Ionic heat dissipation in solid-state pores.

ABSTRACT: Energy dissipation in solid-state nanopores is an important issue for their use as a sensor for detecting and analyzing individual objects in electrolyte solution by ionic current measurements. Here, we report on evaluations of heating via diffusive ion transport in the nanoscale conduits using thermocouple-embedded SiN_x pores. We found a linear rise in the nanopore temperature with the input electrical power suggestive of steady-state ionic heat dissipation in the confined nanospace. Meanwhile, the heating efficiency was elucidated to become higher in a smaller pore due to a rapid decrease in the through-water thermal conduction for cooling the fluidic channel. The scaling law suggested nonnegligible influence of the heating to raise the temperature of single-nanometer two-dimensional nanopores by a few kelvins under the standard cross-membrane voltage and ionic strength conditions. The present findings may be useful in advancing our understanding of ion and mass transport phenomena in nanopores.

A Super-Ionic Solid-State Block Copolymer Electrolyte.

Project description:Polymer solid-state electrolytes offer great promise for battery materials with high energy density, mechanical stability, and improved safety. However, their low ion conductivities have so far limited their potential applications. Here, it is shown for poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers that the super-stoichiometric addition of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) as lithium salt leads to the formation of a crystalline PEO block copolymer phase with exceptionally high ion conductivities and low activation energies. The addition of LiTFSI further induces block copolymer phase transitions into bi-continuous Fddd and gyroid network morphologies, providing continuous 3D conduction pathways. Both effects lead to solid-state block copolymer electrolyte membranes with ion conductivities of up to 1·10-1 S cm-1 at 90 °C, decreasing only moderately to 4·10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature, and to >1·10-3 S cm-1 at -20 °C, corresponding to activation energies as low as 0.19 eV. The co-crystallization of PEO and LiTFSI with ether and carbonate solvents is observed to play a key role to realize a super-ionic conduction mechanism. The discovery of PEO super-ionic conductivity at high lithium concentrations opens a new pathway for fabrication of solid polymer electrolyte membranes with sufficiently high ion conductivities over a broad temperature range with widespread applications in electrical devices.

Ionic decision-maker created as novel, solid-state devices.

Project description:Decision-making is being performed frequently in areas of computation to obtain better performance in a wide variety of current intelligent activities. In practical terms, this decision-making must adapt to dynamic changes in environmental conditions. However, because of limited computational resources, adaptive decision-making is generally difficult to achieve using conventional computers. The ionic decision-maker reported here, which uses electrochemical phenomena, has excellent dynamic adaptabilities, as demonstrated by its ability to solve multiarmed bandit problems (MBPs) in which a gambler given a choice of slot machines must select the appropriate machines to play so as to maximize the total reward in a series of trials. Furthermore, our ionic decision-maker successfully solves dynamic competitive MBPs, which cause serious loss due to the collision of selfish users in communication networks. The technique used in our devices offers a shift toward decision-making using the motion of ions, an approach that could find myriad applications in computer science and technology, including artificial intelligence.

How Concerted Are Ionic Hops in Inorganic Solid-State Electrolytes?

Project description:Despite being fundamental to the understanding of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), little is known on the degree of coordination between mobile ions in diffusive events, thus hindering a detailed comprehension and possible rational design of SSEs. Here, we introduce an unsupervised k-means clustering approach that is able to identify ion-hopping events and correlations between many mobile ions and apply it to a comprehensive ab initio MD database comprising several families of inorganic SSEs and millions of ionic configurations. It is found that despite two-body interactions between mobile ions being the largest, higher-order n-ion (2 < n) correlations are most frequent. Specifically, we prove a general exponential decaying law for the probability density function governing the number of concerted mobile ions. For the particular case of Li-based SSEs, it is shown that the average number of correlated mobile ions amounts to 10 ± 5 and that this result is practically independent of the temperature. Interestingly, our data-driven analysis reveals that fast-ionic diffusion strongly and positively correlates with ample hopping lengths and long hopping spans but not with high hopping frequencies and short interstitial residence times. Finally, it is shown that neglection of many-ion correlations generally leads to a modest overestimation of the hopping frequency that roughly is proportional to the average number of correlated mobile ions.

Molecular magneto-ionic proton sensor in solid-state proton battery.

Project description:High proton conductivity originated from its small size and the diffusion-free Grotthuss mechanism offers immense promise for proton-based magneto-ionic control of magnetic materials. Despite such promise, the realization of proton magneto-ionics is hampered by the lack of proton-responsive magnets as well as the solid-state sensing method. Here, we report the proton-based magneto-ionics in molecule-based magnet which serves as both solid-state proton battery electrode and radiofrequency sensing medium. The three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network in such a molecule-based magnet yields a high proton conductivity of 1.6 × 10-3 S cm-1. The three-dimensional printed vascular hydrogel provides the on-demand proton stimulus to enable magneto-ionics, where the Raman spectroscopy shows the redox behavior responsible for the magnetism control. The radiofrequency proton sensor shows high sensitivity in a wide proton concentration range from 10-6 to 1 molar under a low working radiofrequency and magnetic field of 1 GHz and 405 Oe, respectively. The findings shown here demonstrate the promising sensing application of proton-based magneto-ionics.

Flexible solid-liquid bi-continuous electrically and thermally conductive nanocomposite for electromagnetic interference shielding and heat dissipation.

Project description:In the era of 5 G, the rise in power density in miniaturized, flexible electronic devices has created an urgent need for thin, flexible, polymer-based electrically and thermally conductive nanocomposites to address challenges related to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and heat accumulation. However, the difficulties in establishing enduring and continuous transfer pathways for electrons and phonons using solid-rigid conductive fillers within insulative polymer matrices limit the development of such nanocomposites. Herein, we incorporate MXene-bridging-liquid metal (MBLM) solid-liquid bi-continuous electrical-thermal conductive networks within aramid nanofiber/polyvinyl alcohol (AP) matrices, resulting in the AP/MBLM nanocomposite with ultra-high electrical conductivity (3984 S/cm) and distinguished thermal conductivity of 13.17 W m-1 K-1. This nanocomposite exhibits excellent EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of 74.6 dB at a minimal thickness of 22 μm, and maintains high EMI shielding stability after enduring various harsh conditions. Meanwhile, the AP/MBLM nanocomposite also demonstrates promising heat dissipation behavior. This work expands the concept of creating thin films with high electrical and thermal conductivity.

DNA sequence-dependent ionic currents in ultra-small solid-state nanopores.

Project description:Measurements of ionic currents through nanopores partially blocked by DNA have emerged as a powerful method for characterization of the DNA nucleotide sequence. Although the effect of the nucleotide sequence on the nanopore blockade current has been experimentally demonstrated, prediction and interpretation of such measurements remain a formidable challenge. Using atomic resolution computational approaches, here we show how the sequence, molecular conformation, and pore geometry affect the blockade ionic current in model solid-state nanopores. We demonstrate that the blockade current from a DNA molecule is determined by the chemical identities and conformations of at least three consecutive nucleotides. We find the blockade currents produced by the nucleotide triplets to vary considerably with their nucleotide sequences despite having nearly identical molecular conformations. Encouragingly, we find blockade current differences as large as 25% for single-base substitutions in ultra small (1.6 nm × 1.1 nm cross section; 2 nm length) solid-state nanopores. Despite the complex dependence of the blockade current on the sequence and conformation of the DNA triplets, we find that, under many conditions, the number of thymine bases is positively correlated with the current, whereas the number of purine bases and the presence of both purines and pyrimidines in the triplet are negatively correlated with the current. Based on these observations, we construct a simple theoretical model that relates the ion current to the base content of a solid-state nanopore. Furthermore, we show that compact conformations of DNA in narrow pores provide the greatest signal-to-noise ratio for single base detection, whereas reduction of the nanopore length increases the ionic current noise. Thus, the sequence dependence of the nanopore blockade current can be theoretically rationalized, although the predictions will likely need to be customized for each nanopore type.

Heat management strategies for solid-state NMR of functional proteins.

Project description:Modern solid-state NMR methods can acquire high-resolution protein spectra for structure determination. However, these methods use rapid sample spinning and intense decoupling fields that can heat and denature the protein being studied. Here we present a strategy to avoid destroying valuable samples. We advocate first creating a sacrificial sample, which contains unlabeled protein (or no protein) in buffer conditions similar to the intended sample. This sample is then doped with the chemical shift thermometer Sm2Sn2O7. We introduce a pulse scheme called TCUP (for Temperature Calibration Under Pulseload) that can characterize the heating of this sacrificial sample rapidly, under a variety of experimental conditions, and with high temporal resolution. Sample heating is discussed with respect to different instrumental variables such as spinning speed, decoupling strength and duration, and cooling gas flow rate. The effects of different sample preparation variables are also discussed, including ionic strength, the inclusion of cryoprotectants, and the physical state of the sample (i.e. liquid, solid, or slurry). Lastly, we discuss probe detuning as a measure of sample thawing that does not require retuning the probe or using chemical shift thermometer compounds. Use of detuning tests and chemical shift thermometers with representative sample conditions makes it possible to maximize the efficiency of the NMR experiment while retaining a functional sample.

Fast and Deterministic Fabrication of Sub-5 Nanometer Solid-State Pores by Feedback-Controlled Laser Processing.

Project description:Nanopores are single-molecule sensors capable of detecting and quantifying a broad range of unlabeled biomolecules including DNA and proteins. Nanopores' generic sensing principle has permitted the development of a vast range of biomolecular applications in genomics and proteomics, including single-molecule DNA sequencing and protein fingerprinting. Owing to their superior mechanical and electrical stability, many of the recent studies involved synthetic nanopores fabricated in thin solid-state membranes such as freestanding silicon nitride. However, to date, one of the bottlenecks in this field is the availability of a fast, reliable, and deterministic fabrication method capable of repeatedly forming small nanopores (i.e., sub 5 nm) in situ. Recently, it was demonstrated that a tightly focused laser beam can induce controlled etching of silicon nitride membranes suspended in buffered aqueous solutions. Herein, we demonstrate that nanopore laser drilling (LD) can produce nanopores deterministically to a prespecified size without user intervention. By optimizing the optical apparatus, and by designing a multistep control algorithm for the LD process, we demonstrate a fully automatic fabrication method for any user-defined nanopore size within minutes. The LD process results in a double bowl-shaped structure having a typical size of the laser point-spread function (PSF) at its openings. Numerical simulations of the characteristic LD nanopore shape provide conductance curves that fit the experimental result and support the idea that the pore is produced at the thinnest area formed by the back-to-back facings bowls. The presented LD fabrication method significantly enhances nanopore fabrication throughput and accuracy and hence can be adopted for a large range of biomolecular sensing applications.

In Situ Construction of Elastic Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte with Fast Ionic Transport for Dendrite-Free Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been extensively investigated owing to their safer and higher energy density. In this work, we prepared a novel elastic solid-state polymer electrolyte based on an in situ-formed elastomer polymer matrix with ion-conductive plasticizer crystal embedded with Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles, denoted as LZT/SN-SPE. The unique structure of LZT/SN-SPE shows excellent elasticity and flexibility, good electrochemical oxidation tolerance, high ionic conductivity, and high Li+ transference number. The role of LLZTO filler in suppressing the side reactions between succinonitrile (SN) and the lithium metal anode and propelling the Li+ diffusion kinetics can be affirmed. The Li symmetric cells with LZT/SN-SPE cycled stably over 1100 h under a current density of 5 mA cm-2, and Li||LiFePO4 cells realized an excellent rate (92.40 mAh g-1 at 5 C) and long-term cycling performance (98.6% retention after 420 cycles at 1 C). Hence, it can provide a promising strategy for achieving high energy density solid-state LMBs.

Structure-Property Relationship of Polymerized Ionic Liquids for Solid-State Electrolyte Membranes.

Project description:Eight new polymerized ammonium-based ionic liquids were prepared as thin membrane films and evaluated within the scope of their usage in lithium-ion batteries. The focus of this work is to get a better understanding of the influence of structural modifications of the monomers on the polymerized materials. Further, different concentrations of a lithium-ion conducting salt were applied in order to receive an optimized combination of monomer structure and lithium salt concentration. It was found that an increased side chain length of the studied ammonium-based polymerized ionic liquids leads to a reduction in glass transition temperatures and increased ionic conductivity values. As a result of the addition of conducting salt to the PIL membranes, the glass transition temperatures and the ionic conductivity values decreases. Nevertheless, PFG-NMR reveals a higher lithium-ion mobility for a sample with higher conducting salt content.
