Aluminum alloy compositions and properties extracted from a corpus of scientific manuscripts and US patents.

ABSTRACT: Researchers continue to explore and develop aluminum alloys with new compositions and improved performance characteristics. An understanding of the current design space can help accelerate the discovery of new alloys. We present two datasets: 1) chemical composition, and 2) mechanical properties for predominantly wrought aluminum alloys. The first dataset contains 14,884 entries on aluminum alloy compositions extracted from academic literature and US patents using text processing techniques, including 550 wrought aluminum alloys which are already registered with the Aluminum Association. The second dataset contains 1,278 entries on mechanical properties for aluminum alloys, where each entry is associated with a particular wrought series designation, extracted from tables in academic literature.

A corpus of CO<sub>2</sub> electrocatalytic reduction process extracted from the scientific literature.

Project description:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction process has gained enormous attention for both environmental protection and chemicals production. Thereinto, the design of new electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity can draw inspiration from the abundant scientific literature. An annotated and verified corpus made from massive literature can assist the development of natural language processing (NLP) models, which can offer insight to help guide the understanding of these underlying mechanisms. To facilitate data mining in this direction, we present a benchmark corpus of 6,086 records manually extracted from 835 electrocatalytic publications, along with an extended corpus with 145,179 records in this article. In this corpus, nine types of knowledge such as material, regulation method, product, faradaic efficiency, cell setup, electrolyte, synthesis method, current density, and voltage are provided by either annotating or extracting. Machine learning algorithms can be applied to the corpus to help scientists find new and effective electrocatalysts. Furthermore, researchers familiar with NLP can use this corpus to design domain-specific named entity recognition (NER) models.

Anticorrosion Properties of a Novel Hybrid Sol-Gel Coating on Aluminum 3003 Alloy.

Project description:In this study, a novel hybrid sol-gel coating on AA3003 substrate was developed and the effects of various waste material additives on the reinforcement of the sol-gel coating and the anticorrosion properties in the saline medium were investigated. Egg shell, crumb rubber, activated carbon obtained for pyrolysis of waste rubber tire, waste rubber tire, cement kiln dust, and ST100 additives were tested as reinforcement materials. The AFM characterization results of the coating formulations on AA3003 alloy revealed enhanced roughness values for the modified coatings as compared to the base coating. Similarly, no significant changes were detected in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) absorption peaks of the hybrid polymeric material upon loading it with the waste additives, while slight changes in the hydrophobic properties of the final modified coatings were observed as a result of the modification process. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the hybrid sol-gel coating had a promising potential for the protection of the AA3003 substrate against corrosion in the saline medium. However, the loaded additives negatively affected the corrosion resistance properties of the parent hybrid sol-gel coating. For instance, the egg shell additive had the least negative effect on the barrier properties, whereas the cured coating layer of the sample loaded with cement and clay additives showed some disintegration, inhomogeneity, and low barrier properties on the metal surface.

Fatigue Strength Estimation Based on Local Mechanical Properties for Aluminum Alloy FSW Joints.

Project description:Overall fatigue strengths and hardness distributions of the aluminum alloy similar and dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) joints were determined. The local fatigue strengths as well as local tensile strengths were also obtained by using small round bar specimens extracted from specific locations, such as the stir zone, heat affected zone, and base metal. It was found from the results that fatigue fracture of the FSW joint plate specimen occurred at the location of the lowest local fatigue strength as well as the lowest hardness, regardless of microstructural evolution. To estimate the fatigue strengths of aluminum alloy FSW joints from the hardness measurements, the relationship between fatigue strength and hardness for aluminum alloys was investigated based on the present experimental results and the available wide range of data from the references. It was found as: σa (R = -1) = 1.68 HV (σa is in MPa and HV has no unit). It was also confirmed that the estimated fatigue strengths were in good agreement with the experimental results for aluminum alloy FSW joints.

ECO-CollecTF: A Corpus of Annotated Evidence-Based Assertions in Biomedical Manuscripts.

Project description:Analysis of high-throughput experiments in the life sciences frequently relies upon standardized information about genes, gene products, and other biological entities. To provide this information, expert curators are increasingly relying on text mining tools to identify, extract and harmonize statements from biomedical journal articles that discuss findings of interest. For determining reliability of the statements, curators need the evidence used by the authors to support their assertions. It is important to annotate the evidence directly used by authors to qualify their findings rather than simply annotating mentions of experimental methods without the context of what findings they support. Text mining tools require tuning and adaptation to achieve accurate performance. Many annotated corpora exist to enable developing and tuning text mining tools; however, none currently provides annotations of evidence based on the extensive and widely used Evidence and Conclusion Ontology. We present the ECO-CollecTF corpus, a novel, freely available, biomedical corpus of 84 documents that captures high-quality, evidence-based statements annotated with the Evidence and Conclusion Ontology.

The Acceptable Text Similarity Level in Manuscripts Submitted to Scientific Journals.

Project description:Plagiarism is among commonly identified scientific misconducts in submitted manuscripts. Some journals routinely check the level of text similarity in the submitted manuscripts at the time of submission and reject the submission on the fly if the text similarity score exceeds a set cut-off value (e.g., 20%). Herein, I present a manuscript with 32% text similarity, yet without any instances of text plagiarism. This underlines the fact that text similarity is not necessarily tantamount to text plagiarism. Every instance of text similarity should be examined with scrutiny by a trained person in the editorial office. A high text similarity score does not always imply plagiarism; a low score, on the other hand, does not guarantee absence of plagiarism. There is no cut-off for text similarity to imply text plagiarism.

Effects of Ce-Rich Mischmetal on Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of 5182 Aluminum Alloy.

Project description:This paper addresses the effects of Ce-rich mischmetal on the microstructure evolution of a 5182 aluminum alloy during annealing and rolling processes. The Ce-rich mischmetal was added to an as-cast 5182 aluminum alloy in an induction furnace, and this was followed by homogenized annealing at 450 °C for 24 h and a rolling operation. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties' analysis of the 5182 Al alloy were characterized. The results show that the Ce-rich mischmetal could modify the microstructure, refine the α-Al grains, break the network distribution of Mg2Si phases, and prevent Cr and Si atoms from diffusing into the Al6(Mn, Fe) phase in the as-cast 5182 Al alloys. Ce-rich mischmetal elements were also found to refine the Al6(Mn, Fe) phase after cold rolling. Then, the refined Al6(Mn, Fe) particles inhibited the growth of recrystallization grains to refine them from 10.01 to 7.18 μm after cold rolling. Consequently, the tensile strength of the cold-rolled 5182 Al alloy increased from 414.65 to 454.34 MPa through cell-size strengthening, dislocation density strengthening, and particle strengthening. The tensile strength of the recrystallization annealed 5182 Al alloy was increased from 322.16 to 342.73 MPa through grain refinement strengthening, and this alloy was more stable after the recrystallization annealing temperature.

Aluminum-copper alloy anode materials for high-energy aqueous aluminum batteries.

Project description:Aqueous aluminum batteries are promising post-lithium battery technologies for large-scale energy storage applications because of the raw materials abundance, low costs, safety and high theoretical capacity. However, their development is hindered by the unsatisfactory electrochemical behaviour of the Al metal electrode due to the presence of an oxide layer and hydrogen side reaction. To circumvent these issues, we report aluminum-copper alloy lamellar heterostructures as anode active materials. These alloys improve the Al-ion electrochemical reversibility (e.g., achieving dendrite-free Al deposition during stripping/plating cycles) by using periodic galvanic couplings of alternating anodic α-aluminum and cathodic intermetallic Al2Cu nanometric lamellas. In symmetric cell configuration with a low oxygen concentration (i.e., 0.13 mg L-1) aqueous electrolyte solution, the lamella-nanostructured eutectic Al82Cu18 alloy electrode allows Al stripping/plating for 2000 h with an overpotential lower than ±53 mV. When the Al82Cu18 anode is tested in combination with an AlxMnO2 cathode material, the aqueous full cell delivers specific energy of ~670 Wh kg-1 at 100 mA g-1 and an initial discharge capacity of ~400 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1 with a capacity retention of 83% after 400 cycles.

Effect of Non-Isothermal Aging on the Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance of 2A12 Aluminum Alloy.

Project description:The effect of linear non-isothermal aging and composite non-isothermal aging on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of 2A12 aluminum alloy was investigated. Optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to study the microstructure and intergranular corrosion morphology, and the precipitates were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the mechanical properties of 2A12 aluminum alloy were improved by both non-isothermal aging techniques due to the formation of an S' phase and a point S″ phase in the alloy matrix. Linear non-isothermal aging resulted in better mechanical properties than composite non-isothermal aging. However, the corrosion resistance of the 2A12 aluminum alloy was reduced after non-isothermal aging due to the transformation of matrix precipitates and grain boundary precipitates. The corrosion resistance of the samples followed the order: annealed state > linear non-isothermal aging > composite non-isothermal aging.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High-Strength AA6011 Aluminum Alloy Welding with Novel 4xxx Filler Metals.

Project description:Welding high-strength 6xxx aluminum alloys using a commercial ER4043 filler often results in inferior joint strength. This study investigated the effects of newly developed Al-Si-Mg filler metals with varying Mg (0.6-1.4 wt.%) and Mn (0.25-0.5 wt.%) contents on the microstructure evolution and mechanical performance of high-strength AA6011-T6 plates using gas metal arc welding. Two commercial fillers, ER4043 and ER4943, were used as references for comparison. The results revealed that increasing the Mg and Mn contents in the novel fillers resulted in sufficiently high alloying elements in the fusion zone (FZ), leading to higher microhardness. Under as-welded conditions, the weakest region of the joint was the heat-affected zone (HAZ). The joint strength was almost independent of the filler type and was controlled by the HAZ strength, measuring a UTS of 230 and 241 MPa for ER4043 and the other joints, respectively. The higher Mg contents in the novel fillers promoted the precipitation of a large volume fraction of fine β″-MgSi in the FZ during post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), resulting in superior strength and higher welding efficiency relative to the reference fillers. The optimal Mg content of the novel fillers was 0.6 wt.%. Increasing the Mn content of the filler metal had an insignificant effect. The FMg0.6 filler with 0.6% Mg achieved the best combination of strength (UTS of 410 MPa) and elongation (6.7%) as well as the highest welding efficiency (94%) after PWHT, among all of the fillers studied. However, the newly developed fillers adversely affected the impact toughness of the joints.
