One Year in the Extreme Isolation of Antarctica-Is This Enough to Modulate an "Allergic" Sensitization?

ABSTRACT: (1) Background: After spending a year wintering in Antarctica, individual expedition members have reported increased or even new allergic reactions to environmental allergens after their return. (2) Methods: Blood samples from five overwintering crews were analyzed using the chip based multiplex ALEX Allergy Explorer (MacroArray Diagnostics GmbH, Austria). (3) Results: About one third of the 39 participants displayed specific IgEs against pollen. In most individuals, kinetics showed a reduction in the specific IgE at the time about nine months after deployment to Antarctica. Five participants had the highest specific IgE levels after returning to the "normal" world. The examination of the specific IgE relative to house dust mites and storage mites showed different kinetics. Six out of 10 had the highest specific IgE concentrations at the inner Antarctic measurement time point. These data corresponded well to the general situation in the stations. At the stations themselves, there were almost no pollen particle load, especially at Concordia. (4) Conclusions: Antarctic long-term confinement can induce an altered immune function, which is in some individuals pronounced after return to the familiar allergen environment. Future prospective studies in larger cohorts are needed to further specify these first results.

Project description:ObjectivesThe prevalence of allergic sensitization and diseases varies over time due to changes in climate, environment, and lifestyle. This study analyzed changes in sensitization to house dust mites (HDM) and dogs, as well as the prevalence of allergic diseases in the Korean general population over a 9-year period and identified contributing factors.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2010 and 2019. Participants were aged ≥10 years, with the analysis stratified by adolescents (10-18 years) and adults (≥19 years). We evaluated the prevalence of allergic sensitization and diseases and examined links to clinicodemographic factors across the two survey years. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association between sensitization and clinicopathological factors.ResultsIn total, 4,084 participants (2010: n=2,019, 2019: n=2,065) were enrolled. In 2010, HDM sensitization was 36.9%, declining to 36.6% in 2019. Dog sensitization decreased from 6.1% in 2010 to 5.8% in 2019. There were no significant differences between the two years among total participants; however, dog sensitization increased significantly among adolescents (2010: 8.7% vs. 2019: 15.3%; P=0.027). In 2010, HDM sensitization was negatively associated with urban residence (odds ratio [OR], 0.76; 95% CI, 0.60-0.96) and apartment dwelling (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.64-0.95) but was without significance in 2019. In adolescents, dog sensitization was strongly correlated with urban residence (OR, 8.06; 95% CI, 1.53-42.49) in 2010, whereas HDM sensitization was associated with obesity (OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.04-3.91) in 2019. In adults, heavy drinking was linked to dog sensitization (OR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.20-4.62) in 2010 and HDM sensitization in 2019 (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.03-2.02).ConclusionThe prevalence of HDM sensitization remained stable over 9 years, while dog sensitization increased in adolescents. The factors associated with sensitization differed between age groups and years. Understanding these trends and related factors in the general population can help healthcare providers develop new strategies to reduce allergic sensitization and diseases.

Project description:BackgroundThe increase in allergic diseases in children has coincided with the westernization of lifestyles. Although clustering of modifiable lifestyles has been frequently reported in children, there is limited research on how lifestyle factors collectively contribute to allergic conditions. Our aim was to identify lifestyle clusters among Finnish school-aged children and explore their associations with the prevalence of allergic disease symptoms and sensitization.MethodsWe used cross-sectional data from the international ISCOLE survey and its Finnish ancillary allergy study conducted in 2012-2013. We studied 148-461 children aged 9-11 years living in the metropolitan area of Finland. Parents completed a questionnaire on their child's allergic disease symptoms, and specific IgE responses from blood samples were analyzed to determine allergic sensitization. Lifestyle factors considered in clustering were moderate-to-vigorous-physical activity (MVPA) and nighttime sleep recorded by accelerometers, screen time inquired via a questionnaire, and healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns from food frequency questionnaire data. Lifestyle clusters were identified using K-means cluster analysis, and their associations with allergic disease symptoms and sensitization were explored using logistic regression models.ResultsTwo distinct and stable clusters were identified: 'healthier lifestyle & lower MVPA' and 'unhealthier lifestyle & higher MVPA'. After adjustments, children in the 'unhealthier lifestyle & higher MVPA' cluster did not show significantly different odds for symptoms of asthma (OR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.46-1.37), allergic rhinitis (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 0.77-2.24), or eczema (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.43-1.77) as compared to those in the 'healthier lifestyle & lower MVPA' cluster. Similar results were observed for sensitization to ≥ 1 inhaled allergen (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 0.53-3.10) and sensitization to ≥ 1 food allergen (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.30-2.60).ConclusionsThe results suggest that modifiable lifestyle factors may not play a significant role in allergic conditions within the examined age group. Lifestyle behaviors established in earlier childhood may serve as more credible predictors of allergic outcomes.
