Descriptor and Scaling Relations for Ion Mobility in Crystalline Solids.

ABSTRACT: Ion mobility is a critical performance parameter not only in electrochemical energy storage and conversion but also in other electrochemical devices. On the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have derived a descriptor for the ion mobility in battery electrodes and solid electrolytes. This descriptor is entirely composed of observables that are easily accessible: ionic radii, oxidation states, and the Pauling electronegativities of the involved species. Within a particular class of materials, the migration barriers are connected to this descriptor through linear scaling relations upon the variation of either the cation chemistry of the charge carriers or the anion chemistry of the host lattice. The validity of these scaling relations indicates that a purely ionic view falls short of capturing all factors influencing ion mobility in solids. The identification of these scaling relations has the potential to significantly accelerate the discovery of materials with desired mobility properties.

Physical descriptor for the Gibbs energy of inorganic crystalline solids and temperature-dependent materials chemistry.

Project description:The Gibbs energy, G, determines the equilibrium conditions of chemical reactions and materials stability. Despite this fundamental and ubiquitous role, G has been tabulated for only a small fraction of known inorganic compounds, impeding a comprehensive perspective on the effects of temperature and composition on materials stability and synthesizability. Here, we use the SISSO (sure independence screening and sparsifying operator) approach to identify a simple and accurate descriptor to predict G for stoichiometric inorganic compounds with ~50 meV atom-1 (~1 kcal mol-1) resolution, and with minimal computational cost, for temperatures ranging from 300-1800 K. We then apply this descriptor to ~30,000 known materials curated from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). Using the resulting predicted thermochemical data, we generate thousands of temperature-dependent phase diagrams to provide insights into the effects of temperature and composition on materials synthesizability and stability and to establish the temperature-dependent scale of metastability for inorganic compounds.

Helically-driven granular mobility and gravity-variant scaling relations.

Project description:This study discusses the role and function of helical design as it relates to slippage during translation of a vehicle in glass bead media. We show discrete element method (DEM) and multi-body dynamics (MBD) simulations and experiments of a double-helix Archimedes screw propelled vehicle traveling in a bed of soda-lime glass beads. Utilizing granular parameters from the literature and a reduced Young's modulus, we validate the set of granular parameters against experiments. The results suggest that MBD-DEM provides reliable dynamic velocity estimates. We provide the glass, ABS, and glass-ABS simulation parameters used to obtain these results. We also examine recently developed granular scaling laws for wheels applied to these shear-driven vehicles under three different simulated gravities. The results indicate that the system obeys gravity granular scaling laws for constant slip conditions but is limited in each gravity regime when slip begins to increase.

Computational materials design of crystalline solids.

Project description:The modelling of materials properties and processes from first principles is becoming sufficiently accurate as to facilitate the design and testing of new systems in silico. Computational materials science is both valuable and increasingly necessary for developing novel functional materials and composites that meet the requirements of next-generation technology. A range of simulation techniques are being developed and applied to problems related to materials for energy generation, storage and conversion including solar cells, nuclear reactors, batteries, fuel cells, and catalytic systems. Such techniques may combine crystal-structure prediction (global optimisation), data mining (materials informatics) and high-throughput screening with elements of machine learning. We explore the development process associated with computational materials design, from setting the requirements and descriptors to the development and testing of new materials. As a case study, we critically review progress in the fields of thermoelectrics and photovoltaics, including the simulation of lattice thermal conductivity and the search for Pb-free hybrid halide perovskites. Finally, a number of universal chemical-design principles are advanced.

Interacting Quantum Atoms Method for Crystalline Solids.

Project description:An implementation of the Interacting Quantum Atoms method for crystals is presented. It provides a real space energy decomposition of the energy of crystals in which all energy components are physically meaningful. The new package ChemInt enables one to compute intra-atomic and inter-atomic energies, as well as electron population measures used for quantitative description of chemical bonds in crystals. The implementation is tested and applied to characteristic molecular and crystalline systems with different types of bonding.

Scaling relations for auxin waves.

Project description:We analyze an 'up-the-gradient' model for the formation of transport channels of the phytohormone auxin, through auxin-mediated polarization of the PIN1 auxin transporter. We show that this model admits a family of travelling wave solutions that is parameterized by the height of the auxin-pulse. We uncover scaling relations for the speed and width of these waves and verify these rigorous results with numerical computations. In addition, we provide explicit expressions for the leading-order wave profiles, which allows the influence of the biological parameters in the problem to be readily identified. Our proofs are based on a generalization of the scaling principle developed by Friesecke and Pego to construct pulse solutions to the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model, which describes a one-dimensional chain of coupled nonlinear springs.

Untargeted Molecular Discovery in Primary Metabolism: Collision Cross Section as a Molecular Descriptor in Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry.

Project description:In this work, we established a collision cross section (CCS) library of primary metabolites based on analytical standards in the Mass Spectrometry Metabolite Library of Standards (MSMLS) using a commercially available ion mobility-mass spectrometer (IM-MS). From the 554 unique compounds in the MSMLS plate library, we obtained a total of 1246 CCS measurements over a wide range of biochemical classes and adduct types. Resulting data analysis demonstrated that the curated CCS library provides broad molecular coverage of metabolic pathways and highlights intrinsic mass-mobility relationships for specific metabolite superclasses. The separation and characterization of isomeric metabolites were assessed, and all molecular species contained within the plate library, including isomers, were critically evaluated to determine the analytical separation efficiency in both the mass ( m/ z) and mobility (CCS/ΔCCS) dimension required for untargeted metabolomic analyses. To further demonstrate the analytical utility of CCS as an additional molecular descriptor, a well-characterized biological sample of human plasma serum (NIST SRM 1950) was examined by LC-IM-MS and used to provide a detailed isomeric analysis of carbohydrate constituents by ion mobility.

Heterogeneous lattice strain strengthening in severely distorted crystalline solids.

Project description:Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) exhibit outstanding mechanical properties because the core effect of severe atomic lattice distortion is distinctly different from that of traditional alloys. However, at the mesoscopic scale the underlying physics for the abundant dislocation activities responsible for strength-ductility synergy has not been uncovered. While the Eshelby mean-field approaches become insufficient to tackle yielding and plasticity in severely distorted crystalline solids, here we develop a three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulation approach by taking into account the experimentally measured lattice strain field from a model FeCoCrNiMn MPEA to explore the heterogeneous strain-induced strengthening mechanisms. Our results reveal that the heterogeneous lattice strain causes unusual dislocation behaviors (i.e., multiple kinks/jogs and bidirectional cross slips), resulting in the strengthening mechanisms that underpin the strength-ductility synergy. The outcome of our research sheds important insights into the design of strong yet ductile distorted crystalline solids, such as high-entropy alloys and high-entropy ceramics.

Shaping active matter from crystalline solids to active turbulence.

Project description:Active matter drives its constituent agents to move autonomously by harnessing free energy, leading to diverse emergent states with relevance to both biological processes and inanimate functionalities. Achieving maximum reconfigurability of active materials with minimal control remains a desirable yet challenging goal. Here, we employ large-scale, agent-resolved simulations to demonstrate that modulating the activity of a wet phoretic medium alone can govern its solid-liquid-gas phase transitions and, subsequently, laminar-turbulent transitions in fluid phases, thereby shaping its emergent pattern. These two progressively emerging transitions, hitherto unreported, bring us closer to perceiving the parallels between active matter and traditional matter. Our work reproduces and reconciles seemingly conflicting experimental observations on chemically active systems, presenting a unified landscape of phoretic collective dynamics. These findings enhance the understanding of long-range, many-body interactions among phoretic agents, offer new insights into their non-equilibrium collective behaviors, and provide potential guidelines for designing reconfigurable materials.

Intrinsic dichroism in amorphous and crystalline solids with helical light.

Project description:Amorphous solids do not exhibit long-range order due to the disordered arrangement of atoms. They lack translational and rotational symmetry on a macroscopic scale and are therefore isotropic. As a result, differential absorption of polarized light, called dichroism, is not known to exist in amorphous solids. Using helical light beams that carry orbital angular momentum as a probe, we demonstrate that dichroism is intrinsic to both amorphous and crystalline solids. We show that in the nonlinear regime, helical dichroism is responsive to the short-range order and its origin is explained in terms of interband multiphoton assisted tunneling. We also demonstrate that the helical dichroism signal is sensitive to chirality and its strength can be controlled and tuned using a superposition of OAM and Gaussian beams. Our research challenges the conventional knowledge that dichroism does not exist in amorphous solids and enables to manipulate the optical properties of solids.

The origin and stability of nanostructural hierarchy in crystalline solids.

Project description:The structural hierarchy exhibited by materials on more than one length scale can play a major part in determining bulk material properties. Understanding the hierarchical structure can lead to new materials with physical properties tailored for specific applications. We have used a combined experimental and phase-field modeling approach to explore such a hierarchical structure at nanoscale for enhanced coarsening resistance of ordered γ' precipitates in an experimental, multicomponent, high-refractory nickel-base superalloy. The hierarchical microstructure formed experimentally in this alloy is composed of a γ matrix with γ' precipitates that contain embedded, spherical γ precipitates, which do not directionally coarsen during high-temperature annealing but do delay coarsening of the larger γ' precipitates. Chemical mapping via atom probe tomography suggests that the supersaturation of Co, Ru, and Re in the γ' phase is the driving force for the phase separation, leading to the formation of this hierarchical microstructure. Representative phase-field modeling highlights the importance of larger γ' precipitates to promote stability of the embedded γ phase and to delay coarsening of the encompassing γ' precipitates. Our results suggest that the hierarchical material design has the potential to influence the high-temperature stability of precipitate strengthened metallic materials.
