Reactivity of (bi-Oxazoline)organonickel Complexes and Revision of a Catalytic Mechanism.

ABSTRACT: Bi-Oxazoline (biOx) has emerged as an effective ligand framework for promoting nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling, cross-electrophile coupling, and photoredox-nickel dual catalytic reactions. This report fills the knowledge gap of the organometallic reactivity of (biOx)Ni complexes, including catalyst reduction, oxidative electrophile activation, radical capture, and reductive elimination. The biOx ligand displays no redox activity in (biOx)Ni(I) complexes, in contrast to other chelating imine and oxazoline ligands. The lack of ligand redox activity results in more negative reduction potentials of (biOx)Ni(II) complexes and accounts for the inability of zinc and manganese to reduce (biOx)Ni(II) species. On the basis of these results, we revise the formerly proposed "sequential reduction" mechanism of a (biOx)Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction by excluding catalyst reduction steps.

Redox Activity of Pyridine-Oxazoline Ligands in the Stabilization of Low-Valent Organonickel Radical Complexes.

Project description:Low-valent organonickel radical complexes are common intermediates in cross-coupling reactions and metalloenzyme-mediated processes. The electronic structures of N-ligand supported nickel complexes appear to vary depending on the actor ligands and the coordination number. The reduction products of a series of divalent (pyrox)Ni complexes establish the redox activity of pyrox in stabilizing electron-rich Ni(II)-alkyl and -aryl complexes by adopting a ligand-centered radical configuration. The reduced pyrox imparts an enhanced trans-influence. In contrast, such redox activity was not observed in a (pyrox)Ni(I)-bromide species. The excellent capability of pyrox in stabilizing electron-rich Ni species resonates with its proclivity in promoting the reductive activation of C(sp3) electrophiles in cross-coupling reactions.

Synthesis and Catalytic Reactivity of Cobalt Pincer Nitrosyl Hydride Complexes.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activity of low-spin {CoNO}8 pincer complexes of the type [Co(PCP)(NO)(H)] are described. These compounds are obtained either by reacting [Co(PCP)(κ2-BH4)] with NO and Et3N or, alternatively, by reacting [Co(PCP)(NO)]+ with boranes, such as NH3·BH3 in solution. The five-coordinate, diamagnetic Co(III) complex [Co(PCPNMe-iPr)(NO)(H)] was found to be the active species in the hydroboration of alkenes with anti-Markovnikov selectivity. A range of aromatic and aliphatic alkenes were efficiently converted with pinacolborane (HBpin) under mild conditions in good to excellent yield. Mechanistic insight into the catalytic reaction is provided by means of isotope labeling, NMR spectroscopy, and APCI/ESI-MS as well as DFT calculations.

Ligand Redox Activity of Organonickel Radical Complexes Governed by the Geometry.

Project description:Nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions often employ bidentate π-acceptor N-ligands to facilitate radical pathways. This report presents the synthesis and characterization of a series of organonickel radical complexes supported by bidentate N-ligands, including bpy, phen, and pyrox, which are commonly proposed and observed intermediates in catalytic reactions. Through a comparison of relevant analogues, we have established an empirical rule governing the electronic structures of these nickel radical complexes. The N-ligands exhibit redox activity in four-coordinate, square-planar nickel radical complexes, leading to the observation of ligand-centered radicals. In contrast, these ligands do not display redox activity when supporting three-coordinate, trigonal planar nickel radical complexes, which are better described as nickel-centered radicals. This trend holds true irrespective of the nature of the actor ligands. These results provide insights into the beneficial effect of coordinating salt additives and solvents in stabilizing nickel radical intermediates during catalytic reactions by modulating the redox activity of the ligands. Understanding the electronic structures of these active intermediates can contribute to the development and optimization of nickel catalysts for cross-coupling reactions.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Reactivity of {CoNO}<sup>8</sup> PCP Pincer Complexes.

Project description:The reaction of coordinatively unsaturated Co(II) PCP pincer complexes with nitric oxide leads to the formation of new, air-stable, diamagnetic mono nitrosyl compounds. The synthesis and characterization of five- and four-coordinate Co(III) and Co(I) nitrosyl pincer complexes based on three different ligand scaffolds is described. Passing NO through a solution of [Co(PCPNMe-iPr)Cl], [Co(PCPO-iPr)Cl] or [Co(PCPCH2-iPr)Br] led to the formation of the low-spin complex [Co(PCP-iPr)(NO)X] with a strongly bent NO ligand. Treatment of the latter species with (X = Cl, Br) AgBF4 led to chloride abstraction and formation of cationic square-planar Co(I) complexes of the type [Co(PCP-iPr)(NO)]+ featuring a linear NO group. This reaction could be viewed as a formal two electron reduction of the metal center by the NO radical from Co(III) to Co(I), if NO is counted as NO+. Hence, these systems can be described as {CoNO}8 according to the Enemark-Feltham convention. X-ray structures, spectroscopic and electrochemical data of all nitrosyl complexes are presented. Preliminary studies show that [Co(PCPNMe-iPr)(NO)]+ catalyzes efficiently the reductive hydroboration of nitriles with pinacolborane (HBpin) forming an intermediate {CoNO}8 hydride species.

Cr(II) and Cr(III) NCN pincer complexes: synthesis, structure, and catalytic reactivity.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of several new Cr(II) and Cr(III) complexes featuring an NCN pincer ligand with an arene backbone connected to amine donors NEt2 and NiPr2 via CH2-linkers is described. Reacting the in situ lithiated ligand precursor N(C-Br)NCH2-Et with [CrCl3(THF)3] resulted in the formation of the Cr(III) complex trans-[Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-Et)(Cl)2(THF)]. Upon reaction of lithiated N(C-Br)NCH2-iPr with a suspension of anhydrous CrCl2, the Cr(II) complex [Cr(κ2NC-NCNCH2-iPr)2] is formed featuring two NCN ligands bound in κ2NC-fashion. In contrast, when lithiated N(C-Br)NCH2-iPr is reacted with a homogeneous solution of anhydrous CrX2 (X = Cl, Br), complexes [Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-iPr)X] are obtained. Treatment of [Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-iPr)Cl] with 1 equiv of PhCH2MgCl and LiCH2SiMe3 afforded the alkyl complexes [Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-iPr)(CH2Ph)] and [Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-iPr)(CH2SiMe3)]. All Cr(II) complexes exhibit effective magnetic moments in the range of 4.7-4.9 µB which is indicative for d4 high spin systems. If a solution of lithiated N(C-Br)NCH2-iPr is treated with CrCl2, followed by addition of an excess of Na[HB(Et)3], the dimeric complex [Cr(κ2NC-NCNCH2-iPr)(μ2-H)]2 is obtained bearing two bridging hydride ligands. [Cr(κ3NCN-NCNCH2-iPr)(CH2SiMe3)] turned out to be catalytically active for the hydrosilylation of ketones at room temperature with a catalyst loading of 1 mol%. New palladium-oxazoline complexes: Synthesis and evaluation of the optical properties and the catalytic power during the oxidation of textile dyes.

Project description:The present paper describes the synthesis of new palladium-oxazoline complexes in one step with good to high yields (68-95%). The oxazolines were prepared from enantiomerically pure α-aminoalcohols. The structures of the synthesized palladium complexes were confirmed by NMR, FTIR, TOFMS, UV-visible spectroscopic analysis and X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of the complexes were evaluated by the determination of the gap energy values (E g) ranging between 2.34 and 3.21 eV. Their catalytic activities were tested for the degradation of Eriochrome Blue Black B (a model of azo dyes) in the presence of an ecological oxidant (H2O2). The efficiency of the decolorization has been confirmed via UV-visible spectroscopic analysis and the factors affecting the degradation phenomenon have been studied. The removal of the Eriochrome reached high yields. We have found that the complex 9 promoted 84% of color elimination within 5 min (C 0 = 30 mg/L, T = 22 °C, pH 7, H2O2 = 0.5 mL) and the energetic parameters have been also determined.

Binuclear complexes containing a methylnickel moiety: relevance to organonickel intermediates in acetyl coenzyme A synthase catalysis.

Project description:A series of binuclear NiNi complexes supported by a single thiolate bridge and containing a methylnickel moiety have been prepared and fully characterized. The complexes represent structural analogues for the proposed organonickel intermediate in the acetyl coenzyme A synthase catalytic cycle. Variable temperature 31P NMR spectroscopy was used to examine dynamic behavior of the thiolate bridging interaction in two of the derivatives. Kinetic analyses, independent exchange and crossover experiments support an intermolecular exchange mechanism. Carbonylation results in thioester formation via a reductive elimination pathway.

Synthesis, mechanism of formation, and catalytic activity of Xantphos nickel π-complexes.

Project description:A general synthetic route to the first Xantphos nickel alkyne and alkene complexes has been discovered. Various Ni π-complexes were prepared and characterized. NMR experiments indicate benzonitrile undergoes ligand exchange with a Xantphos ligand of (Xant)2Ni, a compound that was previously believed to be unreactive. The Ni π-complexes were also shown to be catalytically competent in cross coupling and cycloaddition reactions. (Xant)2Ni is also catalytically active for these reactions when activated by a nitrile or coordinating solvent.

Bi- and trinuclear copper(I) complexes of 1,2,3-triazole-tethered NHC ligands: synthesis, structure, and catalytic properties.

Project description:A series of copper complexes (3-6) stabilized by 1,2,3-triazole-tethered N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been prepared via simple reaction of imidazolium salts with copper powder in good yields. The structures of bi- and trinuclear copper complexes were fully characterized by NMR, elemental analysis (EA), and X-ray crystallography. In particular, [Cu2(L2)2](PF6)2 (3) and [Cu2(L3)2](PF6)2 (4) were dinuclear copper complexes. Complexes [Cu3(L4)2](PF6)3 (5) and [Cu3(L5)2](PF6)3 (6) consist of a triangular Cu3 core. These structures vary depending on the imidazolium backbone and N substituents. The copper-NHC complexes tested are highly active for the Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction in an air atmosphere at room temperature in a CH3CN solution. Complex 4 is the most efficient catalyst among these polynuclear complexes in an air atmosphere at room temperature.
