A new species of Suwallia Ricker, 1943 (Plecoptera, Chloroperlidae) from southwestern China, with an updated key to male Suwallia species.

ABSTRACT: A new species of the genus Suwallia Ricker, 1943 (Plecoptera, Chloroperlidae), Suwalliadengba sp. nov., is described from Tibet and Yunnan, southwestern China. A diagnosis and description of the adult habitus and aedeagal structure are illustrated with color images. Similarities in the terminalia with closely related species are discussed. In addition, an updated key to adult males of the Suwallia species of China is provided.

This is the first report of the family Chloroperlidae from Guizhou Province. Diagnosis, description of male, female and nymph, illustration of terminalia and similarities with closely-related species are provided and discussed.

It belongs to the family Chloroperlidae. This genus includes more than 55 species world wide, 14 of which have been reported from China.New informationA new species of the genus Sweltsa Ricker, 1943, Sweltsaliupanshana Rehman, Du & Huo sp. nov. from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Liupan Mountain, China is described; this is the second record of Sweltsa from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In addition, the first female description and male supplementary description of Sweltsahamula Chen & Du, 2017 from Sichuan Province are provided. Diagnosis, description and colour illustration of the new species and of Sweltsahamula are provided and the morphological characteristics are compared with closely-related species.

A new species of Haploperla from China (Plecoptera, Chloroperlidae).

Project description:A new species of the genus Haploperla, Haploperla triangulatasp. n., is described and illustrated from specimens collected in Qinghai province, China. Haploperla triangulata is characterized by the epiproct mostly sclerotized and hairless, sub-triangular in dorsal view and blunt at tip; and by the aedeagus with two median elliptical lobes ventrally. The new species is compared with its most similar congeners, and diagnostic characters are presented.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a stonefly species, Suwallia bimaculata (Plecoptera: Chloroperlidae).

Project description:The stonefly Suwallia bimaculata belongs to the Chloroperlidae. The mitogenome of S. bimaculata was sequenced and annotated, the new representative of the complete mitogenome of the genus Suwallia. The entire genome of S. bimaculata is 16,125 bp totally with an A + T content of 68.5%, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and a 1,210 bp control region. All genes have the similar locations and strands with that of other published species of Plecoptera. Most PCGs use typical start/stop codon, whereas ND5 use GTG as start codon. And, COII and ND5 stopped with incomplete terminaton signal T. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using the Bayesian (BI) method and Maximum-likelihood (ML) methods based on 13 protein-coding genes and two ribosomal RNAs showed that S. bimaculata was the sister group to Suwallia teleckojensis and the clade Suwallia was closely to four perlodid species. More chloroperlid data was needed for further study of phylogeny in Chloroperlidae.

Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Suwallia teleckojensis (Plecoptera: Chloroperlidae) and Implications for the Higher Phylogeny of Stoneflies.

Project description:Stoneflies comprise an ancient group of insects, but the phylogenetic position of Plecoptera and phylogenetic relations within Plecoptera have long been controversial, and more molecular data is required to reconstruct precise phylogeny. Herein, we present the complete mitogenome of a stonefly, Suwallia teleckojensis, which is 16146 bp in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and a control region (CR). Most PCGs initiate with the standard start codon ATN. However, ND5 and ND1 started with GTG and TTG. Typical termination codons TAA and TAG were found in eleven PCGs, and the remaining two PCGs (COII and ND5) have incomplete termination codons. All transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) have the classic cloverleaf secondary structures, with the exception of tRNASer(AGN), which lacks the dihydrouridine (DHU) arm. Secondary structures of the two ribosomal RNAs were shown referring to previous models. A large tandem repeat region, two potential stem-loop (SL) structures, Poly N structure (2 poly-A, 1 poly-T and 1 poly-C), and four conserved sequence blocks (CSBs) were detected in the control region. Finally, both maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses suggested that the Capniidae was monophyletic, and the other five stonefly families form a monophyletic group. In this study, S. teleckojensis was closely related to Sweltsa longistyla, and Chloroperlidae and Perlidae were herein supported to be a sister group.

A review of the Nearctic genus Zealeuctra Ricker (Plecoptera, Leuctridae), with the description of a new species from the Cumberland Plateau region of eastern North America.

Project description:The stonefly genus Zealeuctra (Plecoptera: Leuctridae) is endemic to the central and eastern Nearctic regions and is presently comprised of 10 species. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine and redescribe two important diagnostic features typically used to identify and define the adult male stage: the large, anteriorly-recurved epiproct and the medial cleft of the ninth abdominal tergite. SEM was also employed to depict the posteromedial portion of female 7(th) sternum. A new species, Z. ukayodi sp. n., is described from the Cumberland Plateau region of northeastern Alabama and Tennessee. The new species appears superficially similar to Z. talladega Grubbs, but is easily differentiated by characteristics of the male medial cleft. An updated taxonomic key to the males of Zealeuctra is provided.
