A decade retrospective of medical robotics research from 2010 to 2020.

ABSTRACT: Robotics is a forward-looking discipline. Attention is focused on identifying the next grand challenges. In an applied field such as medical robotics, however, it is important to plan the future based on a clear understanding of what the research community has recently accomplished and where this work stands with respect to clinical needs and commercialization. This Review article identifies and analyzes the eight key research themes in medical robotics over the past decade. These thematic areas were identified using search criteria that identified the most highly cited papers of the decade. Our goal for this Review article is to provide an accessible way for readers to quickly appreciate some of the most exciting accomplishments in medical robotics over the past decade; for this reason, we have focused only on a small number of seminal papers in each thematic area. We hope that this article serves to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in researchers to reduce the widening gap between research and translation.

Project description:BackgroundPregnant women with end-stage renal disease on chronic dialysis are at a high risk of maternal and foetal complications. Over the years, the prognosis of their pregnancies has improved with advances in dialysis treatments and maternal and neonatal care. We conducted this systematic review to examine the recent data on maternal and foetal outcomes in pregnant women with end-stage renal failure on chronic dialysis over the last decade.MethodsWe made a systematic review of studies on pregnant women on chronic dialysis published between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2020. We searched the following electronic databases: Medline via PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library, with search strategies for each database. We checked the titles and abstracts identified by the search equation, and two independent reviewers assessed the articles retrieved. For each study, the two reviewers separately recorded the data from each selected article on a standardized data extraction form. For each article, we recorded relevant general information on the study, patient demographic characteristics, dialysis schedule, pregnancy complications and outcomes, maternal complications, and foetal and neonatal outcomes.ResultsThe literature search yielded 1668 potentially relevant abstracts. After reviewing the titles, abstracts and full text, we identified 14 studies according to the inclusion criteria. All studies were observational, nine of them were retrospective and eight were from a single-centre experience. The total number of women included in these studies was 2364 (range 8-2008) and the total number of pregnancies was 2754 (range 8-2352). The patients' ages ranged from 15 to 45 years. Obesity was observed in 808 (34.2%) women and ranged from 1 to 778. Haemodialysis was the predominant modality with 2551 (92.6%) pregnancies, and 203 (7.4%) on peritoneal dialysis. Overall, 68 out of 402 (16.9%) spontaneous miscarriages, 21 out of 402 (5.2%) therapeutic abortions and 26 (8.3%) stillbirths among 313 (stillbirths and live births) were recorded. The mean or median gestational age at delivery ranged from 25.2 to 36 weeks. The main maternal complications were preeclampsia 11.9%, hypertension 7.7% and anaemia 3.9%. Live births represented 287 (71.4%) out of 402 pregnancies, birth weight ranged from 590 to 3500 g and preterm birth was the main, most common complication in all studies, ranging from 50% to 100%. Intrauterine growth restriction was present in 5.9% and small-for-gestational-age was reported in 18.9% of neonates. There were 22 (7.6%) neonatal deaths among 287 live births and 48 (15.3%) perinatal deaths among 313 total births (stillbirths and live births).ConclusionsPresumably, considering the increase in the number of publications and the total number of pregnancies reported therein, the frequency of pregnancy in patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease treated by chronic dialysis has increased. However, the practice of treating pregnant women on dialysis differs significantly among countries. These findings highlight the need to standardize the definition of outcomes and healthcare for pregnant women on dialysis.

Project description:BackgroundWithin the past decade, Africa has faced several recurrent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD), including the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa and the recent 2018-2020 Kivu outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The study thus aimed at quantifying and mapping the scientific output of EVD research published within 2010-2020 though a bibliometric perspective.MethodsEVD-related publications from 2010 to 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases by using the keywords 'Ebola', 'Ebola Virus Disease', 'Ebolas', and 'ebolavirus'. Biblioshiny software (using R-studio cloud) was used to categorise and evaluate authors', countries' and journals' contribution. VOSviewer was used for network visualisation.ResultsAccording to the used search strategy, a total of 3865 and 3848 EVD documents were published in WoS and Scopus, respectively. The average citation per document was 16.1 (WoS) and 16.3 (Scopus). The results show an overall increase in the publication trend within the study period. The leading countries in EVD research were the USA and UK, with over 100 papers in both databases, including Nigeria and South Africa. NIAID and CDC-USA were the most influential institutions, while "Infectious Diseases" and "Medicine" were the most decisive research fields. The most contributing authors included Feldmann H and Qiu XG with over 60 papers in each database, while Journal of Infectious Diseases was the most crucial journal. The most cited article was from Aylward et al. published in 2014, while recent years displayed a keyword focus on "double-blind", "efficacy", "ring vaccination" and "drug effect".ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis provides an updated historical perspective of progress in EVD research and has highlighted the role played by various stakeholders. However, the contribution of African countries and institutions is not sufficiently reflected, implying a need for increased funding and focus on EVD research for effective prevention and control.

Project description:ObjectivesThe Society of Critical Care Medicine last published an intensivist definition in 1992. Subsequently, there have been many publications relating to intensivists. Our purpose is to assess how contemporary studies define intensivist physicians.DesignSystematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science (2010-2020) for publication titles with the terms intensivist, and critical care or intensive care physician, specialist, or consultant. We included studies focusing on adult U.S. intensivists and excluded non-data-driven reports, non-U.S. publications, and pediatric or neonatal ICU reports. We aggregated the study title intensivist nomenclatures and parsed Introduction and Method sections to discern the text used to define intensivists. Fourteen parameters were found and grouped into five definitional categories: A) No definition, B) Background training and certification, C) Works in ICU, D) Staffing, and E) Database related. Each study was re-evaluated against these parameters and grouped into three definitional classes (single, multiple, or no definition). The prevalence of each parameter is compared between groups using Fisher exact test.SettingU.S. adult ICUs and databases.InterventionsNone.Measurements and main resultsOf 657 studies, 105 (16%) met inclusion criteria. Within the study titles, 17 phrases were used to describe an intensivist; these were categorized as intensivist in 61 titles (58%), specialty intensivist in 30 titles (29%), and ICU/critical care physician in 14 titles (13%). Thirty-one studies (30%) used a single parameter (B-E) as their definition, 63 studies (60%) used more than one parameter (B-E) as their definition, and 11 studies (10%) had no definition (A). The most common parameter "Works in ICU" (C) in 52 studies (50%) was more likely to be used in conjunction with other parameters rather than as a standalone parameter (multiple parameters vs single-parameter studies; 73% vs 17%; p < 0.0001).ConclusionsThere was no consistency of intensivist nomenclature or definitions in contemporary adult intensivist studies in the United States.
