Mercury biomonitoring in German adults using volumetric absorptive microsampling.

ABSTRACT: Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant and a danger to human health. Human biomonitoring of Hg using a dried blood matrix instead of venous blood sampling for exposure assessment is of growing interest. This study aims to develop, validate, and evaluate the application of volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) for Hg biomonitoring in humans. Sampling, drying, and storage conditions were evaluated during method development. Storage in pre-cleaned glass vials after drying for 2 h in a desiccator ensured analyte stability for at least 4 weeks. Sixty-eight paired capillary VAMS and venous blood samples from volunteers in Munich, Germany, were used for method validation. Hg levels in VAMS and venous blood samples were determined by direct mercury analysis. The limits of detection and quantitati
