Highly efficient modulation doping: A path toward superior organic thermoelectric devices.

ABSTRACT: We investigate the charge and thermoelectric transport in modulation-doped large-area rubrene thin-film crystals with different crystal phases. We show that modulation doping allows achieving superior doping efficiencies even for high doping densities, when conventional bulk doping runs into the reserve regime. Modulation-doped orthorhombic rubrene achieves much improved thermoelectric power factors, exceeding 20 μW m^-1 K^-2 at 80°C. Theoretical studies give insight into the energy landscape of the heterostructures and its influence on qualitative trends of the Seebeck coefficient. Our results show that modulation doping together with high-mobility crystalline organic semiconductor films is a previosly unexplored strategy for achieving high-performance organic thermoelectrics.

Superior upconversion fluorescence dopants for highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescent devices.

Project description:In this study, we revealed a new approach for the development of new triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) materials with highly efficient deep-blue fluorescence via the incorporation of a styrylpyrene core and an electron-donating group. The resulting deep-blue emitters (PCzSP, DFASP, and DPASP) exhibit intramolecular charge transfer emissions with remarkably high emission quantum yields. The electroluminescent devices based on these three fluorophores as dopants using CBP as a host exhibit very high device efficiencies; in particular, the DPASP-doped device reveals an extremely high EQE of 12%, reaching the limit of a TTA-based device. The EL characteristics of DPASP-doped CBP-based devices at various doping concentrations (0-5%) suggest that the dopant DPASP is responsible for the TTA-type delayed fluorescence in the device; no delayed fluorescence was observed for the device using CBP as the host emitter. Moreover, when using DMPPP with ambipolar characteristics as the host, the deep-blue DPASP-doped device also gives outstanding performance with an EQE of nearly 11% with an extremely small efficiency roll-off, which was ascribed to the excellent charge balance in the emitting layer of the EL device. The TTA process of the SP-based dopants accounts significantly for the superior efficiencies of the EL devices.

Highly efficient organic long persistent luminescence based on host-guest doping systems.

Project description:Recently, organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL) has attracted widespread attention as a new luminescence pathway initiated by the exciplex. However, the low quantum yield, few alternative molecules and high fabrication cost seriously slow down the development of OLPL materials. Herein, a series of simple multi-guest/host OLPL materials with a high quantum yield are reported by doping four phenothiazine derivative guest molecules into 9H-xanthen-9-one host matrices. The F-substituted phenothiazine derivative doping system displays highly efficient emission with 46.3% quantum yield in air. Meanwhile, these OLPL materials provide broad opportunities for further application in the field of heat resistance due to their highly efficient luminescence at high temperatures.

Highly efficient organic photovoltaics with enhanced stability through the formation of doping-induced stable interfaces.

Project description:Flexible organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are promising power sources for wearable electronics. However, it is challenging to simultaneously achieve high efficiency as well as good stability under various stresses. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of highly efficient (efficiency, 13.2%) and stable OPVs based on nonfullerene blends by a single-step postannealing treatment. The device performance decreases dramatically after annealing at 90 °C and is fully recovered after annealing at 150 °C. Glass-encapsulated annealed OPVs show good environmental stability with 4.8% loss in efficiency after 4,736 h and an estimated T 80 lifetime (80% of the initial power conversion efficiency) of over 20,750 h in the dark under ambient condition and T 80 lifetime of 1,050 h at 85 °C and 30% relative humidity. This environmental stability is enabled by the synergetic effect of the stable morphology of donor/acceptor blends and thermally stabilized interfaces due to doping. Furthermore, the high efficiency and good stability are almost 100% retained in ultraflexible OPVs and minimodules which are mechanically robust and have long-term operation capability and thus are promising for future self-powered and wearable electronics.

A general design approach toward covalent organic frameworks for highly efficient electrochemiluminescence.

Project description:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) plays a key role in analysis and sensing because of its high sensitivity and low background. Its wide applications are however limited by a lack of highly tunable ECL luminophores. Here we develop a scalable method to design ECL emitters of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in aqueous medium by simultaneously restricting the donor and acceptor to the COFs' tight electron configurations and constructing high-speed charge transport networks through olefin linkages. This design allows efficient intramolecular charge transfer for strong ECL, and no exogenous poisonous co-reactants are needed. Olefin-linked donor-acceptor conjugated COFs, systematically synthesized by combining non-ECL active monomers with C2v or C3v symmetry, exhibit strong ECL signals, which can be boosted by increasing the chain length and conjugation of monomers. The present concept demonstrates that the highly efficient COF-based ECL luminophores can be precisely designed, providing a promising direction toward COF-based ECL phosphors.

Development of Alkylthiazole-Based Novel Thermoelectric Conjugated Polymers for Facile Organic Doping.

Project description:In this study, we developed two novel conjugated polymers that can easily be doped with F4TCNQ organic dopants using a sequential doping method and then studied their organic thermoelectric (OTE) properties. In particular, to promote the intermolecular ordering of OTE polymers in the presence of the F4TCNQ dopant, alkylthiazole-based conjugated building blocks with highly planar backbone structures were synthesized and copolymerized. All polymers showed strong molecular ordering and edge-on orientation in the film state, even in the presence of the F4TCNQ organic dopant. Thus, the sequential doping process barely changed the molecular ordering of the polymer films while making efficient molecular doping. In addition, the doping efficiency was improved in the more π-extended polymer backbones with thienothiophene units due to the emptier space in the polymer lamellar structure to locate ionized F4TCNQ. Moreover, the study of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) revealed that higher hole mobility in OTFTs was the key to increasing the electrical conductivity of OTE devices fabricated using the sequential doping method.

Salt doping to improve thermoelectric power factor of organic nanocomposite thin films.

Project description:Thermoelectric materials with a large Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical conductivity (σ) are required to efficiently convert waste heat into electricity, but their interdependence makes simultaneously improving these variables immensely challenging. To address this problem, bilayers (BL) of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT), stabilized by KBr-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were deposited using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. Doping PEDOT:PSS with KBr, prior to DWNT dispersion and LbL assembly, results in a six-fold improvement in electrical conductivity with little change in the Seebeck coefficient. A maximum power factor (PF = S 2 σ) of 626 ± 39 μW m-1 K-2 is obtained from a 20 BL PDDA/PEDOT:PSS-DWNT film (∼46 nm thick), where PEDOT:PSS was doped with 3 mmol KBr. This large PF is due to the formation of a denser film containing a greater proportion of DWNT, which was influenced by the charge-screening effects imparted by the salt dopant that separates PSS from PEDOT. This study demonstrates a relatively simple strategy to significantly increase the thermoelectric performance of fully organic nanocomposites that are useful for low temperature thermoelectric devices.

Aromatic hydrocarbon macrocycles for highly efficient organic light-emitting devices with single-layer architectures.

Project description:A modern electrophosphorescent organic light-emitting device (OLED) achieves quantitative electro-optical conversion by using multiple layers of molecular materials designed through role allotment for independent and specific functions. A unique, potentially innovative device architecture, i.e., a single-layer phosphorescent OLED, is currently being developed by designing multirole base materials via a structural combination of multiple functional components in single molecules. The multirole molecules, however, inevitably require multiple processes to synthesize their multiple components and, moreover, to assemble these components synthetically into one molecule. We herein show that the multirole base material for a highly efficient single-layer phosphorescent OLED can be designed and synthesized with a single, very simple aromatic hydrocarbon component of toluene merely through a one-pot macrocyclization. Without requiring the assembly tasks at the synthesis stage, the molecular design allows for a concise one-pot synthesis of, and a quantitative electro-optical conversion in, the single-layer device architecture with a single-component base material.

Interfacial engineering of graphene for highly efficient blue and white organic light-emitting devices.

Project description:Graphene as anodes of flexible organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) has intrinsic drawbacks of a low work function and a high sheet resistance although it can eliminate the brittle feature of ITO. Chemical doping as a conventional approach is universally used to decrease the sheet resistance and adjust the work function of graphene electrodes, but it suffers from instability problems due to the volatility of chemical species. Here, an insulated poly(4-styrenesulphonate) (PSS) modification layer is firstly coated on the graphene surface along with improved air-stability and hole-injection ability via interfacial dipoles. Besides, the utilization of PSS is beneficial to reduce the leakage current of OLEDs. Then a gradient injection layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):PSS (PEDOT:PSS)/tetrafluoroethyleneperfluoro-3,6-dioxa-4-methyl-7-octenesulphonic acid copolymer-doped PEDOT:PSS is covered onto the PSS-modified graphene to further promote hole injection and improve carrier balance inside OLEDs. With above interfacial modification technique, very high efficiencies of 201.9 cd A-1 (76.1 lm W-1, 45.2%) and 326.5 cd A-1 (128.2 lm W-1, 99.5%) for blue and white emissions are obtained, which are comparable to the most efficient display and lighting technologies so far.

Viologen-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks toward Metal-Free Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise in the field of photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. Many studies have been carried out using various electroactive and photoactive moieties such as triazine, imide, and porphyrin to produce COFs with different geometric structures and units. Electron transfer mediators like viologen and their derivatives can accelerate the transfer of electrons from photosensitizers to active sites. Herein, the combination of a biphenyl-bridged dicarbazole electroactive donor skeleton with a viologen acceptor structure is reported for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of novel COF structures with various alkyl linkers {TPCBP X-COF [X = ethyl (E), butyl (B), and hexyl (H)]}. The structures became more flexible and exhibited less crystal behavior as the length of the alkyl chain increased according to scanning and transmission electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction analyses, and theoretical three-dimensional geometric optimization. In comparison, the H2 evolution rate of the TPCBP B-COF (12.276 mmol g-1) is 2.15 and 2.38 times higher than those of the TPCBP H-COF (5.697 mmol h-1) and TPCBP E-COF (5.165 mmol h-1), respectively, under visible light illumination for 8 h. The TPCBP B-COF structure is one of the best-performing catalysts for the corresponding photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the literature, producing 1.029 mmol g-1 h-1 with a high apparent quantum efficiency of 79.69% at 470 nm. Our strategy provides new aspects for the design of novel COFs with respect to future metal-free hydrogen evolution by using solar energy conversion.

An Organic Borate Salt with Superior p-Doping Capability for Organic Semiconductors.

Project description:Molecular doping allows enhancement and precise control of electrical properties of organic semiconductors, and is thus of central technological relevance for organic (opto-) electronics. Beyond single-component molecular electron acceptors and donors, organic salts have recently emerged as a promising class of dopants. However, the pertinent fundamental understanding of doping mechanisms and doping capabilities is limited. Here, the unique capabilities of the salt consisting of a borinium cation (Mes2B+; Mes: mesitylene) and the tetrakis(penta-fluorophenyl)borate anion [B(C6F5)4]- is demonstrated as p-type dopant for polymer semiconductors. With a range of experimental methods, the doping mechanism is identified to comprise electron transfer from the polymer to Mes2B+, and the positive charge on the polymer is stabilized by [B(C6F5)4]-. Notably, the former salt cation leaves during processing and is not present in films. The anion [B(C6F5)4]- even enables the stabilization of polarons and bipolarons in poly(3-hexylthiophene), not yet achieved with other molecular dopants. From doping studies with high ionization energy polymer semiconductors, the effective electron affinity of Mes2B+[B(C6F5)4]- is estimated to be an impressive 5.9 eV. This significantly extends the parameter space for doping of polymer semiconductors.
