Project description:Most land surface system models and observational assessments ignore detailed soil characteristics while describing the drought attributes such as growth, duration, recovery, and the termination rate of the event. With the national-scale digital soil maps available for India, we assessed the climate-catchment-soil nexus using daily observed streamflow records from 98 sites in tropical rain-dominated catchments of peninsular India (8-25° N, 72-86° E). Results indicated that climate-catchment-soil properties may control hydrological drought attributes to the tune of 14-70%. While terrain features are dominant drivers for drought growth, contributing around 50% variability, soil attributes contribute ~ 71.5% variability in drought duration. Finally, soil and climatic factors together control the resilience and termination rate. The most relevant climate characteristics are potential evapotranspiration, soil moisture, rainfall, and temperature; temperature and soil moisture are dominant controls for streamflow drought resilience. Among different soil properties, soil organic carbon (SOC) stock could resist drought propagation, despite low-carbon soils across the Indian subcontinent. The findings highlight the need for accounting feedback among climate, soil, and topographical properties in catchment-scale drought propagations.

Project description:Climate change is a significant driver of water resource availability, affecting the magnitude of surface runoff, aquifer recharge, and river flows. This study investigated the impact of climate change on hydrological processes within the Gilgel Gibe catchment and aimed to determine the level of exposure of water resources to these changes, which is essential for future adaptability planning. To achieve this objective, an ensemble mean of six regional climate models (RCMs) from the coordinated regional climate downscaling experiment (CORDEX)-Africa was used to simulate future climatic scenarios. The RCMs outputs were then bias corrected using distribution mapping to match observed precipitation and temperature. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to assess the hydrological impacts of climate change on the catchment. The results indicated that the ensemble mean of the six RCMs projects a decline in precipitation and an increase in temperature under both the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 representative concentration pathways. Moreover, the increases in both maximum and minimum temperatures are higher for higher emission scenarios, indicating that RCP8.5 is warmer than RCP4.5. The projected climate change shows a decrease in surface runoff, groundwater, and water yield, resulting in an overall decline of annual flow. This decline is mainly due to the reduction in seasonal flows driven by climate change scenarios. The changes in precipitation range from -11.2% to -14.3% under RCP4.5 and from -9.2% to -10.0% under RCP8.5, while the changes in temperature range from 1.7°C to 2.5°C under RCP4.5 and from 1.8°C to 3.6°C under RCP8.5. These changes could lead to reduced water availability for crop production, which could be a chronic issue for subsistence agriculture. Additionally, the reduction of surface water and groundwater could further exacerbate water stress in the downstream areas, affecting the availability of water resources in the catchment. Furthermore, the increasing demands for water, driven by population growth and socioeconomic progress, along with the variability in temperature and evaporation demands, will amplify prolonged water scarcity. Therefore, robust climate-resilient water management policies are indispensable to manage these risks. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering the impact of climate change on hydrological processes and the need for proactive adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change on water resources.

Project description:Climate change and human activities have a strong impact on lakes and their catchments, so to understand ongoing processes it is fundamental to monitor environmental variables with a spatially well-distributed and high frequency network and efficiently share data. An effective sharing and interoperability of environmental information between technician and end-user fosters an in-depth knowledge of the territory and its critical environmental issues. In this paper, we present the approaches and the results obtained during the PITAGORA project (Interoperable Technological Platform for Acquisition, Management and Organization of Environmental data, related to the lake basin). PITAGORA was aimed at developing both instruments and data management, including pre-processing and quality control of raw data to ensure that data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR principles). The main results show that the developed instrumentation is low-cost, easily implementable and reliable, and can be applied to the measurement of diverse environmental parameters such as meteorological, hydrological, physico-chemical, and geological. The flexibility of the solutions proposed make our system adaptable to different monitoring purposes, research, management, and civil protection. The real time access to environmental information can improve management of a territory and ecosystems, safety of the population, and sustainable socio-economic development.

Project description:Droughts that exceed the magnitudes of historical variation ranges could occur increasingly frequently under future climate conditions. However, the time of the emergence of unprecedented drought conditions under climate change has rarely been examined. Here, using multimodel hydrological simulations, we investigate the changes in the frequency of hydrological drought (defined as abnormally low river discharge) under high and low greenhouse gas concentration scenarios and existing water resource management measures and estimate the time of the first emergence of unprecedented regional drought conditions centered on the low-flow season. The times are detected for several subcontinental-scale regions, and three regions, namely, Southwestern South America, Mediterranean Europe, and Northern Africa, exhibit particularly robust results under the high-emission scenario. These three regions are expected to confront unprecedented conditions within the next 30 years with a high likelihood regardless of the emission scenarios. In addition, the results obtained herein demonstrate the benefits of the lower-emission pathway in reducing the likelihood of emergence. The Paris Agreement goals are shown to be effective in reducing the likelihood to the unlikely level in most regions. However, appropriate and prior adaptation measures are considered indispensable when facing unprecedented drought conditions. The results of this study underscore the importance of improving drought preparedness within the considered time horizons.

Project description:We computationally explore the relationship between surface-subsurface exchange and hydrological response in a headwater-dominated high elevation, mountainous catchment in East River Watershed, Colorado, USA. In order to isolate the effect of surface-subsurface exchange on the hydrological response, we compare three model variations that differ only in soil permeability. Traditional methods of hydrograph analysis that have been developed for headwater catchments may fail to properly characterize catchments, where catchment response is tightly coupled to headwater inflow. Analyzing the spatially distributed hydrological response of such catchments gives additional information on the catchment functioning. Thus, we compute hydrographs, hydrological indices, and spatio-temporal distributions of hydrological variables. The indices and distributions are then linked to the hydrograph at the outlet of the catchment. Our results show that changes in the surface-subsurface exchange fluxes trigger different flow regimes, connectivity dynamics, and runoff generation mechanisms inside the catchment, and hence, affect the distributed hydrological response. Further, changes in surface-subsurface exchange rates lead to a nonlinear change in the degree of connectivity-quantified through the number of disconnected clusters of ponding water-in the catchment. Although the runoff formation in the catchment changes significantly, these changes do not significantly alter the aggregated streamflow hydrograph. This hints at a crucial gap in our ability to infer catchment function from aggregated signatures. We show that while these changes in distributed hydrological response may not always be observable through aggregated hydrological signatures, they can be quantified through the use of indices of connectivity.

Project description:IntroductionUnderstanding the stress recovery of trees, particularly with respect to increasing droughts due to climate change, is crucial. An often-overlooked aspect is how short versus long drought events of high intensity (i.e., low and high stress dose) result in stress damage and affect post-stress recovery.MethodsThis study examines the stress and recovery dynamics of 3-year-old Picea abies following a short drought (n = 5) of 18 days or a long drought (n = 9) of 51 days during late summer. We particularly assessed how the recovery of canopy conductance and tree transpiration is linked to i) stress intensity in terms of minimum water potential, ii) stress duration inferred by days below a water potential related to 12% hydraulic conductance loss (dP12), iii) stress dose inferred by the cumulative tree water deficit on days below P12 (TWDP12) as well as the cumulative water potential (Ψcum), and iv) the percent loss of conductive xylem area (PLA).ResultsBoth drought treatments resulted in stem and root embolism with a higher PLA of 49% ± 10% in the long drought treatment compared to 18% ± 6% in the short drought treatment consistent across the measured plant parts. Suffering from embolism and leaf shedding (long drought, 32%; short drought, 12%), canopy conductance in the long drought treatment recovered to 41% ± 3% of the control and in the short drought treatment to 66% ± 4% at 12 days after drought release. These recovery rates were well explained by the observed PLA (R2 = 0.66) and the dP12 (R2 = 0.62) but best explained by stress dose metrics, particularly the cumulative TWDP12 (R2 = 0.88).DiscussionOur study highlights that stress duration and intensity should be integrated to assess post-stress recovery rates. Here, the tree water deficit derived from point dendrometers appears promising, as it provides a non-destructive and high temporal resolution of the stress dose.

Project description:Global climate models suggest an increase in evapotranspiration, changing storm tracks, and moisture delivery in many parts of the world, which are likely to cause more prolonged and severe drought, yet the weakness of climate models in modeling persistence of hydroclimatic variables and the uncertainties associated with regional climate projections mean that impact assessments based on climate model output may underestimate the risk of multiyear droughts. In this paper, we propose a vulnerability-based approach to test water resource system response to drought. We generate a large number of synthetic streamflow series with different drought durations and deficits and use them as input to a water resource system model. Marginal distributions of the streamflow for each month are generated by bootstrapping the historical data, while the joint probability distributions of consecutive months are constructed using a copula-based method. Droughts with longer durations and larger deficits than the observed record are generated by perturbing the copula parameter and by adopting an importance sampling strategy for low flows. In this way, potential climate-induced changes in monthly hydrological persistence are factored into the vulnerability analysis. The method is applied to the London water system (England) to investigate under which drought conditions severe water use restrictions would need to be imposed. Results indicate that the water system is vulnerable to drought conditions outside the range of historical events. The vulnerability assessment results were coupled with climate model information to compare alternative water management options with respect to their vulnerability to increasingly long and severe drought.

Project description:During the Roman domain of the Iberian Peninsula (from 201 BCE to 460 CE) water management infrastructures were built to satisfy high water demand. However, whether the Roman activities affected the hydrological balance of Iberian wetlands remains unclear. Here, we investigate the paleo-hydrology of Lake Zóñar (southern Iberia) by using the stable isotopes (16O, 17O, 18O, 1H and 2H) of its gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) sediments and reconstruct the isotopic composition of the lake water during Roman times. A period of recurrent lake low stand occurred between 2120 and 1890 cal. yr BP (ca. 170 BCE to 60 CE), coinciding with a relatively dry climate stage recorded by most regional paleoclimate archives. The stable isotopes and hydrochemistry of the lake water during gypsum precipitation are consistent with a shallow saline lake that evaporated under relative humidity ~ 10% lower than the present annual mean and at least 20% less rainfall amount. Our analytical and archeological findings support lake level lowering during the Roman period was probably caused by combined arid climate conditions and diversion of the inlets feeding the lake. Spring capturing was likely necessary to satisfy the high water demand of nearby Roman settlements, in the framework of a period of persistent droughts.

Project description:Drought is one of the most ecologically and economically devastating natural phenomena affecting the United States, causing the U.S. economy billions of dollars in damage, and driving widespread degradation of ecosystem health. Many drought indices are implemented to monitor the current extent and status of drought so stakeholders such as farmers and local governments can appropriately respond. Methods to forecast drought conditions weeks to months in advance are less common but would provide a more effective early warning system to enhance drought response, mitigation, and adaptation planning. To resolve this issue, we introduce DroughtCast, a machine learning framework for forecasting the United States Drought Monitor (USDM). DroughtCast operates on the knowledge that recent anomalies in hydrology and meteorology drive future changes in drought conditions. We use simulated meteorology and satellite observed soil moisture as inputs into a recurrent neural network to accurately forecast the USDM between 1 and 12 weeks into the future. Our analysis shows that precipitation, soil moisture, and temperature are the most important input variables when forecasting future drought conditions. Additionally, a case study of the 2017 Northern Plains Flash Drought shows that DroughtCast was able to forecast a very extreme drought event up to 12 weeks before its onset. Given the favorable forecasting skill of the model, DroughtCast may provide a promising tool for land managers and local governments in preparing for and mitigating the effects of drought.

Project description:Kenya's catchments has both natural and disturbed environments. Within these environments, there has been interaction between hydrological, physical and ecological characteristics. Therefore, impacts of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) change on surface and sub - surface hydrology needs to be well understood due to the increasing population competing for scarce natural resources such as water, trees and forest land. The water balance components' spatial and temporal dynamics in relationship to the LULC change between 2003 and 2018 in the Lower Nzoia Sub - Catchment (LNSC) in Kenya was therefore assessed. Landsat data with 30 m (m) spatial resolution was used in understanding LULC dynamics of the study area using Supervised Classification Approach (Interactive Classification Method) in ArcGIS 10.5. After landsat image classification, key water balance components including; surface runoff (SURFQ), lateral flow (LATQ), groundwater recharge (BASEQ), deep acquifer recharge (DEEPQ), evapotranspiration (ET) and groundwater revap (REVAP) for years 2003 and 2018 were estimated using SWAT model in ArcSWAT. The overall accuracies for 2003 and 2018 classified images were 75.9% and 98.9% respectively which are showing good values. The results of the study showed that agricultural land coverage reduced from 83.1% in 2003 to 78.6% in 2018. Rangeland on the hand increased from 6.3% to 9.8% while urban/built - up area increasing from 10.6% to 11.6%. The annual water balance components from the LULC distribution of the two time periods shows that ET reduced, SURFQ increased, BASEQ reduced, DEEPQ reduced, LATQ reduced and REVAP reduced. At catchment level, results show that 2018 had a higher water balance than 2003 which can partly be explained by land cover decrease. The relationship between rainfall distribution, Land Surface Temperature (LST) and LULC change were further compared. At the same time, the study found out that there is limited focus to date on rural communities climate adaptive capacity. Hence, water institutions in the sub - catchment such as Water Resources Authority (WRA) are yet to fully mainstream adaptive capacity into their organizational structure and policies.
