Basal Values of Biochemical and Hematological Parameters in Elite Athletes.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to show how continuous exercise affects the basal values of biochemical and hematological parameters in elite athletes. A total of 14,010 samples (male = 8452 and female = 5558 (March 2011-March 2020)) from 3588 elite athletes (male = 2258 and female = 1330, mean age 24.9 ± 6.9 vs. 24.1 ± 5.5 years, respectively) from 32 sport modalities, were studied over 9 years to check the variation of basal biochemical and hematological parameter values. There were differences seen in the basal values of creatine kinase (CK), urea, creatinine, aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), potassium, total bilirubin, and eosinophil percentage compared to reference population data. However, other analytes showed narrow ranges of variation like glucose, total protein, albumin, sodium, hemoglobin, mean cell volume (MCV), and platelet count. Exercise produces changes in biochemical and hematological basal values of athletes compared to the general population, with the greatest variation in CK, but AST, ALT, LDH, potassium, and total bilirubin (TBil) show high values in serum, only with a wider distribution of values. The data here reflects the effect of exercise on biochemical and hematological parameter baseline ranges in elite athletes. As clinical laboratories use reference intervals to validate clinical reports, these "pseudo" reference intervals should be used when validating laboratory reports.

Project description:Background:CDC's (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) National Center for Health statistics recent reports have shown that an upsurge has occurred in the use of dietary supplements among age of 20 years since 1994 and this use shown regular increase. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effect of supplements on the reproductive health on male athletes in Pakistan. Methods:A total of 150 adult male with mean age of 25.78?±?0.56 years were included in this study and divided into four groups: Non-athlete control (n?=?57), Non supplemental athlete control (n?=?40), Supplemental athlete group I (n?=?28) and supplemental athlete group II (n?=?25). Blood (10 ml) was taken from each subject. Complete blood count was performed and 5 ml of blood was centrifuged to separate plasma and then analyzed for antioxidant enzyme (CAT, POD, GR and GSH) activities, Lipid peroxidation (TBARS), electrolyte, metal (sodium, potassium and zinc) and Luteinizing hormone (LH) concentration. Results:Complete blood count results showed normal RBC, WBC, Platelets, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Mean corpuscular hemoglobin and Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. Antioxidant enzymes (CAT, POD, GR, GSH) increased significantly in supplemental athletes as compared to control groups. Sodium and potassium showed significant increase (p?<?0.001) in supplemental athlete group I, while TBARS also showed significant increase (p?<?0.05) in supplemental group I and II as compared to non athlete control while non supplemental athletes showed significant increase (p?<?0.05) in TBARS concentration as compared to non athlete control. LH concentration was found to be decreased significantly (p?<?0.05) in supplemental group I and II as compared to control groups. Conclusion:It is therefore concluded from the present results that oxidative stress was considerably elevated in response to supplement consumption among athletes which may affect their health haematological parameters and reproductive hormones.

Project description:Training of elite athletes requires regular physiological and medical monitoring to plan the schedule, intensity and volume of training, and subsequent recovery. In sports medicine, ECG-based analyses are well-established. However, they rarely consider the correspondence of respiratory and cardiac activity. Given such mutual influence, we hypothesize that athlete monitoring might be developed with causal inference and that detailed, time-related techniques should be preceded by a more general, time-independent approach that considers the whole group of participants and parameters describing whole signals. The aim of this study was to discover general causal paths among cardiac and respiratory variables in elite athletes in two body positions (supine and standing), at rest. ECG and impedance pneumography signals were obtained from 100 elite athletes. The mean heart rate, the root-mean-square difference of successive RR intervals (RMSSD), its natural logarithm (lnRMSSD), the mean respiratory rate (RR), the breathing activity coefficients, and the resulting breathing regularity (BR) were estimated. Several causal discovery frameworks were applied, comprising Generalized Correlations (GC), Causal Additive Modeling (CAM), Fast Greedy Equivalence Search (FGES), Greedy Fast Causal Inference (GFCI), and two score-based Bayesian network learning algorithms: Hill-Climbing (HC) and Tabu Search. The discovery of cardiorespiratory paths appears ambiguous. The main, still mild, rules best supported by data are: for supine - tidal volume causes heart activity variation, which causes average heart activity, which causes respiratory timing; and for standing - normalized respiratory activity variation causes average heart activity. The presented approach allows data-driven and time-independent analysis of elite athletes as a particular population, without considering prior knowledge. However, the results seem to be consistent with the medical background. Causality inference is an interesting mathematical approach to the analysis of biological responses, which are complex. One can use it to profile athletes and plan appropriate training. In the next step, we plan to expand the study using time-related causality analyses.
