The effects of information-seeking behaviours on prevention behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic: the mediating effects of anxiety and fear in Korea.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

Identifying determinants of prevention behaviours during the emergence of a new infectious disease is important. We investigated the associations between information-seeking and prevention behaviours during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and mediating effects of psychiatric factors.

Methods

In total, 1,970 participants from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Etiology Research Center cohort participated in an online survey 55 days after the first COVID-19 case in Korea was diagnosed. Time spent seeking information related to COVID-19; information sources; psychiatric factors, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and the fear of COVID-19; and prevention behaviours were examined. The mediating effect of psychiatric factors was estimated using mediation analysis.

Results

Time spent seeking information and information sources affected several behavioural responses. In men, anxiety mediated associations between information-seeking and prevention behaviours, including purchasing sanitary supplies (effect size [ES], 0.038; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.002 to 0.095) and hoarding (ES, 0.029; 95% CI, 0.002 to 0.068). The fear of COVID-19 also mediated associations between information-seeking and prevention behaviours including refraining from going out (men: ES, 0.034; 95% CI, 0.009 to 0.068; women: ES, 0.052; 95% CI, 0.030 to 0.080), wearing face masks (men: ES, 0.085; 95% CI, 0.031 to 0.184), avoiding public transportation (men: ES, 0.020; 95% CI, 0.000 to 0.044; women: ES, 0.031; 95% CI, 0.015 to 0.051), hoarding (women: ES, 0.051; 95% CI, 0.029 to 0.792), and trying alternative remedies (men: ES, 0.024; 95% CI, 0.004 to 0.053). Depressive symptoms and PTSS did not have any mediating effects.

Conclusions

While the availability of information related to COVID-19 can help prevent infections, it can also promote anxiety and fear, leading to negative behaviours such as hoarding and trying unverified alternative treatments.

Project description:IntroductionDengue has become a major health problem in globally as well as locally. The delay in health-seeking is significantly associated with complications leading to severe dengue and active engagement of communities needs to minimize the delays in management to control epidemics. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and householders' Health-Seeking Behaviours (HSB), Dengue-Prevention Behaviours (DPB), and Community Capacities (CC) for sustained dengue prevention in Sri Lanka, a country with a high dengue endemicity.MethodsA cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in a district with the highest dengue endemicity from January to April 2019. Of the householders, 532 were chosen randomly. A pre-tested, validated, and interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to assess HSB and DPB. The HSB was assessed using three aspects, initial response for fever management, the duration of blood testing and initial response if suspected dengue. The DPB assessment was evaluated using 'waste, outdoor water container, indoor water container, roof gutter and water storage management'. 'Dengue Community Capacity Assessment Tool', with 14 key items was used to assess the level of community capacity for dengue prevention. Out of the total, ≥ 50% was considered as an "adequate" HSB, DPB and CC. Multiple logistic regression was performed to control confounding effects. The results were expressed as adjusted Odds-Ratios (aOR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI).ResultsThe response rate was 93.2% (n = 496). Among them, 44.6% (n = 221) had adequate overall HSB, and 19.2% (n = 95) had adequate DPB. Householders who have ≤ 4 family members are 1.74 times (aOR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.17 - 2.61) more likely to have adequate HSB and 1.85 times (aOR = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.11 - 3.09) more likely to have adequate DPB. The age group of 46 to 70 years' individuals (aOR = 1.74; 95% CI:1.12 - 2.92), and who engaged in employment (aOR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.05 - 2.67) were more likely to have adequate DPB than the group of 18 to 45 years and the non-employed individuals respectively. Of them, 24.6% (n = 122) perceived that they have adequate CC. The householders who have per-capita income < USD 50 are 1.95 times (aOR = 1.95; 95%CI:1.11 - 3.40) more likely to have adequate CC.ConclusionThe HSB, DPB and CC need to be improved to change the behaviour for sustainable dengue prevention and community capacity-building programmes need to be conducted in the Kurunegala district, Sri Lanka.

Project description:Objective: Disparities in cancer care contribute to higher rates of cancer mortality. Online health information would be a resource for cancer patients to obtain knowledge and make health decisions. However, factors that hinder or facilitate online searching behaviours among patients remain unexplored. The current systematic review aims to identify and synthesise evidence of cancer patients' barriers to and facilitators of online health information-seeking behaviours. Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus) were systematically searched, and a total of 123 full-text studies were reviewed of which 24 met the inclusion criteria. Results: Thematic analysis was performed to identify barriers and facilitators of online health information-seeking behaviours. Seven key themes were identified: (1) socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, education, income, ethnicity and language), (2) psychosocial aspects (psychological wellbeing, need for a face to face contact, motivation, support), (3) accessibility (Internet access, residence), (4) quality and quantity of information (amount, reliability), (5) cancer stage and symptoms (time since diagnosis, experiencing symptoms), (6) aspects related to healthcare professionals (relationship with the patients and opinions on online health information) and (7) digital literacy (computer skills and literacy). Conclusions: Findings underscore the significance of recognising the multifaceted nature of barriers and facilitators affecting cancer patients' online health information-seeking behaviours. A strong link between these factors and cancer patients' ability to make informed decisions and cope effectively with their diagnosis emerged. Consequently, addressing these barriers and leveraging the identified facilitators could lead to improvements in patient-centred care, ultimately contributing to better healthcare services and informed decision-making for cancer patients. Project description:BackgroundAttempting pregnancy as a conscious decision (pregnancy intention) can impact the likelihood that a future parent receives or seeks preconception health information, initiates discussions with health professionals, and ultimately optimises their health and behaviours in preparation for healthy pregnancy and child. Knowledge about the relationship between men's preconception health behaviours and their pregnancy intention is only emerging.MethodsThis study aimed to describe the preconception health status, behaviours, information- and advice-seeking of male expectant partners, and to explore differences in these preconception factors based on pregnancy intention. An online retrospective cross-sectional survey was completed by male reproductive partners of pregnant females. Their pregnancy intention was assessed using the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP). Participants were recruited via social media and all variables were self-reported by expectant partners. Chi-square tests examined differences by LMUP categories (planned or ambivalent/unplanned).ResultsOf 156 expectant partners who consented to survey participation, 138 completed all LMUP questions and were included in analysis. Most expectant partners reported their partner's current pregnancy as planned (n = 90;65.2%), less than half reported looking for and finding information about becoming pregnant (40.0%). Expectant partners with planned pregnancy more often reported physical exercise three months before pregnancy compared with partners with unplanned/ambivalent pregnancy (p = 0.001). Expectant partners with ambivalent/unplanned pregnancy more often experienced longstanding illness, disability, or infirmity (p = 0.002) or disregarded contraception (p < 0.001). Despite perceiving good or excellent health, and undertaking physical exercise, numerous expectant partners with planned pregnancy had overweight. Further research exploring the reproductive life plan process for males with longstanding chronic illness or disability may help promote pregnancy planning and preconception health amongst this sub-population.ConclusionsFurther large-scale studies are needed to enable clinicians to better understand pregnancy intentions and preconception health of males and for policy makers to formulate health policies aimed at supporting male preconception health and awareness.
