Using Rheology to Understand Transient and Dynamic Gels.

ABSTRACT: Supramolecular gels can be designed such that pre-determined changes in state occur. For example, systems that go from a solution (sol) state to a gel state and then back to a sol state can be prepared using chemical processes to control the onset and duration of each change of state. Based on this, more complex systems such as gel-to-sol-to-gel and gel-to-gel-to-gel systems can be designed. Here, we show that we can provide additional insights into such systems by using rheological measurements at varying values of frequency or strain during the evolution of the systems. Since the different states are affected to different degrees by the frequency and/or strain applied, this allows us to better understand and follow the changes in state in such systems.

Using Aggregation-Induced Emission to Understand Dipeptide Gels.

Project description:We describe the formation of structured liquids and gels from a functionalised dipeptide based on tetraphenylethylene. Tetraphenylethylene is well-known to be able to undergo aggregation-induced emission. We use the emission data to understand the behaviour of the dipeptide in water under a variety of conditions. The dipeptide forms viscous solutions at high pH. Gels can be formed by a pH-trigger, but syneresis occurs. Addition of a calcium salt also leads to a gel with slight syneresis. Addition of sodium chloride leads to a self-supporting material, but this is not a true gel from the rheological perspective. From the emission data, we infer that there are limited structural changes on addition of sodium chloride or acid, but there are significant changes in molecular packing when the gel is formed by addition of a calcium salt.

Mesoscale characterization of supramolecular transient networks using SAXS and rheology.

Project description:Hydrogels and, in particular, supramolecular hydrogels show promising properties for application in regenerative medicine because of their ability to adapt to the natural environment these materials are brought into. However, only few studies focus on the structure-property relationships in supramolecular hydrogels. Here, we study in detail both the structure and the mechanical properties of such a network, composed of poly(ethylene glycol), end-functionalized with ureido-pyrimidinone fourfold hydrogen bonding units. This network is responsive to triggers such as concentration, temperature and pH. To obtain more insight into the sol-gel transition of the system, both rheology and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) are used. We show that the sol-gel transitions based on these three triggers, as measured by rheology, coincide with the appearance of a structural feature in SAXS. We attribute this feature to the presence of hydrophobic domains where cross-links are formed. These results provide more insight into the mechanism of network formation in these materials, which can be exploited for tailoring their behavior for biomedical applications, where one of the triggers discussed might be used.

Life and death of colloidal bonds control the rate-dependent rheology of gels.

Project description:Colloidal gels exhibit rich rheological responses under flowing conditions. A clear understanding of the coupling between the kinetics of the formation/rupture of colloidal bonds and the rheological response of attractive gels is lacking. In particular, for gels under different flow regimes, the correlation between the complex rheological response, the bond kinetics, microscopic forces, and an overall micromechanistic view is missing in previous works. Here, we report the bond dynamics in short-range attractive particles, microscopically measured stresses on individual particles and the spatiotemporal evolution of the colloidal structures in different flow regimes. The interplay between interparticle attraction and hydrodynamic stresses is found to be the key to unraveling the physical underpinnings of colloidal gel rheology. Attractive stresses, mostly originating from older bonds dominate the response at low Mason number (the ratio of shearing to attractive forces) while hydrodynamic stresses tend to control the rheology at higher Mason numbers, mostly arising from short-lived bonds. Finally, we present visual mapping of particle bond numbers, their life times and their borne stresses under different flow regimes.

Using dynamic monitoring of choices to predict and understand risk preferences.

Project description:Navigating conflict is integral to decision-making, serving a central role both in the subjective experience of choice as well as contemporary theories of how we choose. However, the lack of a sensitive, accessible, and interpretable metric of conflict has led researchers to focus on choice itself rather than how individuals arrive at that choice. Using mouse-tracking-continuously sampling computer mouse location as participants decide-we demonstrate the theoretical and practical uses of dynamic assessments of choice from decision onset through conclusion. Specifically, we use mouse tracking to index conflict, quantified by the relative directness to the chosen option, in a domain for which conflict is integral: decisions involving risk. In deciding whether to accept risk, decision makers must integrate gains, losses, status quos, and outcome probabilities, a process that inevitably involves conflict. Across three preregistered studies, we tracked participants' motor movements while they decided whether to accept or reject gambles. Our results show that 1) mouse-tracking metrics of conflict sensitively detect differences in the subjective value of risky versus certain options; 2) these metrics of conflict strongly predict participants' risk preferences (loss aversion and decreasing marginal utility), even on a single-trial level; 3) these mouse-tracking metrics outperform participants' reaction times in predicting risk preferences; and 4) manipulating risk preferences via a broad versus narrow bracketing manipulation influences conflict as indexed by mouse tracking. Together, these results highlight the importance of measuring conflict during risky choice and demonstrate the usefulness of mouse tracking as a tool to do so.

Poloxamer/Carboxymethyl Pullulan Aqueous Systems-Miscibility and Thermogelation Studies Using Viscometry, Rheology and Dynamic Light Scattering.

Project description:Thermally-induced gelling systems based on Poloxamer 407 (PL) and polysaccharides are known for their biomedical applications; however, phase separation frequently occurs in mixtures of poloxamer and neutral polysaccharides. In the present paper, the carboxymethyl pullulan (CMP) (here synthesized) was proposed for compatibilization with poloxamer (PL). The miscibility between PL and CMP in dilute aqueous solution was studied by capillary viscometry. CMP with substitution degrees higher than 0.5 proved to be compatible with PL. The thermogelation of concentrated PL solutions (17%) in the presence of CMP was monitored by the tube inversion method, texture analysis and rheology. The micellization and gelation of PL in the absence or in the presence of CMP were also studied by dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle temperature and sol-gel transition temperature decrease with the addition of CMP, but the concentration of CMP has a peculiar influence on the rheological parameters of the gels. In fact, low concentrations of CMP decrease the gel strength. With a further increase in polyelectrolyte concentration, the gel strength increases until 1% CMP, then the rheological parameters are lowered again. At 37 °C, the gels are able to recover the initial network structure after high deformations, showing a reversible healing process.

Unveiling Temporal Nonlinear Structure-Rheology Relationships under Dynamic Shearing.

Project description:Understanding how microscopic rearrangements manifest in macroscopic flow responses is one of the central goals of nonlinear rheological studies. Using the sequence-of-physical-processes framework, we present a natural 3D structure-rheology space that temporally correlates the structural and nonlinear viscoelastic parameters. Exploiting the rheo-small-angle neutron scattering (rheo-SANS) techniques, we demonstrate the use of the framework with a model system of polymer-like micelles (PLMs), where we unveil a sequence of microscopic events that micelles experience under dynamic shearing across a range of frequencies. The least-aligned state of the PLMs is observed to migrate from the total strain extreme toward zero strain with increasing frequency. Our proposed 3D space is generic, and can be equally applied to other soft materials under any sort of deformation, such as startup shear or uniaxial extension. This work therefore provides a natural approach for researchers to study complex out-of-equilibrium structure-rheology relationships of soft materials.

Dynamic role of cross-linking proteins in actin rheology.

Project description:We develop a computational model to compare the relative importance of unbinding and unfolding of actin cross-linking proteins (ACPs) in the dynamic properties of the actin cytoskeleton. We show that in the strain-stiffening regime with typical physiological and experimental strain rates, unbinding events are predominant with negligible unfolding. ACPs unbound by greater forces experience larger displacements, with a tendency to rebind to different filaments. At constant strain, stress relaxes to physiological levels by unbinding only--not unfolding--of ACPs, which is consistent with experiments. Also, rebinding of ACPs dampens full relaxation of stress. When the network is allowed to return to a stress-free state after shear deformation, plastic deformation is observed only with unbinding. These results suggest that despite the possibility of unfolding, unbinding of ACPs is the major determinant for the rheology of the actin network.

Probing the Dynamic Structural Evolution of End-Functionalized Polybutadiene/Organo-Clay Nanocomposite Gels before and after Yielding by Nonlinear Rheology and <sup>1</sup>H Double-Quantum NMR.

Project description:Understanding the structural evolution process after the yielding of networks in polymer nanocomposites can provide significant insights into the design and fabrication of high-performance nanocomposites. In this work, using hydroxyl-terminated 1,4-polybutadiene (HTPB)/organo-clay nanocomposite gel as a model, we explored the yielding and recovery process of a polymer network. Linear rheology results revealed the formation of a nanocomposite gel with a house-of-cards structure due to the fully exfoliated 6 to 8 wt% organo-clays. Within this range, nonlinear rheologic experiments were introduced to yield the gel network, and the corresponding recovery processes were monitored. It was found that the main driving force of network reconstruction was the polymer-clay interaction, and the rotation of clay sheets played an important role in arousing stress overshoots. By proton double-quantum (1H DQ) NMR spectroscopy, residual dipolar coupling and its distribution contributed by HTPB segments anchored on clay sheets were extracted to unveil the physical network information. During the yielding process of a house-of-cards network, e.g., 8 wt% organo-clay, nearly one-fourth of physical cross-linking was broken. Based on the rheology and 1H DQ NMR results, a tentative model was proposed to illustrate the yielding and recovery of the network in HTPB/organo-clay nanocomposite gel.

Structure, rheology, and functionality of emulsion-filled gels: Effect of various oil body concentrations and interfacial compositions.

Project description:The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of varied oil body (OB) concentrations and interfacial compositions on the network topology and rheological and functional aspects of composite whey protein isolate (WPI) gels. Particle size and ζ-potential analyzes of the mixed gel solutions containing the OBs extracted at pH 6.8 (6.8-OB) and 11.0 (11.0-OB) revealed a greater aggregation in the 6.8-OB-containing mixed gel solution. 6.8-OB and 11.0-OB generated particle aggregates and oil-drop-embedded network architectures in the WPI gel, respectively. FT-IR analyses showed that OBs stabilized the protein gels' polymeric matrix by hydrogen bonding, steric hindrance, and hydrophobic interactions. Rheology and texture showed that OBs hardened gels. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance showed that excessive inclusion of OBs (30% of 6.8-OB and 35% of 11.0-OB) compromised gel integrity and freeze-thaw stability. This study found that OBs can be active fillers in protein gels for functional meals.

Elastic and Dynamic Heterogeneity in Aging Alginate Gels.

Project description:Anomalous aging in soft glassy materials has generated a great deal of interest because of some intriguing features of the underlying relaxation process, including the emergence of "ultra-long-range" dynamical correlations. An intriguing possibility is that such a huge correlation length is reflected in detectable ensemble fluctuations of the macroscopic material properties. We tackle this issue by performing replicated mechanical and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments on alginate gels, which recently emerged as a good model-system of anomalous aging. Here we show that some of the monitored quantities display wide variability, including large fluctuations in the stress relaxation and the occasional presence of two-step decay in the DLS decorrelation functions. By quantifying elastic fluctuation through the standard deviation of the elastic modulus and dynamic heterogeneities through the dynamic susceptibility, we find that both quantities do increase with the gel age over a comparable range. Our results suggest that large elastic fluctuations are closely related to ultra-long-range dynamical correlation, and therefore may be a general feature of anomalous aging in gels.
