A cross-country analysis on diversification, Sukuk investment, and the performance of Islamic banking systems under the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT: This study investigates the relationship between diversification and Islamic banking systems' performance under the impact of the COVID-19 turmoil using a sample of 24 countries from 2013Q4 and 2020Q4. The findings indicate that the performance of Islamic banking systems is positively associated with sectoral diversification of Shari'ah-compliant financing and income diversification. Although this study confirms a negative impact of the COVID-19 shock, income diversification is found to mitigate the adverse effect of this health crisis on the performance of the Islamic banking systems. In which, Sukuk investment is considered an essential channel for pursuing this diversification strategy. Therefore, this research has important implications for policymakers, managers, and academics.

Is Islamic FinTech coherent with Islamic banking? A stakeholder's perspective during COVID-19.

Project description:The prime purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Islamic fintech in the Islamic banking sector through a stakeholder approach in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through self-administered questionnaires, the study collected the data of 1000 respondents for seven categories of stakeholders directly or indirectly associated with Islamic banking and Islamic finance in Pakistan. The stakeholders include the local community, customers, managers of Islamic banks, depositors, employees, regulatory officials, and advisers of Sharia (Islamic Law). The findings indicate that respondents revealed a keen interest in Islamic banking and Islamic fintech, particularly during and post-COVID-19 and believed that Islamic banks must not be considered as profit-oriented organizations. Rather their benefit to society is way beyond profit maximizations. The respondents noted several factors to focus on the projects related to community engagement, promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty in the country. The study unveils that Islamic banks must adopt the practices of Islamic fintech and financial innovations to align the community's social goals. While COVID-19 crisis further facilitated the communities to include Islamic fintech in the Islamic banking system.

Corporate social responsibility and Islamic social finance impact on banking sustainability post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:This study aims to explore Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Islamic Social Finance activities in Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) as one of the Development of Financial Institutions (DFIs) in Malaysia and their impact on sustainability post-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) (2021-2023). A semi-structured interview was conducted among the top management and employees of BPMB. Resultantly, the bank has aligned its Islamic Social Finance and CSR activities with the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Nevertheless, the impact on banking sustainability post-pandemic remains uncertain as efforts towards SDG remain at the preliminary stage. Conclusively, Islamic Social Finance and CSR are critical to enhance banking sustainability. This study provide insight to other DFIs in understanding the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Islamic Social Finance activities in achieving sustainability post pandemic.

Household investment diversification amid Covid-19 pandemic: Evidence from Chinese investors.

Project description:This paper finds the degree of investor's investment diversification is found to be positively correlated with confirmed cases in the city where they live. This relationship is a result of stricter quarantine policy adopted by cities hit with more severe Covid-19 outbreak, which has led to increased time for investors to trade stocks and seek advisory. In addition, the employment of investors in these cities is often negatively affected. Therefore, they tend to hold a relatively pessimistic view on expectations of future income, and thus be more cautious and risk-averse in terms of investment decisions.

Do customers' perceptions of Islamic banking services predict satisfaction and word of mouth? Evidence from Islamic banks in Bangladesh.

Project description:This study aims to investigate the customers' perceptions of Islamic banking services and their impact on satisfaction and word of mouth (WOM) with others. This study designs the bootstrapping procedures using a partial least square method to test path coefficient results. Structured questionnaires were distributed among clients of Islamic banks in Dhaka city, where 377 responses were collected for data analysis. The findings revealed that there is a highly significant relationship between security and customers' perception. Ethical responsibility and religious value have a positive and significant impact on customers' perception whereas benefit has a negative significant impact on customers' perception. Findings from this study also indicated that customers' perceptions mediate the effect of ethical responsibility, religious value, benefit, and security on satisfaction. In addition, customers' satisfaction mediates the effect of customers' perception and WOM. These findings can promote managers of Islamic banks to build customer satisfaction and WOM with Islamic banking services, and attain competitive advantage that may lead Islamic banks to succeed in the competitive business. This study also provides new insights into customers' WOM with others about Islamic banking services. This knowledge could assist Islamic banks to understand the customers' perceptions that would increase satisfaction and in turn, contribute to WOM with others in determining where would be best to target marketing attention of Islamic banking services with limited resources.

Perceptions of politics and knowledge sharing: Moderating role of Islamic work ethic in the Islamic banking industry of Pakistan.

Project description:Knowledge is the most critical source for sustainable competitive advantage in an organization. Organizations must therefore focus on creating a culture for Knowledge Sharing. However, politics or political work environment is an inevitable outcome where people interact and communicate on a daily basis. Politics discourage Knowledge Sharing and its related efforts in the organization. However, Islamic Work Ethic can remove negativity and strengthen Knowledge Sharing behaviors in the organization. This research focused on the moderating role of Islamic Work Ethic between Perceptions of Politics and Knowledge Sharing behaviors. The data was gathered using a structured questionnaire from the Banking Industry in Karachi, Pakistan using unrestricted non-probability convenience sampling technique. Hypotheses was tested using Structural Equation Modelling in SMART-PLS software. It was found that Perceptions of Politics reduces Knowledge Sharing Behaviors while Islamic Work Ethic Increase Knowledge Sharing Behaviors. Islamic Work Ethic moderates the relationship between Perceptions of Politics and Knowledge Sharing Behaviors. Employees religious orientations affect their work-related outcomes and behaviors. Islamic Banks have been mostly neglected as they have recently emerged as an important part of the economy therefore this study contributes to the literature by collaborating Islamic Work Ethic, Perceptions of Politics and Knowledge Sharing.

Sitting position affects performance in cross-country sit-skiing.

Project description:In cross-country sit-skiing (XCSS), athletes with reduced trunk control predominantly sit with the knees higher than the hips (KH); a position often associated with large spinal flexion. Therefore, to improve spinal curvature a new sledge with frontal trunk support, where knees are lower than hips (KL) was created. It was hypothesized that the KL position would improve respiratory function and enhance performance in seated double-poling compared to KH.Ten female able-bodied cross-country skiers (age 25.5 ± 3.8 years, height 1.65 ± 0.05 m, mass 61.1 ± 6.8 kg) completed a 30 s all-out test (WIN), a submaximal incremental test including 3-7 3 min loads (SUB) and a maximal 3 min time trial (MAX) in both KL and KH positions. During SUB and MAX external power, pole forces, surface electromyography, and kinematics were measured. Metabolic rates were calculated from oxygen consumption and blood lactate concentrations.KL reduced spinal flexion and range of motion at the hip joint and indicated more muscle activation in the triceps. Performance (W kg-1) was impeded in both WIN (KH 1.40 ± 0.30 vs. KL 1.13 ± 0.33, p < 0.01) and MAX (KH 0.88 ± 0.19 vs. KL 0.67 ± 0.14, p < 0.01). KH resulted in higher gross efficiency (GE) and lower lactate concentration, anaerobic metabolic rate, and minute ventilation for equal power output.The new KL position can be recommended due to improved respiratory function but may impede performance. Generalization of results to XCSS athletes with reduced trunk muscle control may be limited, but these results can serve as a control for future studies of para-athletes.

What drives diversification of national food supplies? A cross-country analysis.

Project description:Little previous research has explored what drives the diversification of national food supplies (DFS) across countries and regions. We construct and analyse a cross-country dataset linking a simple DFS indicator - the share of calories supplied by nonstaple foods - with structural transformation and agroecological indicators. Panel econometric models show that several indicators of structural transformation (economic growth, urbanization and demographic change) are strong predictors of diversification within countries, yet time-invariant agroecological factors are also significantly associated with diversification, which appears to explain why some countries have exceptionally low or high DFS relative to their level of economic development. We discuss the implications of these findings for food and nutrition strategies.

Indexing blood banking performance in India: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of states and districts.

Project description:BackgroundMultiple international assessments have highlighted gaps in blood banking globally. However, there is a dearth of subnational assessments. We applied a thematic framework with multiple composite indices to assess blood bank performance across Indian states and districts.MethodsIn this retrospective cross-sectional analysis, data for 2493 blood banks in 35 states/union territories (UTs) and 616 districts was extracted from the National Blood Transfusion Council for 2016. The framework involved seven themes (accreditation, ownership, safety, volume, infrastructure, regulation, and workforce) with several indicators nested under them. Composite thematic indices and an overall index (0-100, with 100 being the best performance) were constructed using the adjusted Mazziotta-Pareto index method that can provide composite indices that are partially non-compensatory and easily interpretable.ResultsThe state-level median [interquartile range] value of the overall index was 59.61 [46.35, 71.67]. Chandigarh had the highest values for safety, regulation, workforce, and ownership indices, Maharashtra for volume and infrastructure indices, and Manipur for accreditation index. Districts in southern and western states performed well on the overall index with inter- and intra-state variations for themes. District-level correlations depicted positive associations among indices with the strongest correlation between ownership and accreditation indices (n=616, R=0.92, p<0.001).ConclusionBlood banking in India is fragmented, with variations in themes across geographies. The northern and northeastern states require more attention for volume, accreditation, infrastructure, and ownership. While the southern and western-central regions need to prioritize safety. The framework with thematic indices, when applied to routine data, can be useful for monitoring and evaluation to decide local policies and resource allocations.

A Cross-Country Network Analysis of Resilience Systems in Young Adults.

Project description:Multisystemic resilience has been conceptualised as involving a constellation of protective factors which operate at different levels to promote adaptation and thriving despite experiences of adversity. We used network modelling to discover how protective factors at two different systemic levels (intrapersonal strengths and social-ecological resources) interrelate, drawing on survey data from 5283 emerging adults (M = 24.53 years; 52% female) in Brazil, China, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, the US and Vietnam. Results indicated that the level of connectivity within and between protective factor levels was similar between the countries, but that there was substantial variation in the specific interrelations among protective factors (both within and between levels), including the presence of some country-specific negative interrelations between protective factors at different levels. The findings support the importance of cultural context in studies of resilience, with implications for the development of appropriate resilience-building interventions for this age group.

Health systems' responsiveness and its characteristics: a cross-country comparative analysis.

Project description:OBJECTIVES. Responsiveness has been identified as one of the intrinsic goals of health care systems. Little is known, however, about its determinants. Our objective is to investigate the potential country-level drivers of health system responsiveness. DATA SOURCE. Data on responsiveness are taken from the World Health Survey. Information on country-level characteristics is obtained from a variety of sources including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). STUDY DESIGN. A two-step procedure. First, using survey data we derive a country-level measure of system responsiveness purged of differences in individual reporting behavior. Secondly, we run cross-sectional country-level regressions of responsiveness on potential drivers. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS. Health care expenditures per capita are positively associated with responsiveness, after controlling for the influence of potential confounding factors. Aspects of responsiveness are also associated with public sector spending (negatively) and educational development (positively). CONCLUSIONS. From a policy perspective, improvements in responsiveness may require higher spending levels. The expansion of nonpublic sector provision, perhaps in the form of increased patient choice, may also serve to improve responsiveness. However, these inferences are tentative and require further study.
