ABSTRACT: The study of the recent colonization of a symbiont and its interaction with host communities in new locations is an opportunity to understand how they interact. The use of isotopic ratios in trophic ecology can provide measurements of a species' isotopic niche, as well as knowledge about how the isotopic niches between symbiont and host species overlap. Stable isotope measurements were used to assess the sources of carbon assimilated by the host species (the bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis and Scrobicularia plana) and their associated symbiont pea crab Afropinnotheres monodi, which occurs within these bivalves' mantle cavities. The mixing model estimates suggest that all of them assimilate carbon from similar sources, particularly from pseudofaeces and particulate organic matter in this symbiotic system based on filter feeding. The symbiotic species occupy comparable trophic levels and its association seems to be commensal or parasitic depending on the duration of such association. The pea crab A. monodi reflects a sex-specific diet, where males are more generalist than the soft females because the latter's habitat is restricted to the host bivalve. The high isotopic overlap between soft females and M. galloprovincialis may reflect a good commensal relationship with the host.

Project description:Juvenile black sea bass Centropristis striata populations are increasing in southern New England estuaries of the northeastern United States with possible trophodynamic effects on native labrid species: tautog Tautoga onitis and cunner Tautogolabrus adspersus. In this study, we examined the abundance, size-structure, and feeding ecology of juvenile sea bass and labrids in Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island, USA) from June to October in 2018 and 2019, and evaluated potential interspecific competition using habitat, diet, and isotopic niche overlap indices. Juveniles (age-0+) of each fish species spatiotemporally co-occurred in shallow, polyhaline habitats throughout the estuary. Age-0 cohorts were numerically dominant across species and initially recruited to the study area in July (minimum total length, TL = 15-20 mm), reached peak abundances in mid- to late summer (maximum abundances = 12-140 fish 100 m-2), and emigrated from field sites in October (maximum TL = 85-96 mm). Stomach content and stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) analyses determined that focal fishes were generalist carnivores that foraged in bentho-pelagic food webs. Focal fishes also overlapped in their respective ambit and core isotopic niche space, but interspecific dietary overlap was size-dependent. Dietary overlap was most pronounced between sea bass ≤ 49 mm TL and labrids ≤ 59 mm TL due to their mutual reliance on gammarid and caprellid amphipods. Ontogenetic dietary shifts then resulted in food niche segregation, such that sea bass 50-139 mm TL consumed decapod crustaceans and fish, whereas labrids 60-181 mm TL mainly fed on amphipods, worms, bivalves, and turf-associated biota, i.e. bryozoans, hydroids, and seaweeds. Habitat and trophic niche overlap between early juvenile sea bass and labrids have not caused opposite population trajectories or food resource limitation in Narragansett Bay, indicating an absence of exploitative competition. Alternatively, realized competition in focal fishes may be too spatiotemporally restricted to alter their population dynamics. Continuous monitoring of the sea bass's bio-ecological effects in southern New England estuaries is warranted, however, given their recent range expansion and increasing abundances at northern latitudes.

Project description:Numerous studies of insight problem solving are focused on both the control and storage systems of working memory. We obtained contradictory data about how working memory systems are involved in insight problem solving process. We argue that measuring the dynamics of the control system and storage systems through the course of problem solving can provide a more refined view on the processes involved, as a whole, and explain the existing controversies. We theorize that specific insight mechanisms require varying working memory capacities at different stages of the problem solving process. Our study employed a dual task paradigm to track the dynamics of working memory systems load during problem solving by measuring the reaction time in a secondary probe-task during different stages of problem solving. We varied the modality (verbal, visual) and the complexity of the probe-task during insight and non-insight problem solving. The results indicated that the dynamics of working memory load in insight problems differs from those in non-insight problems. Our first experiment shows that the complexity of the probe-task affects overall probe-task reaction times in both insight and non-insight problem solving. Our second experiment demonstrates that the solution of a non-insight problem is primarily associated with the working memory control system, while insight problems rely on relevant storage systems. Our results confirm that insight process requires access to various systems of working memory throughout the solution. We found that working memory load in non-insight problems increases from stage to stage due to allocation of the attentional control resources to interim calculations. The nature of the dynamics of working memory load in insight problems remains debatable. We claim that insight problem solving demands working memory storage during the entire problem solving process and that control system plays an important role just prior to the solution.
