COVID-19 And the african financial markets : Less infection, less economic impact ?

ABSTRACT: Has the relatively low number of COVID-19 cases and deaths saved Africa from the disease's economic and financial consequences ? This article assesses the impact of the pandemic on the volatility of major African stock markets using a panel data model. Like other financial markets worldwide, Africa's have been characterised by increased volatility during the pandemic. The markets appear to respond to the external shocks caused by the health crisis, and Google search volume activity related to the COVID-19 virus, which is treated here as a proxy for panic and fear, is associated with an increase in market volatility of around 7%. For health data, only increases in confirmed cases appear to impact the stability of African markets, and the relatively low fatality rate has had no influence on market dynamics. However, Political responses are associated with a drop in volatility, while the fear of global financial markets exacerbates it. These results have several implications in terms of risk management.

Project description:In this data article, a collection of 11,625,887 tweets on the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic are provided. The data from Twitter were collected through Twitter API from January 2020 to June 2020. In addition, we also provided subsets of tweets containing discourses on both COVID-19 and financial topics. In order to facilitate the research on sentiment analysis, the Sentiment140 dataset containing 1,600,000 tweets that were annotated as positive or negative sentiment was also provided (Go et al., 2009) We used Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) algorithm to transform documents to numeric vectors and used logistic regression classifier to train and predict sentiments of tweets. These datasets may garner interest from data science, economists, social science, natural language processing, epidemiology, and public health groups.

Post COVID-19 exit strategies and emerging markets economic challenges.

Project description:We study emerging markets' 1980s lost growth decade, triggered by the massive reversal of the snowball effect in the US during 1974-1984, finding that higher flow costs of servicing debt overhang explain the dramatic decline in growth rates of exposed emerging markets. We also show how lowering the US cost of servicing its public debt has been associated with higher US, Japan, and Western Europe real output growth rates during the post WWII recovery decades, 1946-1956, and validate that fiscal adjustments of large countries have strong growth and volatility spillovers effects on exposed emerging markets and developing countries.

Google search volumes and the financial markets during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Project description:During the outbreak of the COVID-19, concerns related to the severity of the pandemic have played a prominent role in investment decisions. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between public attention and the financial markets using search engine data from Google Trends. Our findings show that search query volumes in Italy, Germany, France, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States are connected with stock markets. The Italian Google Trends index is found to be the main driver of all the considered markets. Furthermore, the country-specific market impacts of COVID-19-related concerns closely follow the Italian lockdown process.

Do retail traders destabilize financial markets? An investigation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:Existing research suggests that retail trading is associated with volatility in financial markets. To extend the literature, we study the dynamic effects of retail trading on volatility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using marketable retail trades identified from the Boehmer et al. (2021) algorithm and novel empirical methods discussed in Jordá (2005), we document a negative, persistent impact of retail trading on the stability of stock prices that is particularly stronger during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period. These results highlight how periods of crises - like the pandemic - affect the destabilizing influence of retail trading. To provide additional evidence, we replicate our empirical exercise during the 2008-09 financial crisis. Consistent with the COVID-19 period, we again find that retail trading leads to more volatility during the financial crisis vis-á-vis the pre-crisis period. These results again support the idea that periods of crises strengthen the link between retail trading and volatility.

Covid-19 pandemic and spillover effects in stock markets: A financial network approach

Project description:This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 51 major stock markets, both emerging and developed. We isolated the countries susceptible to shock transmissions, and evaluated countries with immunity, during the lockdown. Specifically, using dependence dynamics and network analysis on a bivariate basis, we identify volatility and contagion risk among stock markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical findings add to the existing body of literature, given that previous work has not placed emphasis on network topologic metrics when it comes to financial networks, specifically during the COVID-19. The evidence shows instant financial contagion a result of the lockdown and the spread of the novel coronavirus. The methodological framework outlines important information for investors and policymakers on using financial networks to improve portfolio selection, by placing an emphasis on assets according to centrality.

Reported corporate misconducts: The impact on the financial markets.

Project description:This study empirically examines how reported corporate misconducts affect the stock returns of US firms. As the reported misconducts are broadcasted in the newspaper outlets, the cumulative abnormal return (CAR) is -4.1%. Involvement in a reported corporate misconduct gets punished by market participants especially when the act of reported misconduct is blamed on the level of the corporation rather than in involvement of a specific individual, when reported misconducts take place in the home market, and when the linguistic tone used in the newspaper article is negative. Financial penalties imposed, firm size, leverage, revenue growth, and the level of firm foreign exposure are found to have significant impact on the returns during the period of observation. The results suggest that investors recognize the importance to penalize firms in the financial markets when firms act unethically.

COVID-19's impact on Australian wine markets and regions.

Project description:This paper provides an empirical case study of impacts of COVID-19 on Australia's wine sector. Wine exports were subject to disruptions and, like domestic wine sales, were adversely affected not only by temporary declines in consumers' expected incomes but also by the social distancing measures and self-isolation that led to closure of restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs plus declines in international travel and tourism. Partly offsetting this has been a boost to off-premise and direct e-commerce sales. We first estimate those impacts and their expected partial recovery in 2021 using a new model of global beverage markets. Then, we add results on regional effects, including through domestic wine tourism, using a new economy-wide model with sub-national regions. The paper concludes by drawing lessons on how this sector's resilience to future global shocks could be strengthened.
