The JNU-IFM dataset for segmenting pubic symphysis-fetal head.

ABSTRACT: The use of transperineal ultrasound techniques for the assessment of fetal head descent and progression is an adjunct to clinical examination. Automatic identification of parameters based on ultrasound images will greatly reduce the subjectivity and non-repeatability of the clinician's judgment. However, the lack of a pubic symphysis-fetal head dataset hinders the development of algorithms. Here, we present an intrapartum transperineal ultrasound dataset of the Intelligent Fetal Monitoring Lab of Jinan University (named the JNU-IFM dataset), in which intrapartum transperineal ultrasound videos of 78 were recorded from 51 patients. These data were obtained with the Youkey D8 wireless 2D ultrasound probe with its corresponding supporting software by Wuhan Youkey Bio-Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., Wuhan, China. In these videos, 6224 high-quality images with four categories were selected to form the JNU- IFM dataset. These images were labelled using the Pair software and then validated by two experienced radiologists. We hope that this data set can be used in the segmentation of the pubic symphysis-fetal head.

Project description:IntroductionDiastasis of the pubic symphysis has been reported to occur in 13-16% of pelvic ring injuries. In Asians, there are only a few data showing the width of the pubic symphysis. The aim of this study is to see the width of pubic symphysis relating to age and sex in Koreans.MethodsWidth of pubic symphysis was measured in pelvis AP and pelvic CT of 784 peoples (392 males, 392 females).ResultsIn supine AP, the width at the upper end was 4.8±2.5 mm (males; 3.46±1.38 mm, females; 4.04±2.76 mm). The width at the midpoint was 4.7±2.0 mm (males; 4.64±1.58 mm, females; 4.75±2.29 mm). The width at the lower end was 4.8±2.5 mm (males; 4.58±2.19 mm, females; 5.08±2.76 mm). In abducted AP, the width at the upper end was 3.8±2.9 mm (males; 3.65±1.50 mm, females; 3.97±3.85 mm). The width at the midpoint was 4.6±2.3 mm (males; 4.45±2.16 mm, females; 5.18±3.79 mm). The width at the lower end was 4.8±3.1 mm (males; 4.55±1.30 mm, females; 4.74±3.06 mm). In axial CT, the width at the anterior border was 15.0±6.2 mm (males; 14.50±6.62 mm, females; 16.44±6.22 mm). Project description:BackgroundA congenital prepubic sinus (CPS) is a rare congenital anomaly in which a duct remnant extends from the skin opening near the pubic symphysis to various parts and the lesions are mostly located in the preperitoneal space. The totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approach is an operational method that provides a good field of view for the preperitoneal space. We report the CPS through the pubic symphysis in which complete resection was achieved by a TEP approach. TEP approach was minimally invasive and achieved satisfactory cosmetic outcome.Case presentationWe herein report the case of a 13-year-old boy with a fistula opening near the dorsal penis. He was admitted to our hospital due to fever and lower abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed an abscess inside a fistula lumen on the posterior surface of the rectus abdominis muscles in the midline of the lower abdomen. Under a diagnosis of CPS, which was located in the preperitoneal space, endoscopic resection was performed by a totally extraperitoneal approach. After making an umbilical incision, the rectus abdominis muscle was excised outward to expose the preperitoneal space. A single-port system was placed in the preperitoneal space. Three 5-mm-port trocars were inserted. As the preperitoneal cavity was expanded, a sinus connecting to the pubic symphysis was confirmed. The pubic symphysis did not connect with the bladder. Because the fistula was penetrated with the pubic symphysis, the remaining caudal fistula was removed from the body surface with a small spindle-shaped incision around the fistula opening. Finally, the sinus was completely resected, with confirmation from both the cranial side and dorsal side of the pubic symphysis. We were able to perform complete resection of the CPS with good visibility and without any peritoneal damage. There were no intraoperative complications. His postoperative course was uneventful during the 1-year follow-up.ConclusionsThe TEP approach may be feasible for the resection of a CPS and may allow safe and secure resection due to good visibility, even in pediatric patients.
