Unveiling the Effect of Solvents on Crystallization and Morphology of 2D Perovskite in Solvent-Assisted Method.

ABSTRACT: Controlling the crystallographic orientations of 2D perovskite is regarded as an effective way to improve the efficiency of PSCs based on 2D perovskite. In this paper, five different assistant solvents were selected to unveil the effect of solvents on crystallization and morphology of 2D perovskite in a solvent-assisted method. Results demonstrated that the effect of Lewis basicity on the crystallization process was the most important factor for preparing 2D perovskite. The stability of the intermediate, reacted between the solvent and the Pb2+, determined the quality of 2D film. The stronger the Lewis basicity was, the more obvious the accurate control effect on the top-down crystallization process of 2D perovskite would be. This could enhance the crystallographic orientation of 2D perovskite. The effect of Lewis basicity played a more important role than other properties of the solvent, such as boiling point and polarity.

Laser-Assisted Fabrication for Metal Halide Perovskite-2D Nanoconjugates: Control on the Nanocrystal Density and Morphology.

Project description:We report on a facile and rapid photo-induced process to conjugate graphene-based materials with metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals. We show that a small number of laser pulses is sufficient to decorate the 2-dimensional (2D) flakes with metal-halide nanocrystals without affecting their primary morphology. At the same time, the density of anchored nanocrystals could be finely tuned by the number of irradiation pulses. This facile and rapid room temperature method provides unique opportunities for the design and development of perovskite-2D nanoconjugates, exhibiting synergetic functionality by combining nanocrystals of different morphologies and chemical phases with various 2D materials.

Solvent-dripping modulated 3D/2D heterostructures for high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The controlled growth of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite atop three-dimensional (3D) perovskite films reduces interfacial recombination and impedes ion migration, thus improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Unfortunately, the random orientation of the spontaneously formed 2D phase atop the pre-deposited 3D perovskite film can deteriorate charge extraction owing to energetic disorder, limiting the maximum attainable efficiency and long-term stability of the PSCs. Here, we introduce a meta-amidinopyridine ligand and the solvent post-dripping step to generate a highly ordered 2D perovskite phase on the surface of a 3D perovskite film. The reconstructed 2D/3D perovskite interface exhibits reduced energetic disorder and yields cells with improved performance compared with control 2D/3D samples. PSCs fabricated with the meta-amidinopyridine-induced phase-pure 2D perovskite passivation show a maximum power conversion efficiency of 26.05% (a certified value of 25.44%). Under damp heat and outdoor tests, the encapsulated PSCs maintain 82% and 75% of their initial PCE after 1000 h and 840 h, respectively, demonstrating improved practical durability.

A relaxation-assisted 2D IR spectroscopy method.

Project description:A method of two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy called relaxation-assisted 2D IR (RA 2DIR) is proposed that utilizes vibrational energy relaxation transport in molecules to enhance cross-peak amplitudes. This method substantially increases the range of distances accessible by 2D IR and is capable of identifying long-range connectivity patterns in molecules. RA 2DIR is illustrated in interactions among CN and CO modes in 3-cyanocoumarin and 4-acetylbenzonitrile, where the distances between the CN and CO groups are approximately 3.1 and approximately 6.5 A, respectively. A 6-fold increase in cross-peak amplitude was observed in 4-acetylbenzonitrile when the dual-frequency RA 2DIR method was used.

Mixed Solvents Assisted Post-Treatment Enables High-Efficiency Single-Junction Perovskite and 4T Perovskite/CIGS Tandem Solar Cells.

Project description:The interface between the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) plays a vital role in hole extraction and electron blocking in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and it is particularly susceptible to harmful defects. Surface passivation is an effective strategy for addressing the above concerns. However, because of its strong polarity, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is used as a solvent in all of the surface treatment materials reported thus far, and it frequently damages the surface of perovskite. In this paper, a method is proposed for dissolving the passivation materials, for example, guanidine bromide (GABr), in mixed solvents (1:1) of IPA and toluene (TL), which can efficiently passivate interface and grain boundary defects by minimizing the IPA solubility of the perovskite surface. As a result, all the performance parameters Voc, Jsc, and FF are improved, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 20.1 to 22.7%. Moreover, combining the PSCs with GABr post-treatment in mixed solvents with copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells, a 4-terminal (4T) perovskite/CIGS tandem device is realized and a PCE of 25.5% is achieved. The mixed solvent passivation strategy demonstrated here, hopefully, will open new avenues for improving PSCs' efficiency and stability.

Self-exfoliation of 2D covalent organic frameworks: morphology transformation induced by solvent polarity.

Project description:Recently, covalent organic nanosheets (CONs) have emerged as functional two-dimensional (2D) materials for versatile applications. Strong interaction among layers and the instability of borate ester in moisture are the major hurdles to obtain few layered boron-containing CONs by exfoliation of their bulk counterparts. In this paper, we report a facile approach for preparation of few layered borate ester-containing CONs based on electrostatic repulsion of ions. We incorporated organic ionic groups into porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and it has been proved that the COFs with quaternary ammonium group could self-exfoliate into few layered ionic covalent organic nanosheets (iCONs) in polar organic solvents. Interestingly, the morphology of the iCOFs-A could be changed from a multilayered aggregation to nanocapsules, or 2D sheets when solvents with different polarity were used. In contrast, non-ionic covalent organic frameworks COFs-B could not self-exfoliate in various solvents. In addition, the self-exfoliated nanosheets could be used to fabricate uniform thin films on SiO2 wafer and the film exhibited explicit optical and electrical properties.

Spontaneous Crystallization of Perovskite Nanocrystals in Nonpolar Organic Solvents: A Versatile Approach for their Shape-Controlled Synthesis.

Project description:The growing demand for perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) for various applications has stimulated the development of facile synthetic methods. Perovskite NCs have often been synthesized by either ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) at room temperature or by hot-injection at high temperatures and inert atmosphere. However, the use of polar solvents in LARP affects their stability. Herein, we report on the spontaneous crystallization of perovskite NCs in nonpolar organic media at ambient conditions by simple mixing of precursor-ligand complexes without application of any external stimuli. The shape of the NCs can be controlled from nanocubes to nanoplatelets by varying the ratio of monovalent (e.g. formamidinium+ (FA+ ) and Cs+ ) to divalent (Pb2+ ) cation-ligand complexes. The precursor-ligand complexes are stable for months, and thus perovskite NCs can be readily prepared prior to use. Moreover, we show that this versatile synthetic process is scalable and generally applicable for perovskite NCs of different compositions.

Effect of Different Solvents on Morphology and Gas-Sensitive Properties of Grinding-Assisted Liquid-Phase-Exfoliated MoS<sub>2</sub> Nanosheets.

Project description:Grinding-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation is a widely used method for the preparation of two-dimensional nanomaterials. In this study, N-methylpyrrolidone and acetonitrile, two common grinding solvents, were used during the liquid-phase exfoliation for the preparation of MoS2 nanosheets. The morphology and structure of MoS2 nanosheets were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of grinding solvents on the gas-sensing performance of the MoS2 nanosheets were investigated for the first time. The results show that the sensitivities of MoS2 nanosheet exfoliation with N-methylpyrrolidone were 2.4-, 1.4-, 1.9-, and 2.7-fold higher than exfoliation with acetonitrile in the presence of formaldehyde, acetone, and ethanol and 98% relative humidity, respectively. MoS2 nanosheet exfoliation with N-methylpyrrolidone also has fast response and recovery characteristics to 50-1000 ppm of CH2O. Accordingly, although N-methylpyrrolidone cannot be removed completely from the surface of MoS2, it has good gas sensitivity compared with other samples. Therefore, N-methylpyrrolidone is preferred for the preparation of gas-sensitive MoS2 nanosheets in grinding-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. The results provide an experimental basis for the preparation of two-dimensional materials and their application in gas sensors.

Synergistic effect of the anti-solvent bath method and improved annealing conditions for high-quality triple cation perovskite thin films.

Project description:One step solution processing together with anti-solvent engineering is a tested route in producing high-quality perovskite films due to its simplicity and low fabrication costs. Commercialization of perovskites will require replacing the anti-solvent drip process and lowering annealing temperatures to decrease the energy payback time. In this work, we successfully replace the anti-solvent drip with the anti-solvent bath (ASB) method through balancing the methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA) cations to produce high-quality cesium (Cs)/FA/MA triple cation perovskite films. Furthermore, the annealing parameters of Cs0.05FA0.16MA0.79PbI2.7Br0.3 are enhanced to allow for a low-temperature fabrication process when paired with the ASB method. This resulted in the formation of remarkable films with micrometer grains and few defects. Self-powered photodetectors were constructed using the improved conditions, resulting in devices that exhibited a low dark current, an on/off ratio of >103, and a rapid rise time of 12.4 μs. The conclusion of this work shows that ASB can be applied to triple cation perovskites and in using this method, the previously established optimal annealing temperature is lowered.

Unveiling the additive-assisted oriented growth of perovskite crystallite for high performance light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Solution-processed metal halide perovskites have been recognized as one of the most promising semiconductors, with applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells and lasers. Various additives have been widely used in perovskite precursor solutions, aiming to improve the formed perovskite film quality through passivating defects and controlling the crystallinity. The additive's role of defect passivation has been intensively investigated, while a deep understanding of how additives influence the crystallization process of perovskites is lacking. Here, we reveal a general additive-assisted crystal formation pathway for FAPbI3 perovskite with vertical orientation, by tracking the chemical interaction in the precursor solution and crystallographic evolution during the film formation process. The resulting understanding motivates us to use a new additive with multi-functional groups, 2-(2-(2-Aminoethoxy)ethoxy)acetic acid, which can facilitate the orientated growth of perovskite and passivate defects, leading to perovskite layer with high crystallinity and low defect density and thereby record-high performance NIR perovskite LEDs (~800 nm emission peak, a peak external quantum efficiency of 22.2% with enhanced stability).
