Knowledge and attitudes among Lebanese pregnant women and women seeking fertility treatment during the COVID-19 outbreak: a cross-sectional survey.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

COVID-19 has been recognised as a global health emergency necessitating collaborative efforts to halt further disease spread. The success of public health interventions and vaccination campaigns is contingent on the knowledge and awareness level of the public. We aim to assess COVID-19 knowledge and attitudes among Lebanese pregnant women and women seeking fertility treatment.

Design

Cross-sectional study using telehealth administered survey.

Setting

University-affiliated tertiary care centre.

Participants

The data of 402-Lebanese women pregnant or seeking fertility treatment aged 20-45 years were analysed.

Outcome measures

Extent of COVID-19 general knowledge, pregnancy-specific knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 practices.

Results

All participants reported being knowledgeable about COVID-19, 70% of which rated their knowledge as 7 or more on a numerical scale of 0-10. The mean general COVID-19 knowledge was 22.15 (SD 2.44, range 14-27) indicating a high level of knowledge. The mean pregnancy-specific COVID-19 knowledge 6.84 (SD 2.061, range 0-10) indicated poorer pregnancy-specific knowledge compared with general COVID-19 knowledge. A trend towards higher knowledge was noted with higher income status. Reproductive age women with higher pregnancy-specific knowledge had more positive attitudes toward COVID-19 pregnancy practices.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest a deficiency in pregnancy-specific COVID-19 knowledge stressing the necessity for targeted public health education interventions. It highlights the need for enhancing COVID-19 pregnancy-specific awareness which can serve as a stepping stone in the success of COVID-19 vaccination campaigns and in halting further disease spread.

Project description:BackgroundPrenatal anxiety has been a significant public health issue globally, leading to adverse health outcomes for mothers and children. The study aimed to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), and anxiety level of pregnant women during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic in Wuhan and investigate the influencing factors for prenatal anxiety in this specific context.MethodsPregnant subjects' KAP towards COVID-19 and their sociodemographics and pregnancy information were collected using questionnaires. The Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) was used to assess anxiety status. Factors associated with the level of prenatal anxiety were analyzed by Pearson's chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression analyses.ResultsThe prenatal anxiety prevalence in this population was 20.8%. The mean score of knowledge was 13.2 ± 1.1 on a 0 ~ 14 scale. The attitudes and practices data showed that 580/ 817 (71.0%) were very concerned about the news of COVID-19, 455/817 (55.7%) considered the official media to be the most reliable information source for COVID-19, and 681/817 (83.4%) were anxious about the possibility of being infected by COVID-19. However, only 83/817 (10.2%) worried about contracting COVID-19 infection through the ultrasound transducer during a routing morphology scan. About two-thirds 528/817 (64.6%) delayed or canceled the antenatal visits. Approximately half of them 410/817 (50.2%) used two kinds of personal protection equipments (PPEs) during hospital visits. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the influential factors for prenatal anxiety included previous children in the family, knowledge score, media trust, worry of contracting the COVID-19 infection and worry about getting infected with COVID-19 from the ultrasound probe antenatal care (ANC) schedule.ConclusionPrenatal anxiety was prevalent among pregnant women in Wuhan during the outbreak of COVID-19. The current findings identified factors associated with the level of prenatal anxiety that could be targeted for psychological care.

Project description:Study questionWhat are the knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards fertility and elective oocyte cryopreservation (OC) for age-related fertility decline (ARFD) in women in the UK?Summary answerAwareness of OC for ARFD has reportedly improved compared to studies carried out almost a decade ago, but inconsistencies in knowledge remain regarding the rate of miscarriage amongst specific age groups, the financial costs and optimal age to undergo OC for ARFD.What is known alreadyThe age of first-time motherhood has increased amongst western societies, with many women of reproductive age underestimating the impact of age on fertility. Further understanding of women's awareness of their fertility, the options available to preserve it and the barriers for seeking treatment earlier are required in order to prevent the risk of involuntary childlessness.Study design, size, durationA hyperlink to a cross-sectional survey was posted on social media (Instagram) between 25 February 2021 and 11 March 2021.Participants/materials, setting, methodsWomen from the general population aged 18-50 years were invited to complete the survey.Main results and the role of chanceIn total, 5482 women fulfilled the inclusion criteria and completed the survey. The mean age of participants was 35.0 years (SD 10.25; range 16-52). Three quarters (74.1%; n = 4055) disagreed or strongly disagreed they felt well informed regarding the options available to preserve their fertility, in case of a health-related problem or ARFD. The majority overestimated the risk of miscarriage in women aged ≥30 years old, with 14.5% correctly answering 20%, but underestimated the risks in women ≥40, as 20.1% correctly answered 40-50%. Three quarters (73.2%; n = 4007) reported an awareness of OC for ARFD and 65.8% (n = 3605) reported that they would consider undergoing the procedure. The number of women who considered OC for ARFD across age groups were as follows: 18-25 (8.3%; n = 300), 26-30 (35.8%; n = 1289), 31-35 (45.9%; n = 1654), 36-40 (9.6%; n = 347), 41-45 (0.3%; n = 13), and 46-50 (0.1%; n = 2). The majority of women (81.3%; n = 4443) underestimated the cost of a single cycle of OC for ARFD (<£5000). Furthermore, 10.4% (n = 566) believed a single cycle would be adequate enough to retrieve sufficient oocytes for cryopreservation. Approximately 11.0% (n = 599) believed OC for ARFD may pose significant health risks and affect future fertility. Less than half agreed or strongly agreed that the lack of awareness regarding OC for ARFD has impacted the likelihood of pursuing this method of fertility preservation further (41.4%; n = 2259).Limitations, reasons for cautionResults from cross-sectional studies are limited as interpretations made are merely associations and not of causal relationships. The online nature of participant recruitment is subject to selection bias, considering women with access to social media are often from higher socioeconomic and education backgrounds, thus limiting generalizability of the findings.Wider implications of the findingsFurther education regarding the financial costs and optimal age to undergo elective OC to increase the chances of successful livebirth are required. Project description:BackgroundDespite widespread use, many Lebanese women have limited understanding of oral contraceptive pills (OCP), with misinformation and cultural barriers contributing to misuse and discontinuation. Additionally, the non-contraceptive benefits of OCP are often overlooked. Addressing these gaps can promote safer use and improve women's health. This study aims to explore Lebanese women's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding OCP and identify associated factors.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire among Lebanese women aged between 18- and 49-years old shopping in local pharmacies. Multivariable analyses were employed to investigate the factors associated with knowledge, attitude, practices toward OCP usage.ResultsA total of 384 women participated in the study, with 36.9% reporting ever using OCP. The mean knowledge score was 4.8 (SD = 1.5) out of 13, revealing notable knowledge gaps regarding OCP. Profession (medical employment), age, monthly family income, and OCP usage were all associated with knowledge, with profession showing the strongest association (β = 0.329, p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the mean attitude score was 3.8 (SD = 0.5) out of 6, suggesting an overall positive attitude towards OCP. Educational level (college/university vs. secondary or vocational or below, unstandardized β of 0.11, standardized β of 0.119, 95% CI of 0.01-0.21, P-value = 0.032) was associated with attitude. Additionally, age (AOR 1.05, 95% CI: 1.02-1.09), knowledge (AOR 1.20, 95% CI: 1.07-1.33), and monthly family income (>$2000 vs. $1,000, AOR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.24-0.91) emerged as significant factors associated with OCP usage.ConclusionThe study revealed gaps in Lebanese women's knowledge, attitude, and practices toward OCP, underscoring the need for accurate, patient-centered information. Providing this information in the context of decision-making empowers women to make informed contraceptive choices that align with their health needs and personal preferences.
