Grit increases strongly in early childhood and is related to parental background.

ABSTRACT: Grit has been identified as a very important non-cognitive skill that is positively related to educational achievements and labor market success. Recently, it has also been found to be malleable through interventions in primary schools. Yet, little is still known about its development in early childhood and the influence of family background. We present an experiment with 429 children, aged 3-6 years. We measure the level of grit as children's perseverance in a real effort task and their willingness to challenge themselves successfully with another, more difficult task. Based on a principal component analysis, we find that grit increases strongly with age. Parents' assessment of their child's grit is correlated with the actual behavior of their child. Education of parents plays a role for perseverance. Yet, children's level of patience is unrelated to their level of grit.

Parental optimism about childhood obesity-related disease risks.

Project description:ObjectivesMost parents believe childhood obesity is a problem for society, but not for their own children. We sought to understand whether parents' risk assessment was skewed by optimism, the tendency to overestimate one's chances of experiencing positive events.MethodsWe administered a national web-based survey to 502 parents of 5-12-year-old children. Parents reported the chances that (a) their child and (b) 'a typical child in their community' would be overweight or obese, and develop hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and depression in adulthood. Respondents self-reported demographic and health information, and we obtained demographic and health information about the typical child using zip code-level census and lifestyle data. We used regression models with fixed effects to evaluate whether optimism bias was present in parent predictions of children's future health outcomes.ResultsParents had 40 times lower adjusted odds (OR=0.025, P<0.001, 99% CI: 0.006, 0.100) of predicting that their child (versus a typical child) would be overweight or obese in adulthood. Of the 20% of parents who predicted their child would be overweight in adulthood, 93% predicted the typical child would also be overweight in adulthood. Controlling for health and demographic characteristics, parents estimated that their children's chances of developing obesity-related comorbidities would be 12-14 percentage points lower those that of a typical child.ConclusionsParent risk assessment is skewed by optimism, among other characteristics. More accurate risk perception could motivate parents to engage in behavior change.

Using motivational interviewing to reduce parental risk related behaviors for early childhood caries: a pilot study.

Project description:BackgroundDecades of epidemiological studies have documented high rates of early childhood caries (ECC) among American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) children. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate if a motivational interviewing (MI) intervention improved oral self-care behaviors of AIAN caregivers of infants, and determine if the MI intervention promoted positive changes in caregivers' ECC risk-related behaviors.MethodsCaregivers of infants presenting for well- child visits in a medical clinic were randomized to treatment and control groups. At the first visit, a caries risk test (CRT) for cariogenic bacteria was completed for both groups. The Parental Care of Child's Teeth (PCCT) was administered at the second visit and used to assess ECC risk-related behaviors. Over the course of four well-child visits, caregivers in the treatment group participated in a MI discussion focusing on behavior changes and desired outcomes for their personal oral health and their child's. The duration of the intervention was 1 year. The control group was given oral health information traditionally provided at well-child visits. At the fourth well-child visit, the CRT and PCCT questionnaire were administered again.ResultsThe mean bacterial load for mutans streptococcus (MS) was similar at both visits. A slight reduction in the mean bacterial levels of lactobacilli was observed in both the test and control groups after the last visit, although not at a level of statistical significance. The treatment group showed minimal improvement in child feeding practices and nighttime bottle habits.ConclusionsMotivational Interviewing had little effect on oral self-care behaviors as measured by bacterial load, nor did MI reduce parental risk related behavior for early childhood caries.Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov# NCT04286256. Project description:BackgroundLeber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) are the most frequent forms of hereditary optic neuropathies. LHON is associated with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations whereas ADOA is mainly due to mutations in the OPA1 gene that encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in the mitochondrial inner membrane remodeling. A striking influence of mtDNA haplogroup J on LHON expression has been demonstrated and it has been recently suggested that this haplogroup could also influence ADOA expression. In this study, we have tested the influence of mtDNA backgrounds on OPA1 mutations.MethodsTo define the relationships between OPA1 mutations and mtDNA backgrounds, we determined the haplogroup affiliation of 41 French patients affected by OPA1-related ADOA by control-region sequencing and RFLP survey of their mtDNAs.ResultsThe comparison between patient and reference populations did not revealed any significant difference.ConclusionOur results argue against a strong influence of mtDNA background on ADOA expression. These data allow to conclude that OPA1 could be considered as a "severe mutation", directly responsible of the optic atrophy, whereas OPA1-negative ADOA and LHON mutations need an external factor(s) to express the pathology (i.e. synergistic interaction with mitochondrial background).

Parental socialization of guilt and shame in early childhood.

Project description:Self-conscious emotions emerge early in human development and they help children navigate social relationships. Little is known about the socialization of self-conscious emotions in early childhood. We theorized that parental mental state language use and warmth would be important for young children's self-conscious emotions and their consequent prosocial behaviors. Ninety-eight children residing in the Netherlands (52% girls) aged 2-5 (M = 48.66 months, SD = 13.50 months) visited the research lab with one parent. First, we observed parental mental state language and warmth. Afterward, children were led to believe that they caused a mishap (i.e., accidentally breaking the experimenter's favorite toy) to evoke their guilt and shame, which we micro-coded. In subsequent tasks, we observed children's helping behaviors toward the experimenter. We found that the combination of frequent parental mental state language and high warmth was associated with children's quicker helping to the previously harmed experimenter across toddlerhood and early childhood. More guilt was related to more helping whereas more shame-like avoidance was related to less helping. Our findings based on the sample of Dutch parents and children suggest that, parental frequent mental state talk, in combination with high warmth, may promote children's ability to repair social relationships and behave prosocially after mishaps.

Parental Self-Perception, Parental Investment, and Early Childhood Developmental Outcomes: Evidence From Rural China.

Project description:Using a three-wave longitudinal survey conducted in 815 households in rural Western China, this study aims to examine the association between parental self-perception and early childhood development and the mediation effect of parental investment on the association between parental self-perception and child development when the sample children are at different ages in the early childhood (18-30, 22-36, and 49-65 months). The results demonstrate that parental self-perception are positively and significantly associated with child social-emotional development in all three ages of childhood (from 18 to 65 months). Positive and significant association between parental self-perception and child cognitive development is found in the ages from 22 to 65 months. In addition, findings of this study show that parental investment plays a mediating role in the association between parental self-perception and child cognitive development. The study calls on policymakers to help to strengthen parental self-perception and parental investment related to early childhood development, which should result in better child development in rural China.

Parental education related to their children's health in late childhood and early adolescence for Pacific families within New Zealand.

Project description:Pacific people continue to carry a disproportionately heavy social and health burden relative to their non-Pacific peers in New Zealand, and those with less formal education are experiencing social and health declines. Improving education and educational needs is seen as being central to decreasing these health inequities. While expansive, the empirical evidence-base supporting this stance is relatively weak and increasingly conflicting. Using a large birth cohort of 1,368 eligible Pacific children, together with their mothers and fathers, this study longitudinally investigates the relationship between paternal education levels and sentinel measures of their children's physical health, mental health and health risk taking behaviours during late childhood and early adolescence. In adjusted analyses, it was found that mothers and fathers who undertook further schooling over the 0-6 years postpartum period had children with significantly lower logarithmically transformed body mass index increases at 11-years and 14-years measurement waves compared to 9-years levels than those who did not study (p = 0.017 and p = 0.022, respectively). Furthermore, fathers who undertook further schooling over this 0-6 years postpartum period also had children with significantly lower odds of risk taking behaviours (p = 0.013). These results support policy aimed at increasing educational opportunities for Pacific people in New Zealand.

Psychosocial health disparities in early childhood: Socioeconomic status and parent migration background.

Project description:The association between low socioeconomic status (SES), migration background and psychosocial health could be various in different age stages, rare research has investigated associations in very early childhood. Cross-sectional data of SES, parental migration background, and child's psychosocial problems among 2149 children were collected (M age = 24.6 ± 1.8 months, 49.9% girls) from a community population. Indicators of SES included parental education level, maternal work status, and family composition. Child's psychosocial problems, including social-emotional problems and delay in social-emotional competence, were assessed by the Brief Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment Problem scale and Competence scale, respectively. Interaction effects between SES and maternal migration background in risk of psychosocial problems were found. Among children of a native-born mother, lower maternal and paternal education levels indicated a higher risk of social-emotional problems and competence delay, respectively. Children of a migrant mother had a higher risk of both social-emotional problems and competence delay if they had a migrant father. The results highlight psychosocial health disparities in 2-year-old children and the need for research into mechanisms underlying these associations.

The relationship of school performance with self-control and grit is strongly genetic and weakly causal.

Project description:The non-cognitive skills self-control and grit are often considered predictors of school performance, but whether this relationship is causal remains unclear. We investigated the causality of this association using a twin design. Specifically, we evaluated the direct impact of self-control and grit on school performance, while controlling for genetic or environmental influences common to all three traits (i.e., confounding). Teachers of 4891 Dutch 12-year-old twin pairs (of which 3837 were complete pairs) completed a survey about school performance (school grades), self-control (ASEBA self-control scale), and the perseverance aspect of grit. Our analysis aimed to determine the direct impact of self-control and grit on school performance, while simultaneously controlling for genetic or environmental confounding. Establishing the regression relationship corrected for confounding supports the interpretation of the regression relationship as causal. In all analyses, we corrected for sex, rater bias of the teachers, and parental socioeconomic status. Initially, in the standard regression, self-control, and grit explained 28.4% of the school performance variance. However, allowing for genetic confounding (due to genetic pleiotropy) revealed that most of this association could be attributed to genetic influences that the three traits share. In the presence of genetic pleiotropy, the phenotypic regression of school performance on self-control and grit accounted for only 4.4% (i.e., the effect size association with the causal hypothesis). In conclusion, self-control and grit predict school performance primarily due to genetic pleiotropy, with a much smaller causal effect (R2 = 4.4%). This suggests that interventions targeting self-control and grit alone may yield limited improvements in school performance.

Eczema in early childhood increases the risk of allergic multimorbidity.

Project description:BackgroundEczema in early childhood is associated with the development of subsequent allergic diseases, including food allergy (FA), asthma and hay fever. However, eczema has a heterogenous presentation regarding onset age and persistence, which may lead to different allergic outcomes during childhood/adolescence. Recently, sub-phenotypes of eczema have been suggested as predictors of allergic multimorbidity. Thus, we aimed to identify associations of eczema phenotypes with FA, asthma and hay fever during childhood/adolescence. Additionally, we described the trajectories of eczema, asthma and hay fever stratified by FA presence.MethodsTRACKER (Trajectories of Allergy in Children in Real Life Databases) is a population-based cohort study of 6852 children/adolescents from the Lifelines cohort. We investigated the associations of seven eczema phenotypes, based on onset age and persistence, with FA, asthma and hay fever using logistic regression, adjusted for appropriate covariates. Disease trajectories were determined by calculating prevalence at different ages.ResultsParticipants who suffered from eczema throughout childhood showed higher risks of developing FA, hay fever and asthma. "Very early onset-persistent" eczema showed the strongest associations with FA, asthma and hay fever. The prevalence of eczema, asthma and hay fever at all ages was significantly higher in participants with FA, compared to those without.ConclusionOne of the largest cohort studies on this topic to date shows that (very) early onset and persistent eczema increases the risk of allergic multimorbidity. Identification of infants at risk for developing (very) early onset eczema is of utmost importance to prevent allergic multimorbidity.

Changes in Stress Following Wage Increases for Early Childhood Educators.

Project description:Early childhood educators have one of the most important roles in society, helping the youngest generation flourish, yet educators earn some of the lowest wages. Given their disparate financial value, educators have unsurprisingly reported high stress. Educators' high stress and low wages may affect their health, workplace turnover, and children's development. Here, we observed whether natural wage increases were associated with reduced stress in educators during the 2021-2022 academic year. Across two time points (TPs), 67 center-based educators of children 0-5 years old completed surveys on their wages and psychological stress (perceived stress, depression, and anxiety). Fifty educators provided hair cortisol concentration to represent chronic physiological stress. Over about three months, educators received a mean wage increase of $1.85/hour. Before the wage increase, minoritized educators earned about $1.50 less than White educators, but earnings were more similar at the second TP. Educators' depression at the start of the academic year was related to their next three months' of physiological stress. Over time, educators' stress remained high and was unassociated with wage changes. Our results suggest a concentrated examination into eliminating wage inequities and reducing the stress of educators.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10643-024-01666-0.
