply understand their intrinsic electronic behavior.

Terahertz Driven Reversible Topological Phase Transition of Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides.

Project description:This paper shows how terahertz light can drive ultrafast topological phase transitions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The phase transition is induced by the light interaction with both electron and phonon subsystems in the material. The mechanism of such a phase transition is formulated by thermodynamics theory: the Gibbs free energy landscape can be effectively modulated under light, and the relative stability between different (meta-)stable phases can be switched. This mechanism is applied to TMDs and reversible phase transitions between the topologically trivial 2H and nontrivial 1T' phases are predicted, providing appropriate light frequency, polarization, and intensity are applied. The large energy barrier on the martensitic transformation path can be significantly reduced, yielding a small energy barrier phase transition with fast kinetics. Compared with other phase transition schemes, light illumination has great advantages, such as its non-contact nature and easy tunability. The reversible topological phase transition can be applicable in high-resolution fast data storage and in-memory computing devices.

Methane-Mediated Vapor Transport Growth of Monolayer WSe2 Crystals.

Project description:The electrical and optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can be tuned by controlling their composition and the number of layers they have. Among various TMDs, the monolayer WSe2 has a direct bandgap of 1.65 eV and exhibits p-type or bipolar behavior, depending on the type of contact metal. Despite these promising properties, a lack of efficient large-area production methods for high-quality, uniform WSe2 hinders its practical device applications. Various methods have been investigated for the synthesis of large-area monolayer WSe2, but the difficulty of precisely controlling solid-state TMD precursors (WO3, MoO3, Se, and S powders) is a major obstacle to the synthesis of uniform TMD layers. In this work, we outline our success in growing large-area, high-quality, monolayered WSe2 by utilizing methane (CH4) gas with precisely controlled pressure as a promoter. When compared to the catalytic growth of monolayered WSe2 without a gas-phase promoter, the catalytic growth of the monolayered WSe2 with a CH4 promoter reduced the nucleation density to 1/1000 and increased the grain size of monolayer WSe2 up to 100 μm. The significant improvement in the optical properties of the resulting WSe2 indicates that CH4 is a suitable candidate as a promoter for the synthesis of TMD materials, because it allows accurate gas control.

PDielec: The calculation of infrared and terahertz absorption for powdered crystals.

Project description:The Python package PDielec is described, which calculates the infrared absorption characteristics of a crystalline material supported in a non-absorbing medium. PDielec post processes solid-state quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical calculations of the phonons and dielectric response of the crystalline material. Using an effective medium method, the package calculates the internal electric field arising from different particle morphologies and calculates the resulting shift in absorption frequency and intensity arising from the coupling between a phonon and the internal field. The theory of the approach is described, followed by a description of the implementation within PDielec. Finally, a section providing several examples of its application is given. © 2016 The Authors. Selective decoration of Au nanoparticles on monolayer MoS2 single crystals.

Project description:We report a controllable wet method for effective decoration of 2-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers with Au nanoparticles (NPs). Au NPs can be selectively formed on the edge sites or defective sites of MoS2 layers. The Au-MoS2 nano-composites are formed by non-covalent bond. The size distribution, morphology and density of the metal nanoparticles can be tuned by changing the defect density in MoS2 layers. Field effect transistors were directly fabricated by placing ion gel gate dielectrics on Au-decorated MoS2 layers without the need to transfer these MoS2 layers to SiO2/Si substrates for bottom gate devices. The ion gel method allows probing the intrinsic electrical properties of the as-grown and Au-decorated MoS2 layers. This study shows that Au NPs impose remarkable p-doping effects to the MoS2 transistors without degrading their electrical characteristics.

Raman fingerprint of two terahertz spin wave branches in a two-dimensional honeycomb Ising ferromagnet.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism has been long sought-after and only very recently realized in atomic crystals of magnetic van der Waals materials. So far, a comprehensive understanding of the magnetic excitations in such 2D magnets remains missing. Here we report polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy studies on a 2D honeycomb ferromagnet CrI3. We show the definitive evidence of two sets of zero-momentum spin waves at frequencies of 2.28 terahertz (THz) and 3.75 THz, respectively, that are three orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional ferromagnets. By tracking the thickness dependence of both spin waves, we reveal that both are surface spin waves with lifetimes an order of magnitude longer than their temporal periods. Our results of two branches of high-frequency, long-lived surface spin waves in 2D CrI3 demonstrate intriguing spin dynamics and intricate interplay with fluctuations in the 2D limit, thus opening up opportunities for ultrafast spintronics incorporating 2D magnets.
